The Ottawa Humane Society is monitoring a contagious dog flu outbreak in southwest Ontario, but says the risk of the virus spreading is low.
Two dogs outside Windsor, Ont. have so far contracted the H3N2 virus, and several more dogs that had close contact with the affected dogs had mild respiratory problems on Monday, according to the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit. The virus is common in Asia and the U.S., but this is the first known outbreak of the strain in Canada. The two infected dogs wer

Gun runner sentenced 5 1/2 years for facilitating 'scourge of gun violence'
An Ottawa man was sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison Tuesday after pleading guilty to gun-running as part of a local arms ring ensnared in a police sting operation.
Luke McCormick, 25, surrounded by family and supporters, stood to face Justice Trevor Brown before he was escorted from the courtroom by Ottawa police.
Justice Brown called the sentence “shocking and crushing” for the father of a young child, but called it the “proper sentence in the public interest.&rdquo -
Security bollards to be installed outside of city hall after risk assessment
Ottawa City Hall needs security bollards around the building in case a terrorist tries to use a vehicle to run over people, the city’s security boss says.
“With all the stuff going on in the world and the low-tech terrorism that has taken place, it really behooves the city to ensure the safety and security of patrons to city hall,” said Pierre Poirier, manager of security and emergency management.
“We’ve taken a look at what is the probability of that kind of event -

Police again warn about phoney Uber driver after more than 10 women assaulted, robbed
Ottawa police have issued a second warning after receiving more than 10 reports about a man posing as an Uber driver and sexually assaulting women, especially in the ByWard Market.
The warning, issued Tuesday, says the man has offered a lift to women he sees leaving bars and restaurants and who appear to be intoxicated. The driver has reportedly sexually assaulted his victims once they are in his car.
The suspect also steals the victims’ debt and credit cards and PIN numbers, whi -
Canadian military preparing new training for Jordan – equipment delivered
The Canadian military has provided a variety of training over the last year and a half to the Jordanian armed forces. That has included a Canadian-led team which trained Jordanian military personnel in how to co-ordinate air strikes.
“Other training opportunities have been identified, as requested by the JAF, but are still in the planning stages,” Canadian Forces Capt. Vincent Bouchard told Defence Watch.
Equipment has also been donated by Canada, some of which came earlier las -

Nominations for mayor in the 2018 election don’t open for months, but Paul Dewar is spending long hours running by the Rideau Canal thinking about whether he belongs in the race.
“I’ve thought about it but I haven’t made any decisions at all,” the former Ottawa Centre New Democrat MP says. “A lot of people keep asking me … They’re seeing things not being run well and thinking we can do better. I don’t disagree with that.”

Fond memories of Canada’s yaksRe: Canada’s doomed yak strategy, Dec. 30
I fondly remember these black long-haired beasts, as I visited with them often with my father, Grant Carman. Their first home was the old Clarke Dairy Farm, then and now owned by the National Capital Commission, located on the northwest corner of Old Highway 16 and Fallowfield Road.
Every weekend we would visit the farm, and the yak. When the first yak was born in Canadian captivity, the Weekend Citizen featured -
Pets dead in fire that destroyed Osgoode farmhouse
The family who lived in a Stagecoach Road farmhouse could only watch, supported by friends, as their home was consumed by fire Tuesday.
Their pets — two dogs, a cat and a rabbit — apparently died in the blaze, the fire department said, and paramedics reported that one person was treated for smoke inhalation.
Firefighters are grateful that the residents heeded the 911 dispatcher’s warning to flee the fast-moving flames instead of searching for their pets, Ottawa Fire Services sp -
Dawson: Here's why it's time to legalize all drugs in Canada
Picture this: You’re an injection drug user, and, you’re worried the next time to use, you might die. So, you head for the Shepherds of Good Hope, where there’s a special trailer. There, you can use your drugs – and someone will save you if you overdose.
Upon arrival, though, there’s a police cruiser outside. Apparently it’s there a lot, at least according to Ottawa Inner City Health, which runs the injection site, and officers are questioning staff and client -
Fire and Fury – how could you get these two books mixed up?

Michael Wolff’s new tell-all book about Trump is called “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House.”
Wolff’s book became a mega bestseller because of Trump’s reaction, wh -

'No question' OPP officer at fault in serious collision, but criminal charges not warranted: SIU report
The province’s Special Investigations Unit says it has found ample evidence that an Ontario Provincial Police officer operated their police cruiser in a “careless manner” leading to a crash on Highway 401 near Gananoque in October 2016, however the officer should not face criminal charges in the incident.
The OPP cruiser struck a passenger vehicle in stop-and-go traffic, seriously injuring the 78-year-old driver.

Rescuers flock to save 100-plus finches found in foreclosed house
It was Friday when Jill Woods got a phone call: Please come and pick up 100-plus abandoned finches and some canaries for good measure.
Woods runs Feathered Haven Parrot Rescue in Smiths Falls, and takes in unwanted birds, but usually one at a time: A parrot here, a macaw there.
But in Ottawa, a woman had been evicted after a foreclosure. She was locked out while her birds were locked in, a flock that had multiplied beyond the woman’s ability to care for them or keep the home clean.

House Works: Ice dams begone as Canadian innovation melts rooftop ice, saves energy
Does your roof develop lots of ice in winter? If it does, there’s a Canadian innovation you might want to know about.
I installed this system in the fall on a roof that has regularly developed concerning levels of ice in the past, and I’ve been watching the performance this winter.
Just like regular electric rooftop de-icing cables, this system uses electricity. The difference is that it’s almost invisible and it uses less power.
Just about every roof in Canada forms at least a -
Cohen: Remembering the momentous year of 1968
Once in a generation, there comes a moment when everything changes. In the early 20th century, we might say that of 1914 and 1939, when both world wars began. Or 1929, when the markets crashed.
In the second half of the century, a pivotal year was 1968. The world seemed to come apart – shaken by war, revolution, assassination, protest, famine. It’s hard to believe so much could happen in so short a time, but 50 years ago, it did.
In the United States, the conventional wisdom was that -
