Egan: If segregation is no longer discipline, what now with bad inmates?
Segregation in Ontario prisons used to be a form of punishment — versions of “the hole” — to deter or punish bad behaviour or serve as a means of protecting vulnerable inmates.
Not so anymore, says a union leader representing correctional officers at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre.
”It’s changed, with the new segregation, to the point where it’s a joke,” says Scott Forde, 44, a guard for 17 years and vice-president of Local 411 of the Ontario -
New skating trail (under an orchard) opens near Metcalfe this weekend
As a boy skating on the frozen South Castor River, Trevor Jamieson didn’t want to be any place else in the world.
As an adult, Jamieson returned from the city back to rural life near Metcalfe, about 30 kilometres southeast of Ottawa. Skating is a central theme in his new venture.
On Saturday at his property on Yorks Corners Road, about a five-minute drive east of Metcalfe, Jamieson is launching the grand opening for the RiverOak Estates skating trail. There will be kids games, a bonfire an -
Reevely: Let us try, once more, to save Sparks Street
With light-rail stations due to open nearby, a new Indigenous centre promised for Wellington Street and a push on by the federal government to spiff up the Parliamentary Precinct, the city is holding a public consultation on Saturday on how to revive Sparks Street. Again.
Wait, no, it’s too soon to be cynical. I’ll hold off for a few hundred words.
The session will be led personally by Mayor Jim Watson. That’s unusual, and a sign of how seriously the city is taking it. The city -
City doesn't have a financial responsibility to give lifeline to Sens, Mayor Watson says
The City of Ottawa has no financial responsibility to keep an NHL team in the municipality, even if the owner of the Ottawa Senators has mused about relocating the club, Mayor Jim Watson says.
“We should not be using property tax dollars to subsidize an NHL team. That’s not the role of a municipal government, in my opinion,” Watson said on Thursday in his first interview with this newspaper since his recovery from appendicitis.
Watson looked forward to being at the NHL 100 -
Activists say death following presumed overdose at health centre highlights need for more supervised sites
A young woman collapsed in a bathroom at the Sandy Hill Community Health Centre earlier this week and died in hospital from what’s presumed to be a drug overdose.
The death happened Monday as the health centre continued its years-long wait to open a supervised injection site.
“We know that had this overdose happened in a supervised environment, they would have survived,” said Rob Boyd, director of the health centre’s harm reduction program.
The woman, who has no -
Security industry vet appointed to Ottawa police board
A new provincially appointed member of the Ottawa police board is set to be sworn in at the end of the month.
The board announced Thursday that the lieutenant governor of Ontario has appointed Andrea Blaustein for a two-year term. That appointment began on Monday and would end in 2020.
Blaustein is an honours graduate from Algonquin College in security management. She has worked in the security industry in various levels of government, and studied criminology and law at Carleton University -

Bullets strike three east-end homes on second anniversary of gang homicide
When bullets struck three homes – two of them with children inside – on Claremont Drive in the east end over the supper hour Wednesday, it marked a grim anniversary.
Exactly two years earlier, a neighbour recalled, she had called 911 and tried to comfort Mohamed Najdi, a dying Crip gang member who’d been lured to the dead-end street where he was shot in the back.
“They picked a quiet neighbourhood,” said the woman, who declined to give her name, gesturing to t -

Driver, 70, loses license for three days after crashing into LCBO store
A 70-year-old man was slapped with an alcohol-related three-day licence suspension after driving his car into the side of the LCBO store in Killaloe.
Both were banged up.
It was about 3:20 p.m Wednesday when members of the OPP detachment in the town about 160 km west of Ottawa were called to a single-vehicle crash at the Queen Street liquor store.
The driver from the Township of Killaloe, Hagarty and Richards was also charged with having open liquor in a public place.

Rideau Centre to open electric vehicle charging stations
Electric vehicle operators will have a new spot to charge up while they shop with the opening of a new charging centre in the CF Rideau Centre parking lot.
The charging station is part of a national program by property owners Cadillac Fairview.

Today's letters: Sparks street, drugs and mayoral candidates
Sparks should return to its past
While I have registered for Saturday’s townhall on Sparks Street, I’d like to get my four cents in. (One penny for every decade I have performed there.)
As a longtime busker on Sparks, beginning in the late ’70s, I have seen how the original vision, as well as the ill-fated revisions to Sparks Street have functioned.
The original design was liked by everyone. There were food, flower and fruit vendors. There was a Zellers, a Woolworths, a Hardwar -
Limit access to nuclear weapons for “petulant and foolish” Trump, say retired nuke missile officers
Seventeen former nuclear missile launch officers have sent a letter to the U.S. congress raising their concerns about what they have called President Donald Trump’s unfettered access to nuclear weapons.
They warn that the current U.S. nuclear launch process “poses a clear and present danger to the country and the world.” The officers, who have all served in missiles silos, point out that “No one — not the secretary of defense, not the attorney general, not Con -

Freezing rain ends after causing school bus cancellations, outages and crashes
It’s a messy one out there.
Environment Canada’s freezing rain warning ended at about 11 a.m. after the precipitation caused cancelled school buses across the region, power outages east of the city and some traffic-snarling collisions.
Meanwhile, the agency has also issued a special weather statement alerting that mild and wet conditions could lead to pooling water before a cold front sweeps through bringing potentially “significant” amounts of snow.

Meet Friedemann Weinhardt: Award-winning designer is not swayed by trends
When interior designer Friedemann Weinhardt won the coveted Designer of the Year award at this year’s Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association gala, he said winning never gets old.
That’s because the man, known for his sleek, contemporary kitchens and bathrooms, has collected more than 100 awards from various organizations over his 30-year career.
This is the first year he entered his work in this category.

Tiny distances will make a big difference in Saturday snowstorm
A map from the U.S. National Weather Service shows the big snowstorms coming Saturday may clobber one spot but leave a only light dusting a few kilometres away.
The map shows probabilities, not the amount of snow.
Here’s how it works:
This map illustrates the likelihood of getting at least six inches (15 centimetres) of snow by the end of Saturday, and you can pick different time periods on the U.S. National Weather Service winter precipitation page.

Russia, China shut out of Canadian conference on Korea – value of meeting questioned
The Canadian government has organized a meeting in Vancouver on Jan. 16 for various countries to come up with an international response to North Korea’s nuclear weapons and missile program. The plan is to seek “a more peaceful, prosperous and nuclear-free future” Korean Peninsula
That’s a fine idea, except two of the top players in the region and the countries believed to have the most influence on North Korea– China and Russia – aren’t invited.

Environment Canada’s freezing rain warning remained in effect Thursday morning leading to cancelled school buses across the region, power outages east of the city and some traffic-snarling collisions.

Skateway closed Wednesday night
If you didn’t lace up the skates and get out on the Rideau Canal Skateway this week, you’ve missed your opportunity to skate virtually the entire distance — at least for now.
Three days after opening a section that pushed the total ice available to seven kilometres (of the Skateway’s 7.8-km length), the National Capital Commission announced that the ice surface would be closed as of 10 p.m. Wednesday night.
“Snow, freezing rain or water on the ice surface may hide s -

Whistleblower Shiv Chopra remembered for 'speaking truth to power'
Shiv Chopra did not fear wading into controversy. He would do it again and again. The government scientist said it was his job to blow the whistle when the evidence showed that drugs used for animals posed a danger to the safety of Canada’s food system.
Chopra died Sunday at the age of 84 after spending much of the past three decades in the spotlight. He was a crank to some and a hero to others.
