Forbes: Here's why we can't buy our warships from foreign companies
It is so simple, according to some: Just go out to your foreign new warship dealer and buy the warship of your dreams for billions less than you can build it is Canada. Take the savings and pay ex-shipyard workers Employment Insurance for 10 years.
This would, of course, close every shipyard capable of building large ships in Canada – all three of them. Why did nobody think of it before?
Well, they have, and for decades the idea has been rejected by every type of government. Because -

Gatineau police nab accused coke smuggler wanted since 1999
When Gatineau police officers got a routine call to check out a suspicious person Monday night they ended up with an unexpected collar – a man who’s been in the lam for nearly two decades in connection with a massive money-laundering scheme that included the shipment of hundreds of kilograms of cocaine for organized crime.
Officers were called by an alert citizen to an area near the intersection of Saint-Raymond and Cité-des-Jeunes boulevards.
They spotted a man who matched th -

Put more cameras in care homes
Re: Letter, Regulate personal support workers, Jan. 20.

City planning committee approves new Rochester Field deal with NCC
City council’s planning committee on Tuesday accepted a controversial new deal Ottawa bureaucrats have struck with the National Capital Commission over future development in Rochester Field.
Several residents who live near the Westboro greenspace told the committee that the city shouldn’t allow development along the edge of Richmond Road, blocking the view across the field. They called for more consultation.
Gary Luddington, the chair of the Westboro Community Association, said -
Photos: Goodbye Sea Kings
The RCAF sent these photos to Defence Watch from the Friday flypast in Halifax to mark the end of Sea King operations at Shearwater. Sea Kings will still be on board RCN ships but they will be from the west coast squadron, the Department of National Defence says. Here is the photo caption to go along with these pics:

Cohen: Trump, Trudeau both personify ageist views
Say what you will about Donald Trump, he’s giving old age new life. Seniors everywhere should rejoice.
Trump will be 72 in June. He is the oldest elected president in the history of the United States. (By contrast, Ronald Reagan was a stripling of 69 when he took office in 1981.)
Trump, in fact, represents the opposite of a youth movement; in a manner of speaking, his presidency is a senior moment. But age is not his claim alone. In 2018, age defines America’s political class, and do -
Charlebois: The Tim Hortons brand is in trouble
Destroying Canadian icons seems to be a trend. In 2017, it was Sears.
Now, as minimum wage policies are slowly shifting countrywide, and not just in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia, Tim Hortons, or perhaps Restaurant Brands International (RBI), is displaying what many would consider unwise resistance.
Several Canadian retail icons have crumbled due to weak managerial strategies. This was the case with Eaton’s and most recently, Sears. Most closures, though, have been self-inflicted. -

Kaasalainen and Sussman: Let's discuss end-of-life issues – now
Many people have been faced with critical decisions for family and friends who are at the end of their lives. This can stress and burden family members trying to navigate the social and health care systems even as they face impending loss and grief.
A large proportion of these struggles occur in long-term care homes, where almost one-third of residents die every year. To compound the issue, families often face making decisions for loved ones who have lost cognitive capacity, leaving families and -
