City hall blog: Watson on LRT timelines, central library and tax promises
Mayor Jim Watson seems well-rested after recovering from appendicitis. In my interview with him this week, he admitted he couldn’t resist keeping his BlackBerry by his side while keeping a low profile (I guess that iPhone didn’t work out).
I wrote about Watson’s reaction to all the hubbub surrounding the Ottawa Senators and this year’s municipal election, but here are some other things we discussed during the interview in his office on Thursday.

Spotlight: How a sarcophagus inspired poker-playing artist Maggie Wesley
Spotlight is a weekly look at some of the people who contribute to the Ottawa area’s arts community. This week we visited multimedia artist Maggie Wesley at her Dunrobin home. Her current exhibit, Spirit of Play, continues at the Shenkman Arts Centre until Feb. 6.
“We started playing poker around 1973. We were all nurses working in psychiatry at the Royal Ottawa Hospital, in the formative group. And one of the women, Kate, decided that a poker game would be fun. And I still remember -

French courts drop terror allegations against Ottawa prof Hassan Diab
Former Ottawa university professor Hassan Diab was released from a Paris maximum security prison Friday after two investigating judges dismissed terrorism allegations against him and effectively closed the case.
The academic is now a free man for the first time in almost a decade.
Diab, a Lebanon-born Canadian citizen, has spent more than three years in pre-trial detention awaiting the decision. He was the sole suspect in the October 1980 terrorist bombing of a Paris synagogue in which four pass -

Paramedic house calls helping health system cope with nasty flu season
Paramedic Robert Wilson makes house calls. And those visits are making the difference for dozens of high-risk Ottawa residents struggling through a nasty flu season.
Wilson, a community paramedic liaison, is part of an innovative program launched by the Champlain LHIN in December that deploys paramedics to seniors residences around the city in an attempt to prevent the most vulnerable flu patients from landing in overcrowded hospitals. Paramedics assess the patients and can treat them for dehydr -
Gormley: Politics, the Saudi arms deal and morality – and the Liberals
While better may always be possible, better may not be the preferred option for those who fear the self-examination that improvement requires.
Few understand this fact more intimately than the Liberal government; few things have revealed it more nakedly than the Liberals’ behaviour throughout the $15-billion Saudi arms deal.
By refusing to throw out a lawsuit against the government, this week a judge ensured that details of Saudi use of Canadian-made weapons will be released: We’re a -
