TORONTO The case of an 11-year-old Toronto girl who made headlines when she falsely claimed that a scissors-wielding stranger had cut her hijab highlights the complex ethical issues that arise when a child is thrust into the national spotlight, experts say.
Police said this week their investigation found the alleged incident didn’t happen, just days after the girl and her family gave a detailed account during a high-profile news conference.
The allegations captured international attention

Reevely: Ottawa police disband 'diminished' race-relations committee, promising better replacement
The Ottawa police committee on race relations needs to talk less and do more to fix a crisis in local policing, its civilian co-chair says.
“I really feel like every officer at this point, there’s a morale issue,” said Ketcia Peters, who represents Haitian-Canadians on the Community and Police Action Committee, or COMPAC. “They don’t feel supported by their executive rank, they don’t feel supported by the community either.”
The provincial government -
Scanlan: Virtue and Moir make history carrying Canada's flag together into South Korea
Theirs is a sport of grace in motion, and so even a stroll to a podium in the halls of Parliament is a dance of sorts for Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir.
And dance they did, with light hearts, to accept the honour of being Canada’s first duo flag-bearers for the opening ceremony at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Some Olympians, from Canada and elsewhere, have viewed the opening flag-bearer duty as a distraction, if not an outright curse for competitors in the five-ring -
'He should have got more,' says victim's family as Lonnie Leafloor killer sentenced
Lonnie Leafloor’s family said they are “disappointed” his killer, Idris Abdulgani, will be parole-eligible after serving 12 years of a life sentence for the October 2016 drug-fuelled killing.
Barry Leafloor turned away and bowed his head to the courtroom floor as Abdulgani, 22, apologized to the family from the prisoner’s box Tuesday.
“We were disappointed in 12 years (parole ineligibility),” the victim’s brother said outside court. “We all thought -

Man charged in pair of east-side robberies
A 53-year-old man is facing charges in a pair of east-side robberies, police say.
Paul Doyle faces two counts of robbery, two counts of wearing a disguise and one count of possession of a weapon.
Already behind bars, he is scheduled to appear in court Friday.
Police said on Dec. 10, a suspect armed with a knife walked into a corner store on Shakespeare Street near Ste. Anne Avenue in Vanier and fled with an undisclosed sum of cash.
Two days later, a suspect walked into a bank on nearby Montreal -
No formal policing to keep federal dollars away from predatory journals
The federal agencies that distribute $3 billion a year for university and hospital research are counting on academics to police each other and prevent colleagues from publishing in “predatory” journals that print anything for cash.
The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) give research grants to professors and doctors.
They say they don’t take any -

House Works: Your questions on drying logs, wood siding, cracked windowsills
Drying logs for turning
Q: What’s the best way to store and season round, fresh oak logs 12″ to 18″ long for wood turning on a lathe later?
This dried, quarter section of log is being refined so it can be glued with other wood for use later.
A: It’s pretty much impossible to stop round logs from cracking in at least one place as they dry unless you do one of two things.
If you split the wood into quarter-sections of logs, then you can store them under cover and they -
Want to buy a surplus Canadian Forces Lee Enfield rifle? Hold on
Defence Watch continues to receive email from readers inquiring about the status of the program to replace the Lee Enfield rifles being used by the Canadian Rangers.
A number of readers hope to eventually purchase one of the rifles if they are to be made surplus.
That won’t be happening for a while, if that option does emerge at all.
The timing of the disposal of any surplus Lee Enfield rifles will depend on the project to provide the Rangers with new rifles.
What is the status of that?

Ottawa academic Hassan Diab is back home, free for the first time in a decade
Ottawa academic Hassan Diab is back home with his family and a free man for the first time in a decade.
The 64-year-old former University of Ottawa and Carleton University professor walked out of a Paris maximum security prison on Friday shortly after France dropped terrorism charges against him but his departure from France, coordinated with Global Affairs in Ottawa and Paris, was far more rapid than expected.
Diab, who is on a no-fly list, flew back home via Iceland on a temporary, one-journey -
Cohen: Donald Trump, a deranged parrot in a gilded cage
In the Age of Trump, American democracy is under siege. The president’s attack on the judiciary, the media and the electoral process are among the existential threats to the United States.
David Frum makes this case in his important new book, Trumpocracy: The Corruption of the American Republic. His call is clear and urgent, like a fire-bell in the night. He joins a legion of honest liberals and conservatives who worry about the erosion of institutions through greed, malfeasance, apathy, i -
Hijabs and hate crimes – lessons from the 'hijab-cutting' story
Just as the villagers feel cheated when the boy cries wolf over and over, so, too, might some people feel frustrated at the statement from Toronto Police that an alleged incident in which an 11-year-old girl had her hijab cut on her way to school turned out not to have taken place at all. I personally felt slightly relieved.
Last year, one of my own students, who was in Grade 8 at the time, was approached by a hateful man on her way to school. She was with her older brother, who was in Grade 10. -

Good Samaritan rescues elderly woman with hypothermia
A woman who opened the door to an elderly woman wandering in the Hunt Club area without winter clothing during a frostbite advisory early Tuesday morning may have saved her from serious injury or even death, paramedics said.
The Good Samaritan saw the woman walking on Uplands Drive near Paul Anka Drive at 6:15 a.m. She took the octogenarian into her home, provided her with warm clothes and called 911.

It's going to be cold and snowy but there's a silver lining
Ottawa is finally coming out of the deep freeze.
There’s nary a special weather statement or frostbite warning in sight and watch for above-zero temperatures by the weekend.
Tuesday’s forecast is for a high of -12 C and periods of light snow totaling 2 cm, a 40 per cent chance of evening flurries and a low of -15 C.

Egan: Pastor says abortion clause means he can't apply for federal job funding
Rev. Tim Moyle looks after three small Catholic parishes in the Upper Ottawa Valley — hustling between churches on Saturday evening and Sunday morning.
One priest, one secretary and a whack of territory around Allumettes Island, on the Quebec side of the river across from Pembroke, all working in mysterious ways.
This summer, as in others, Rev. Moyle hoped to hire three summer students — two to help with lawns and yard work, another to do office work, including digitizing baptismal r -
Editorial: Reveal the case against Vice-Admiral Mark Norman
A little more than a year ago, the second in command of the Canadian Forces, Vice-Admiral Mark Norman, was removed from his job by Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Jon Vance. The reasons were kept secret, even as the RCMP was removing laptops, phones and records – including many of his wife’s personal files – from his home.
Today, while a few details of the investigation have leaked out, Norman still has not been charged, and has never had an opportunity to defend himself in any off -
Science of Winter: Bears sleep through winter — but not as deeply as you'd think
Today we continue our annual look at what makes this season special, a time when nature is doing much more than just turning dormant for three months. Welcome to the Science of Winter.
There’s hibernating and there’s hibernating among winter animals. In the cold season, black bears go to sleep, but not as deeply as you might think.
Here’s a hint. Mid-winter is not a safe time to decide the bear is asleep so you can poke it with a stick. It might wake up and object.

Black war hero honoured posthumously as Martin Luther King 'Dreamkeeper'
Pvt. Lloyd States never saw himself as a pioneer in the civil rights movement.
He was a soldier, and like many veterans of battle, he came home to New Glasgow, N.S., after the Second World War a broken man.
“Horrible things happened at night. He was in combat mode and we were the enemy,” his daughter, Margaret States, said Monday after she accepted the 2018 Ottawa DreamKeepers’ Jean Augustine Life Achievement Award on behalf of her father, who died in 1996. The award was given
