Not everyone likes the hospital site
Re: Looking for conspiracies where they never existed, Jan. 20.
A citizens’ group calling itself Reimagine Ottawa questions (and rightly so) the surprising decision concerning the Ottawa Hospital’s new Civic campus on the Central Experimental Farm. David Reevely questions the expertise of Reimagine Ottawa, suggesting it has no expertise to make recommendations. &nbs

Gatineau pharmacy's fentanyl supply robbed
A Gatineau pharmacy’s fentanyl supply was robbed Saturday, Gatineau police said.
At around noon, a woman described as 5-10 and in her 30s threatened staff at a Familiprix on 225 Saint-Joseph Blvd. demanding they hand over their fentanyl supply, police said. She ran off in an unknown direction, and her whereabouts are unknown.
A similar incident happened Jan. 11, police said.
Gatineau police are investigating.
Anyone with information is asked to call Gatineau police at 819 243-4636, o -
Beloved Ottawa golf pro in palliative care still teaching lessons for life
Warren Grant escaped death once before.
Twenty-six years later, there won’t be another Houdini-style manoeuver. And he’s letting everyone know it’s OK.
“That’s the way things go,” Grant says, matter-of-factly, bedridden at the Saint-Vincent Hospital, in palliative care.
No one knows how much time the popular Ottawa golf pro has left. Doctors gave him weeks to live and that was months ago. He’s been off antibiotics for seven weeks — side effects-fre -
Breaking tobacco habit among homeless cuts opioid use, Ottawa study finds
A new Ottawa study suggests that cutting the rate of smoking among the poor and homeless can also reduce their use of street drugs, including opioids such as heroin and fentanyl.
The study, conducted by researchers at The Bridge Engagement Centre, enlisted 80 inner-city residents in Ottawa. It offered them free nicotine replacement therapies — patches, gum or inhalers — along with peer support, mental health counselling and life skills training in a comprehensive approach to their ad -
Reevely: Conviction of McGuinty's former chief of staff not Liberals' worst loss of the week
The acquittal of a second-tier aide to current Premier Kathleen Wynne will probably hurt the Ontario Liberals a lot more than the criminal conviction of her predecessor’s chief of staff.
The news came in one-two punches at the end of last week. Thursday night, Patricia Sorbara left the Liberal campaign team she once headed, just about five months before the next election. It was also four months after a judge dismissed charges she and local party powerbroker Gerry Lougheed tried to bribe a -

Police say shootings 'have all been targeted' in violent start to year
Ottawa police say they are “confident” in their investigations into a recent spate of shootings across the city, while saying they are actively working to curb the flow of illegal guns on the streets.
In a letter to Ottawa Police Services Board, posted Monday on Mayor Jim Watson’s website, police deputy chief Steve Bell explains the force is “actively investigating” 11 shootings since Jan. 1, involving six victims and two deaths.
Bell said police are “followin -

Hunt Club, Westboro, Kanata and Barrhaven have hot files on planning committee agenda in 2018
City council’s planning committee meets on Tuesday for the first time in 2018 with some hot files on the agenda.
Four of the more interesting applications involve a property on Hunt Club Road and lands in Westboro, Kanata and Barrhaven.
Proposed retirement home and hotel have Hunt Club councillors worried about traffic
Claridge Homes wants to build a retirement home and hotel, both eight storeys, on Hunt Club Road at the Airport Parkway.
The proposed development, a combination of five prop -

Three recent Broadway hit musicals (Come From Away, School of Rock and Beautiful — The Carole King Musical) plus the new Lincoln Center production of the classic musical The King And I will come to the National Arts Centre between fall 2018 and summer 2019.
As well, Broadway Across Canada will bring the smash musical Hamilton to the NAC during its 2019-2020 season, the company announced Monday. It did not give dates for Hamilton’s run at the NAC.

Man arrested after boy, 14, flashed near Brockville school
A 39-year-old Brockville man was arrested Saturday after a 14-year-old boy reported that a man had yelled at him on the street to get his attention, then allegedly exposed himself.
Police collared a suspect who was shirtless under his coat and still had his pants undone soon after the incident, which happened on Windsor Drive near Thousand Islands Secondary School around 6 p.m.
“At the time, he was well under the influence of alcohol,” according to police in the city about 100 k -
Sheehan: Sens-Ottawa love affair is a two-way street
We need to have a direct discussion about the Senators.
Frankly, Ottawa, you have a bad track record in your relationships with sports teams: Riders, Renegades, Lynx, Senators. You’ve even tried, and failed at trying again. I know it’s not something you want to hear, but relationships are two-way streets. You need to look in the mirror and give yourself an honest New Year’s evaluation.
Yes, Eugene Melnyk demonstrated poor timing, by suggesting right before the NHL 100 Classic o -
Haché: How to improve Ottawa’s EquiPass program
Low-income public transit riders got a gift when Transit Commission Chair Stephen Blais announced that the single-ride EquiPass would be available on Jan. 1, six months early. While elected officials have shown leadership to make public transit more affordable for people living in poverty, further improvements are needed.
In December, after significant community support was voiced for it, Ottawa committed to reducing the cost of a single ride on OC Transpo by 50 per cent. Those who qualify can n -

Driveway shooting: 'I have to move now … They could come back'
Hassan Abdul Hussein left his job and home in Beirut in 1988 during Lebanon’s civil war and came to Canada because he no longer felt safe.
On Sunday night, as he lay in a room at the Civic campus of The Ottawa Hospital waiting for doctors to remove the bullet that has been lodged in his left knee for two days, the 55-year-old father of four wondered aloud if he might have to move yet again for the same reason, and believes the city has to step up and address its crime situation.

Trump’s border wall stymies US special forces but unlikely to stop those willing to build a tunnel
The Associated Press recently reported on the tests being conducted on U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed border wall with Mexico.
“Recent assaults by tactical teams on prototypes of President Donald Trump’s proposed wall with Mexico indicate their imposing heights should stop border crossers, a U.S. official with direct knowledge of the rigorous assessment told The Associated Press. House Works: Manual labour for kids earns them more than just money
In the mid-1970s, my mom and dad hired a builder to add a garage onto our cookie cutter bungalow.
The man’s name was Andy Steier, a Hungarian Jew from Budapest who had stories about riding on a Nazi prisoner train as a boy during the Second World War.
Mr. Steier created ABP Construction here in Canada, and watching him work as boss was my first introduction to the entrepreneurial life.
I was 12 years old at the time and I’d never before seen a man earn money in direct proportio -

Egan: Wife is dead, bad driver gets $2K fine, furious husband finds out days later
At the dining room table, covered with blank, unhelpful government forms, Robert Cadieux begins to describe the worst day of his life — June 28, 2017 — when his wife, Kristine, died at his fingertips.
It was just before 7 a.m. and the couple were westbound on Highway 401, near the Avonmore overpass, when they emerged from a construction zone and were suddenly rear-ended. He remembers Kristine, 32, who was driving, immediately cursing while trying to keep the van under control.

Today's letters: On parking and political correctness
Parking enforcement weak in Westboro
Re: 80,639 requests later, Ottawa bylaw might make case for more resources, Jan. 15.
While I expect the head of Bylaw, Roger Chapman, is correct that the increase in the number of parking-related calls was in part due to Ottawa 2017 events, he should come to Westboro during the day and see what our neighbourhood looks like. Streets within easy walking of Richmond Road are wall-to-wall vehicles and in some cases, they block private driveways.

Kaplan: Government's ally in a fairer economy should be business
For at least the past few decades, business advocacy groups have maintained cosy relations with most federal, provincial and municipal governments.
Local and provincial chambers of commerce have generally had easy access to the ears of mayors and premiers, while national business groups and trade associations have enjoyed regular and friendly access to members of Parliament.
While it’s hard to determine whether these relationships have had any kind of real effect on policymaking, it’ -

Dunlop: Gosh, there are many confusing LCBO labels
I understand that the LCBO at the last minute has stopped the Carleton Place Stalwart Brewing Company’s Dr. Feelgood India Pale Ale from being offered in its retail outlets.
The reason behind this is that the logo (a snake wrapped around a beer-stirring paddle) might confuse consumers; they may think that this product may offer medical benefits because the label is similar to the “Rx” symbol we see on prescriptions.

According to an LCBO spokesperson, the label -

Update: Freezing rain in forecast, Rideau Canal Skateway closes
Eastern Ontario is in for some messy weather for the start of the week — and don’t expected to enjoy a skate on the Rideau Canal until things improve later in the week.
Environment Canada issued an updated weather warning Sunday afternoon with a forecast of snow spreading across central Ontario on Monday, then several centimetres of snow mixed with ice pellets later in the day before the precipitation gives over to freezing rain.
The weather agency said a “significant freezing -
'I have to move now … They could come back'
Hassan Abdul Hussein left his job and home in Beirut in 1988 during Lebanon’s civil war and came to Canada because he no longer felt safe.

Email trail reveals how Carleton University responded to 2009 Hassan Diab media storm
A Freedom of Information request into the hiring and dismissal of Hassan Diab at Carleton University in 2009 sheds light on the chain of events that led to his termination in a firestorm of controversy.
Diab was a suspect in a 1980 synagogue bombing in Paris when it was revealed in the media that he had been hired as a contract instructor in sociology in the summer of 2009. He was dismissed that same day. Diab was extradited to France in November 2014. He was released from a French prison -
As retail spending sputters, malls are evolving
Shopping malls now want to be known as a place where teens can just hang out.
The exit of Sears Canada is casting a further shadow over the future of the staid shopping centre as the retail industry continues to deal with increased competition, lower consumer spending and more stores choosing to close their doors.
Sears, which officially closed all of it’s Ontario stores this month leaves many shopping centres, including Carlingwood Mall, where it occupied close to 180,000 square fee -
High debt levels, increased interest rates expected to slow consumer spend in 2018
Of all the factors affecting the retail industry in 2018, the increased amount of consumer debt held by Canadians seems to loom the largest.
High debt levels, coupled with rising interest rates, will force many Canadians to begin paying down what they’ve borrowed throughout the recession. Those payments, and the higher interest rate, which make consumer loans more expensive, will leave consumers will less money to spend on retail or entertainment.
