Demonstrators gathered on Wednesday in front of the Tim Hortons franchise on Sparks Street to pressure the restaurant chain to reverse benefit clawbacks implemented after the province’s minimum wage increase went into effect on Jan. 1.
The Ontario Federation of Labour and the Fight for $15 and Fairness Campaign held a joint day of action across the province to denounce the company for eliminating or reducing workers’ benefits such as paid breaks, access to basic drug and dental benef

Laura Brahaney sentenced 5 1/2 years for luring, kidnapping Vanier man
An Ottawa woman found guilty in a string of violent robberies was sentenced five-and-a-half years for her role in one of the crimes, where a Vanier man was lured from a bar, then robbed and beaten by two accomplices.
Laura Brahaney, 28, will serve a total of 26 months in prison after Justice Marc Labrosse sentenced Brahaney Wednesday, and ruled on the credit she will get for time already served since her Sept. 2014 arrest.
The judge said Brahaney’s role in the robbery “was more than -
Ottawa action star Alain Moussi is making movies for kicks
Among the stars of the upcoming film Kickboxer: Retaliation are the global household names Jean-Claude Van Damme (“the Muscles from Brussels”) and Mike (“Iron Mike”) Tyson. But neither of them is the movie’s star.
Instead, doling out the film’s righteous punishment is Alain Moussi.
So what’s his nickname?
“I don’t have one yet,” he laughs. “It has to be assigned.” Then, he remembers that when he was a stuntman, before he bec -
Province's new wage laws won't apply to students under 18, film and TV workers
The province of Ontario has quietly passed exemptions to its Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs law, removing firefighters, film and TV industry workers, and students under the age of 18 from certain aspects of the new legislation.
Some experts contend the exemptions could open the door for employers to exploit certain workers, particularly those under the age of 18, by forcing them to work for far less than their peers.
The legislation, which came into effect on Jan. 1, raised the minimum wage i -
Skateway closing at 10 p.m. Wednesday night
If you didn’t lace up the skates and get out on the Rideau Canal Skateway this week, you’ve missed your opportunity to skate virtually the entire distance — at least for now.
Three days after opening a section that pushed the total ice available to seven kilometres (of the Skateway’s 7.8-km length), the National Capital Commission announced that the ice surface would be closed as of 10 p.m. Wednesday night.
“Snow, freezing rain or water on the ice surface may hide s -

Reevely: Redevelopment plans mean the end for Fifth Avenue Court in the Glebe
Minto wants to tear down its Fifth Avenue Court building in the Glebe, ending a 40-year run for an interesting public space that’s never quite lived up to its promise.
Under plans submitted to the city and now up for public comment, the commercial strip along Bank Street between Fourth and Fifth avenues (home to Von’s restaurant at one end and Pure Gelato at the other) stays intact but everything behind it goes. That’s a combined office and retail complex constructed in the lat -
Preston Street restaurant, Salt, closes
Another high-profile Ottawa eatery quietly closed its doors in late December, leaving staff with little notice that it would be ceasing operations.
Salt restaurant located at 345 Preston Street sent notices to its employees on Dec. 27 that the business wouldn’t be open any longer. According to employees affected, the owners made the decision to focus on other business opportunities. Employees were paid out remaining wages and vacation entitlements.

Release risk list of long-term care homes: NDP leader
Saying families have a right to the information, Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath demanded Wednesday that the province make its secret list of high-risk long-term care homes public.
“Families with loved ones in care are now being left to wonder if their loved ones, their mom or dad, is in a facility that the ministry itself calls high risk,” she said.
Horwath made the demand following a story by this newspaper about the list of high- and medium-risk homes across Ontario, and the pro -

A small breakthrough for brain cancer, a new outlook for a patient
Denis Raymond put his life on hold when he was diagnosed with incurable brain cancer more than four years ago.
He knew people, on average, live about a year after being diagnosed with glioblastoma, the deadly brain cancer that killed Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie last year.
Raymond, then 26, had been planning to do a master’s degree in social work at University of Ottawa, but it didn’t seem to make sense given his diagnosis and treatment.
Denis Raymond is continuing to look to -

Celebrate the new year with pinball, perogies and polka-rock
One of Ottawa’s most popular party bands, Ukrainia, celebrates the Ukrainian New Year on Saturday with a House of Targ bash on Saturday, adding its polka-rock blitz to the basement bar’s signature blend of pinball and perogies. There’s been a slight shift in musical direction for the 15-year-old band, as you can hear on its third and latest release, Shadow Era, which came out last year. Synthesizers and scratching sounds are part of the action, as well as a guest appearance by f -

Food bank prospers as donors re-gift Loblaw price-fixing cards
Canadians have turned Loblaw’s bread price-fixing scandal into a push to fight food poverty donating their gift cards to food banks across the country.
A social media movement encouraging people to donate their $25 Loblaw gift cards to local food banks has already generated an increase in donations, according to the Ottawa Food Bank.
“It’s a grassroots movement that’s growing every day,” said Michael Maidment, the food bank’s executive director.

Glavin: Canadian relations with Iran should be a non-starter
Now that Iran’s Khomeinist tyranny is filling its jails with protesters and threatening to impose the death penalty upon anyone who continues to defy the ayatollahs’ rule, it may well be that the working class rebellion that has been churning through the streets of 80 cities across the country for the past two weeks has run its course. That’s what the Islamic Revolutionary Guard claims, anyway.
But the IRGC says a lot of things.
It’s hard to know, owing to Iran’s ir -
Graydon: Here's why we should feature more women in the public sphere
Here’s a no-cost resolution for companies seeking to attract more talented women to help diversify their workforce: In 2018, they might feature a few of the ones they already employ in more public roles.
In our contradictory world, girls are told they can grow up to be whatever they want, but many of the most visible female role models are still pushing outdated definitions of what success looks like. Excessively groomed and superficially preoccupied reality TV stars in search of a husband -

Environment Canada makes it official with freezing rain warning
Nothing like a little freezing rain “warning” to start the day off.
It’s all part of this week’s crazy patchwork of weather extremes and the freezing rain is described as a signal of a warm front coming in overnight.
Environment Canada issued an official warning at about 11 a.m. that things were going to get slippery, saying light freezing rain is expected to develop at around 6 p.m.

We could get hit by freezing rain later today
Nothing like a little freezing rain “watch” to start the day off.
It’s all part of this week’s crazy patchwork of weather extremes and the freezing rain is described as a signal of a warm front coming in overnight.
The slippery stuff could arrive in late afternoon or evening across southern and eastern Ontario.
