The city is receiving help in its quest to ticket owners of Quebec-plated vehicles whose drivers have been caught burning red lights at camera-monitored intersections.

Abuse of elderly man in Ottawa long-term care focus of Dr. Oz show
The abuse of an elderly Ottawa man in a city-run long-term care home last year will be featured on a widely syndicated American television talk show Thursday.
Daniel Nassrallah, an Ottawa lawyer whose elderly grandfather was repeatedly struck in the face by a support worker at Garry J. Armstrong long-term care home, said video of the assault will air during an episode of the Dr. Oz Show Thursday afternoon.
Nassrallah will be part of a group of guests talking about elder abuse on the show, which -
Donald Trump is a wily bully who does not rule alone, says author David Frum
Canadian-born political commentator David Frum was a staunch conservative and Republican when he wrote speeches for U.S. President George W. Bush. But he’s no fan of the White House’s current occupant.
Frum is discussing his new book, Trumpocracy: The Corruption of the American Republic, at Southminster United Church, presented by the Ottawa International Writers Festival Thursday night. The event is sold out, but Frum, the 57-year-old senior editor at The Atlantic, d -
LRT contractor needs more time to figure out when $2.1B system will be done
Rideau Transit Group needs more time to figure out when it can deliver the city’s $2.1-billion LRT system.
The construction consortium had until Wednesday to let the city know when the Confederation Line would be ready. In a mid-afternoon memo, city management told council that RTG wasn’t ready to name a date.
The finance and economic development committee will receive a progress update on Feb. 6. The city wants to give politicians some idea about when OC Transpo can start testing th -

Infectious diseases expert Dr. Virginia Roth is The Ottawa Hospital's new chief of staff
Dr. Virginia Roth, The Ottawa Hospital’s new chief of staff, is best known for her work on diseases with the scariest numbers and letters in the headlines — H1N1, SARS and MRSA, to name a few.
That’s H1N1, the influenza virus behind the 2009 pandemic. MRSA, the superbug resistant to many of the antibiotics used to treat ordinary infections. And scariest of all, SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome, which infected more than 250 people in Ontario in 2oo3 and caused thousand -
Regulations bar Stittsville pizzeria from donating food to Ottawa shelter
The Shepherds of Good Hope says “inadequate” handling in transporting hundreds of donated pizzas from a Stittsville Little Caesars has prompted it to change its policy on accepting donations of prepared food and it will no longer take “certain prepared food items until we are able to upgrade our current infrastructure.”
The transportation issues were the apparent cause behind the City of Ottawa’s pointing out to Shepherds that regulations state the food must be dist -
Expanded Bruyère geriatric day hospital helps seniors remain in their homes
When 88-year-old Mary LaCroix tripped over her walker, breaking her femur and hip last fall, she thought her independent life was over.
“I thought that was it.”
Today, LaCroix is beginning to walk again, with the help of staff at Bruyère’s John and Jennifer Ruddy Geriatric Day Hospital, and is on her way to resuming her busy, independent life.
Keeping people such as LaCroix autonomous and active in the community is the goal of the facility where an extensive renovation w -
Reevely: Ottawa's police board needs to take more of an interest in Ottawa's police
Whatever’s going on in the Ottawa Police Service’s liaison committee with the city’s queer communities, it’s taking up much deeper problems in the Ottawa police that the police board, not just informal volunteer advisers, ought to have their oars in.
The minutes of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) liaison committee, some of whose troubles I wrote about on Wednesday, record a police human-resources person visiting to consult on the force’s recruitmen -
Regional chief 'optimistic' on eve of emergency meeting on Indigenous child welfare
The head of Ontario’s First Nations likens the emergency meeting on Indigenous child and family services that begins Thursday in Ottawa to a pressure cooker that’s finally blown.
“We’ve never heard of a meeting of this magnitude take place between the federal government and the Indigenous community,” said Ontario Regional Chief Isadore Day.
“It will be almost like a pressure cooker that’s finally getting some relief. I think this meeting is about be -
Quebec police task force deployed to reinforce Gatineau region
Quebec police have deployed a mobile task force in the Gatineau region in response to increased criminal activity in the Ottawa area.
Sûreté du Québec director of communications Guy Lapointe said the number of shootings and homicides in the past month, along with the re-emergence of the Hells Angels in Carlsbad Springs motivated the deployment.
“Everybody’s aware of what’s going on across the bridge,” Lapointe said.

Glavin: Party time in Davos while the rest of the world burns
In this first month of the 12th year of democracy’s global retreat, against a backdrop of shuddering and implosion in the key institutions of the liberal world order, it isn’t easy to discern anything auspiciously encouraging, exactly, in the 48th annual gathering of the rich, the famous and the powerful at the World Economic Forum in the snowbound resort village of Davos, in Switzerland’s alpine canton of Graubünden, this week.

An 18-year-old man is in custody following an assault investigation that led to Kingston police shutting down a west end street Wednesday morning.
Police say the incident started at about 3:30 a.m. when the suspect returned to his parent’s home on Glen Cairn Terrace in the city’s west end.
The suspect had a dispute with the parents and assaulted a parent with a weapon, according to police, who would only say the weapon was not a firearm.
The parent suffered minor injuries.

Denley: Sparks Street should become Sparks Park
Let’s cut to the chase on the latest attempt to “revitalize” the Sparks Street pedestrian mall.
It’s never going to work if the city remains stuck on the idea that all that’s required are more shops and, God help us, government-organized entertainment programming.
This is the same failed approach that has been talked about for decades. Let’s look at it logically.
Centretown is a ghost town once the government shuts down for the day. Despite all the prattling a -

Antiques: Hearing Aid Worth a Listen
Q. This device belonged to my grandmother, born in Yorkshire during the latter part of the 19th century. She became deaf as a child after suffering from scarlet fever.
My father was a medical doctor and actually used this ‘ear trumpet’ for some of his patients who were hard of hearing! It’s a very straightforward instrument –the speaker talks into one end while the listener positions the narrow end into their ear.
On it is printed ‘Mr. A.D. Bateman’s Tube Reg. -
Suspect wanted in Gatineau credit card fraud
If you know this man, Gatineau police would like to hear from you because he’s wanted in a fraud investigation.
The suspect impersonated a second man, and contacted that man’s bank, asking to make changes to the customer’s personal information on file.
Once that information was changed, the suspect applied for a new credit card under a false name, and had it mailed to his own address.
Security cameras recorded the suspect at institutions in Casselman and Ottawa where he is beli -

Adeel: Water – Canada's new peacekeeping opportunity
Canada has a reputation as a peacekeeping nation and as a water country, one of the most richly endowed in the world.
These two elements are connected and put our nation in a strong position to offer leadership to avoid future global conflicts. If we are going to claim that “Canada is back,” we must draw upon our strengths and make a concerted effort to support the international community.
Canadian leadership in peacekeeping dates back to the Sinai Crisis in 1956. It was Lester B. Pe -
Blind pianist opens music school for the disabled
Mubarak Farah was eight years old when he began teaching himself to play the piano. A refugee who came to Ottawa with his family when he was three, Farah listened to the Somali folk music played from his family’s cassettes, matching the notes on his keys and eventually figuring out the chords being played.
An impressive accomplishment for a child to do on his own, but Farah had something else setting him back: he was born with glaucoma and had lost all his vision by the time he was six. Un -
