Canada 150 rink to cost $2.5 million to operate through February
Taxpayers will spend an additional $2.5 million to extend the operation of the Canada 150 skating rink on Parliament Hill, Canadian Heritage confirmed Thursday.
The heritage department had originally planned to keep the rink open until New Year’s Eve, but Heritage Minister Mélanie Joly announced in November that it would be extended until the end of February.
The costs to keep open and maintain the rink between Dec. 7 to Dec. 31 totalled $5.6 million. The additional $2.5 m -
Editorial: Politicians in the era of sexual misconduct allegations
Near the end of the 2011 federal election campaign, news broke that then-NDP leader Jack Layton had been found naked by police in a massage parlour some years earlier, when he was a city councillor. The parlour in question, police believed, was also a bawdy house. Layton, shaken by the news report, said he had been there only because he had sore muscles and, well, needed a massage. He said he did not know other activities were suspected on the premises.

Community mourns slain teen Nick Hickey, hundreds attend funeral
Hundreds gathered at a Bells Corners Catholic church Thursday morning for the funeral of innocent teen Nick Hickey, who was run over and killed while out for a walk last week in a crime that has shaken the community.
Hickey’s grieving parents, brothers and sisters and the larger community gathered for what Father Brian Hennessey called an opportunity to pray for Nick, but also for those left behind to deal with his loss.
They were brought here because of “an act of evil,” Henne -
Egan: Until we see a shovel with Sens logo, these are only baby steps on LeBreton
It is the giant green light LeBreton Flats has been waiting for, we are told, but for all the flashing yellows in my head.
And so it was a surprisingly joyless act of city-building at NCC headquarters on Thursday morning, over in less than half an hour, with no cake or popping corks.
At the precise moment, there was so little applause in the NCC board room, it sounded like three people tapping snow off their Sorels. Eugene Melnyk, rarely lost for words, was there but said nothing.

Ifill and Gee: Canada's 'Time's Up!' reckoning is here
Oct. 5, 2017 will forever be the beginning of the end.
It’s when women decided “Time’s Up!” on dealing with sexual harassment and assault in the workplace. For months we have seen women across the United States from a wide range of industries (entertainment, politics, sports and hospitality) share their stories about workplace sexual harassment and assault.
We have heard so many stories about men behaving badly in the workplace that it’s really only surprising when -

Reevely: Reeling Tories must pick a new leader, and a campaign strategy too
After the shock resignation of leader Patrick Brown in the wee hours of Thursday, Ontario Progressive Conservatives legislators will meet Friday to pick a “parliamentary leader,” a job that has no definition in the party constitution.
It’s a sign of how bad a mess Brown leaves behind. He quit amid allegationsaired by CTV News Wednesday evening that he made improper advances on a high-schooler when he was a Barrie city councillor and assaulted a young woman who worked for him wh -

'Emergency' meeting tackles 'crisis' in Indigenous child welfare
Indigenous Services Minister Jane Philpott laid out a six-point plan to reform Canada’s child and welfare services for First Nations, Inuit and Métis families at an “emergency meeting” on the issue held in Ottawa Thursday.
Philpott promised that money for the reforms would be in the next federal budget, but did not say how much the government would spend to fix a problem she has labelled a “humanitarian crisis.”
And although Philpott promised the govern -
Denley: Brown's exit isn't the end of the Progressive Conservatives
The resignation of Patrick Brown as Ontario Progressive Conservative leader seems like a devastating blow to the party with just over four months until the provincial election, but if the PCs play it right, it could help them win that election.
Job one is to get a credible new leader in place as quickly as possible, and party sources said senior caucus leadership would meet Thursday to decide on an interim leader, then announce their choice by Friday morning.
The logical pick would be deputy lea -

The Gatineau Olympiques have been cleared to return to their home building for a game Friday after the building was closed by an ammonia spill earlier this week.
The spill occurred Tuesday, leading to a postponement of an Olympiques game and several other scheduled activities.
The Olympiques are playing the Drummondville Voltigeurs Friday, and the postponed game against the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada has been rescheduled for March 12.
While the Olympiques return to the building, affectionately -
