Businesses fighting city council’s decision to allow an emergency shelter and health complex on Vanier’s main drag want to avoid a new appeal tribunal, which will soon replace the Ontario Municipal Board.
It illustrates the legal strategy in light of a major swing happening in Ontario’s land-use appeal system. The bar will be set higher to overturn a council decision once the new rules go into effect.
In a 16-7 vote last November, the Salvation Army won council’s sup

Kyle and Julie Turris reach out as little Mason faces heart transplant
Kyle and Julie Turris might have moved to Nashville and a gig with the NHL Predators, but they continue to support community causes in the city they left behind.
When Julie saw a recent story about three-year-old Mason Godin preparing for a heart transplant, she contacted Mason’s mother, Erika, and offered a signed Turris souvenir (possibly a jersey) for a fundraiser being held Friday, Jan. 12. The event runs from 5-8 p.m. at the Kids Kingdom in Kanata.

Reevely: OC Transpo to test new tire treads for better snow traction
OC Transpo will test new tire treads this winter to try to get buses better traction in deep snow, says the transit agency’s director of operations.
“Once you get over that five-centimetre snow accumulation on roads, that’s when most vehicles, especially our buses, tend to have traction issues,” Troy Charter said Monday, as OC Transpo was fighting its way back from a morning rush hour made difficult by snow that began Sunday afternoon and fell for most of a day.

From wild to mild: What happened to the deep freeze
A southwest wind blew in mild air and moisture, finally, ending such a long streak of air literally from Siberia that someone could have built a case for Russian meddling with our weather.
The snow was the big news, and as it tapered off around 2 p.m. Monday, Ottawa had received 18 centimetres since it began falling late Sunday afternoon.
But it also turned mild in a big hurry.
Ottawa’s temperature started rising early Sunday, all day and through the night, and settled just below the freez -

Another bird in Ottawa neglects to migrate — but survives
Another nearly-frozen bird has turned up in Ottawa long after it should have flown south, but this one lived.
The black-crowned night heron was looking for food in open water last week, with ice forming on its feathers. Birder Bruce Di Labio saw it, picked it up and took it to the Wild Bird Care Centre on Moodie Drive.
“We’ve talked about birds lingering. Not a good idea,” he noted afterwards.
The little heron had frostbite on both feet but is otherwise unharmed. He’s on -
Editorial: Time's up on sexual harassment on the Hill
It has never been a secret that Parliament Hill can have a sexually charged atmosphere.
There has long been a culture of after-hours schmoozing and boozing, with plenty of power and celebrity and those who are staking their careers on being close to both.
But, as Hollywood and other industries face a rising chorus from women saying enough is enough, we have recently been reminded that our own corridors of power are not immune to the ugliness of sexual abuse and harassment that seem inevitably to -
Boyle will seek bail, has Crown's case against him, court hears
Lawyers for a former hostage held in Afghanistan, now behind bars in Ottawa, are still working on a bid for bail, a judge heard Monday.
Joshua Boyle, 34, made a brief court appearance by video from the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre on 15 charges including assault, sexual assault, unlawful confinement and causing someone to “take a noxious thing,” namely the anti-depressant Trazodone.
He next appears in court by video link on Jan. 15.

Man in hospital after falling 25 feet from roof
First-responders were called to a home in Carp on Monday after a man fell 25 feet from his roof and injured his head.
According to Ottawa paramedics, the man, in his 50s, was attempting to clear snow from the roof of a home on Rothbourne Road around 11:30 a.m. when he slipped and fell.
The man’s head was severely injured and he was not in condition to talk to paramedics when they arrived.
He was taken to hospital for further treatment. -
Burns: Progress on violence against women should be 2018 resolution
What, in the New Year, are we to make of the conviction and sentencing of Basil Borutski for the murders of Carol Culleton, Nathalie Warmerdam and Anastasia Kuzyk?
Do they represent a just outcome to a tragedy, or a symbol of responding after-the-fact to the abject failures of the criminal and family law responses to a man with a long history of violence against women? Sadly, the overwhelming evidence is that it is the latter.
It is easy to be unaware of just how enormous the problem of violence -

Today's letters: Kathleen Wynne, France and homeless dogs
One letter writer wonders where dogs that belong to the homeless are cared for in the winter, while the minimum wage hike debate continues, and another writer lauds Citizen columnist Andrew Cohen.
You, too, can write a letter to us: [email protected] cares for homeless dogs?
We see them in spring, summer and fall: dogs cuddled up to their homeless owners on the streets. But what happens to them in winter when their people have to go into shelters? Who takes care of these dogs? -

This police tweet perfectly shows why you need to slow down in the winter

Canadian team trains Jordanian military in how to co-ordinate airstrikes
A Canadian-led team has trained the first group of Jordanian military personnel in how to co-ordinate air strikes.
The Jordanian joint terminal attack controllers or JTACs were taught by three Canadian JTAC instructors. The team was supplemented by others from Australia, France, Poland, and the United States, according to Jane’s International Defence Review. Here's what it's like to clean an OC Transpo bus
This one’s for Priscilla.

Can they please hire ppl to clean them … Buses are absolutely disgusting. Had to complain about a chicken carcass left on bus for at least 3 weeks … Just watched it decompose to just bones on the daily ride … Ewwwww … And they smell like piss all the t -
Pellerin: Clean water, decent education – it's not too much to ask
Our series, “Politics for the rest of us,” continues today. It’s an attempt to see if Canadians can find common ground, without resorting to name-calling and insults, between differing views. Today, an Indigenous Canadian reaches across cultures:
Some say being an Indigenous person in Canada can mean being at home in two different worlds. It can be hard sometimes to know exactly where one fits. That’s the case for Craig Tiberi – at least when it comes to politics.

Brush off your car, save $110
An Ottawa traffic officer is posting Twitter photos of cars he pulled over Monday with thick coatings of snow.
One driver brushed off the windshield, but Phil Kane pulled over the driver and wrote a $110 ticket anyway as thick snow from the rest of the car flew everywhere. “It was like driving behind a snowstorm,” he noted.
"I used my brush to clear the windshield".Driver thought that was enough. It was like driving behind a snowstorm.Clear ALL the snow! #ProjectIgloo #otttraffic pic -

At the social pediatric hub in Vanier, there’s an examining table and other medical accoutrements. There are also boxes of toys and a kitchen table with a bowl of fruit for nibbling.
The hub is a one-stop shop that recognizes it takes more than medical expertise to keep children healthy — not just physically, but also mentally, emotionally and socially.
“When the child goes into the medical system, the system focuses on the medical. We’re looking at the whole child,&rdquo
