A 53-year-old Quebec transport truck driver has been charged with with careless driving after his truck went out of control Thursday and rolled into the median of Highway 401 just past Kingston.
The crash occurred shortly before 9 a.m. when the truck, hauling a double-trailer of commercial lumber, crashed through steel barriers before rolling its side into the steep embankment.

Art lovers will have to take a two-week break from the National Gallery of Canada starting Monday as the institution gets set for a major maintenance project.

The gallery describes the work as “the next phase of an essential part of the life cycle maintenance of the building.”
The gallery will re-open Jan. 23 and will rema -

Labour body sets up hotline to out corporate minimum-wage 'bullies'
Ottawa workers who feel they are being abused by employers reducing benefits or taking other cost-cutting measures in reaction to Ontario’s new minimum age laws now have an outlet.
The Ottawa and District Labour Council has set up a hotline to identify corporate “bullies” that claim the benefits reductions are the only way they can pay the new minimum wage without cutting staff.
Ontario’s minimum rose to $14 an hour Jan. 1, a $2.40-an-hour boost making it the highest mini -

Weather: Temps to hit the lowest of the lows, and snow on the way
And you thought it couldn’t get any worse.
The capital region’s Deep Freeze is expected to hit the lowest of the lows Saturday, with a “high” of only about -20 C.
Add in the winds of 30 kilometres an hour gusting to 50 km/h and you have a walking around “feels like” -40 situation on your hands (and face and ears).
The authorities have maintained their extreme cold warnings and frostbite alerts.
Saturday night is expected to see a low of -28 C, but the wind mig -
Childhood memories loom large in Robert Lepage's 887
EDITOR’s NOTE: This piece originally appeared in the Montreal Gazette in April 2016. After more than 30 years in the business and with a staggering number of productions behind him (including such multi-hour epics as The Dragons’ Trilogy, The Seven Streams of the River Ota and Wagner’s Ring cycle), Robert Lepage is unquestionably a giant of the theatre. So it seems apt that in his latest touring show, he roams among scale models of apartment buildings and cars li -

Jeanne Fuller (1930-2017): Philanthropist was the 'heart' behind the Fuller dynasty
When she was 12 years old, Jeanne Fuller would play with her young friend and gaze across Britannia Bay at the sunset.
Seventy-five years later, on Dec. 17 as she lay dying in The Moorings, the Fuller family’s estate adjacent the Britannia Yacht Club, she stared across the same water at another sunset, with her children gathered around her. She was listening to a hymn set to her favourite poem, Tennyson’s Crossing the Bar, a laminated copy of which she carried in her purse.

University of Ottawa Heart Institute's 'Dr. K' is Canada's first Inuk cardiac surgeon
There were no doctors in Donna May Kimmaliardjuk’s family. No nurses, not even a physiotherapist. Still, from the time she was very young, Kimmaliardjuk was determined to become a physician.
Now 28, she is doing a residency in heart surgery.
Kimmaliardjuk — “Dr. K” to patients at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute — is Canada’s first Inuk heart surgeon, recently recognized with an Indspire Award for being a role model for young women and Indigenous youth -
Editorial: Poking holes in doughnuts
People usually act in their self-interest, and are fully entitled to do so. As a result, it should surprise no one that the business sector – in particular small business – is moving to protect its interests as a result of Ontario’s minimum-wage hike.
The results haven’t been pretty. Yet the premier responsible for the wage changes seems astonished that her policies have actual consequences. And so, facing a spring election, Kathleen Wynne this week picked a rhetorical fi -

Napanee wildlife rescue centre appeals for help after fire destroys barn
A Napanee wildlife rescue centre suffered “a devastating blow” Friday when fire destroyed a barn that held much of the straw and hay the centre needs for feed and bedding for its animals.
The fire at Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre broke out at about 11 a.m. and destroyed a barn on the property, about five kilometres west of Napanee. Only a few animals were in the barn and all but one pig and a rabbit were able to escape safely. The fire was extinguished at around 4 p.m. with the help of -

Sewer construction to block off parts of Confederation Park, surrounding streets
The construction of new sewage infrastructure in Confederation Park will cause temporary closures of adjacent traffic lanes and a portion of the park, starting in March.
