Former Citizen and Sun columnist's mystery nominated for prestigious Edgar Award
Mystery writers occasionally encounter mysteries in their personal life.
Consider Ottawa author Ron Corbett, who had to pick himself off the floor Friday afternoon when he discovered he’d been nominated for a prestigious Edgar Allen Poe Award.
The Edgar Awards are presented by the Mystery Writers of America. Corbett’s Ragged Lake, published by Toronto’s ECW Press in October, was among six nominees in the Best Paperback Original category.

Six escape fire in South Keys home
Six adults safely escaped smoke and flames in their South Keys-area home Friday morning, and Ottawa Fire Services were asking motorists to avoid the area.
Firefighters were called to the home on Southgate Road near Johnson Road at 8:02 a.m. Occupants noticed smoke on the main floor of the two-story attached home, then called back to report flames.
Crews declared a working fire and were able to get inside the house for a “quick” attack aimed at preventing its spread.

Company sues city over alleged collusion by towing foe
An Ottawa towing company claims a competitor has been conspiring to win municipal government contracts and city hall is doing nothing about it.
Gervais Motors lays much of the blame on the City of Ottawa in its lawsuit filed at Superior Court. The company, which started in 1934, claims damages totalling more than $5 million in “lost profits.”
The lawsuit also names as defendants Ottawa Metro Towing and Recovery Inc. and Metro Towing and Recovery Group Inc., two companies that Gervais -
Reevely: Sloppy questioning of Civic hospital deal feeds cynicism, not hope
Clive Doucet returned to city hall this week, complaining about the year-old decision on where to put a new hospital.
One thing about Doucet, on display through his whole 13-year career as the civic councillor for Capital ward, is he cares deeply. He loves Ottawa with an open heart. He wants it to be better, bigger, warmer, more. He is a poet. So when he showed up with four “distinguished panellists” to demand an inquiry into the decision by the federal, provincial and municipal gove -
An alleged drunk driver left this Ottawa motorcyclist devastatingly injured. She’s chronicling her road to recovery
Stephanie Albert decided to blog because she thought she was dying — and she didn’t want to go quietly.
At the time, the pain was so intense and her mind so muddied by opioids that Albert believed she was scratching out her final testimony: a memorial to the last days of a life and body shattered by an alleged drunk driver.
“When I took that first picture of myself, I was so high on painkillers, I thought, ‘This is it, this is my ode, my tribute, I hope someone reads -
Nurses association says it will use public inquiry to focus on broken long-term care system
The professional association that represents Ontario’s nurses says it will use its influence at a provincial inquiry into long-term care deaths to help improve the ailing system.
The inquiry into the murders of eight seniors in southwestern Ontario presents a “once in a lifetime” opportunity to fix the entire system, the head of the association said Friday.
“By doing that, we do justice to the lives lost,” said Doris Grinspun, CEO of the Registered Nurses Associatio -

Editorial: Trudeau, Trump and abortion
On the first anniversary of Donald Trump’s inauguration, the president indeed behaves like a one-year-old. But behind the embarrassing tweets, foul language and regular White House hissy fits lurks a clear strategy to reshape American politics and culture.
On Friday, Trump warmly addressed the annual Washington “March for Life” anti-abortion rally via video link. Defenders of women’s autonomy over their own bodies shivered at his pledge to work to undo their hard-won acce -

Cappies review: All Saints' Urinetown hilarious despite dark undertones
Show #5: Urinetown, the MusicalWhere: All Saints High SchoolDirector: Shawna McSheffrey

However, All Saints High School’s production of this comedy proved that even the most disgusting of ideas could be made into a compelling story.
