Employers are taking steps to control labour costs after the minimum wage rose to $14 an hour on Jan. 1. But they are also learning that sticking to the bottom line can have negative effects on business.
The owners of at least a dozen Tim Hortons outlets have told workers they are rescinding perks and paid breaks, news that quickly went viral. The action is “nothing short of bullying behaviour,” said Labour Minister Kevin Flynn on Friday.
“These franchise owners are trying to m

Egan: Righting wreckage on Hwy. 401 — unsung towing crews hit prime-time
When things go horribly wrong with big trucks on Ontario’s 400-highways, people die, things burn, traffic locks in angry grids and a mountain of wreckage is left behind.
And people like Andrew Vink go to work. “A lot of times, when the weather turns bad, and people stop and get off the road, that’s often the time we’re going out.”
Vink is operations manager for Herb’s Towing, one of the biggest outfits along Highway 401 from Cornwall to the Quebec border -

Leeds OPP to patrol trails for drunk snowmobilers
Snowmobile operators in Leeds county south of Ottawa will soon face increased scrutiny from police to ensure they are following the rules, the Leeds OPP detachment says.
Snowmobiles are subject to many of the same rules as other vehicles, the OPP said in a release.
In particular, police will be checking throughout the winter to make sure operators are under the legal blood-alcohol limit.
Riders found to be in the blood-alcohol “warn range” level between the 0.05 and 0.08 (the same fo -
New affordable housing projects pegged for Centretown, Montreal Road
About 200 new affordable and supportive housing units will be built in Ottawa over the coming years, thanks to the latest cash injection from upper-tier governments.
Of the three projects that received the green light last month as part of the Action Ottawa program, the largest is slated for Centretown, where an eight-storey, 148-unit mixed-income building will be constructed by Ottawa Community Housing at 811 Gladstone Ave., between Booth and Rochester streets.
The project secured $11 million i -
Predatory journal has firm grip on universities in Ottawa and Canada
Scientists from the University of Ottawa, The Ottawa Hospital and other top-tier institutions across Canada keep publishing their results in fake science journals, tainting the work despite years of warnings.
One veteran science publisher warns all the work that produced these studies “is just thrown away.”
Until recently, the scope of the problem of “predatory” journals has been hard to measure.
Now, one giant in the fake publishing field, OMICS International of India, h -
2017 In Stories: How local families had to suddenly confront the opioid epidemic
The Best Stories of 2017
Editor’s Note: As we prepare to usher in 2018, it’s important that we here in the newsroom take a moment to consider the year that was. The news cycle has a forward momentum and it’s easy — too easy — to stay focused on the here and now. It’s essential to us as an organization, as part of the community, as individuals, to look back at the moments that moved us, the stories that changed us, and the people that we will never forget. -

True crime story: How murder in the streets led to Ottawa's last execution
Words by Bruce Deachman, Artwork by Robert Cross•
James Shorey, an Ottawa janitor, was on his way home on a cold, October night in 1945, when he saw three young men he felt were up to little good.
One of them was vainly trying the door handle of the Thomas Jewelry store before the group turned from Bank up to Albert Street.
Shorey followed at a discreet distance, watching as they tried the door of another store — the Dominion at the corner of O’Connor — then turned t -
Ottawa-area jobless rate drops to 5.5 per cent
The capital region’s employment market finished 2017 on an unusual note as the goods producers outpaced government and other services in creating jobs.
Overall, the jobless rate for Ottawa-Gatineau dropped to 5.5 per cent in December compared to 5.8 per cent in November, Statistics Canada reported Friday. The change reflected a net increase of 3,300 jobs combined with a net rise of just 1,500 in the size of the labour force, which includes people looking for work. These numbers are adjuste -
Dawson: Ottawa's having the right debate on homelessness
One night this week, there was a homeless person sleeping in the lobby of my apartment building. I sure didn’t report him to anyone – and I hope none of my neighbours were callous enough to do so, either. In the kind of cold we’ve been enduring, shelter’s all that matters.
Luckily, Ottawa didn’t seem to have struggled too much with finding places for homeless people to sleep. At the Ottawa Mission, about 20 extra mats have been set up in the chapel each night. -

Trying it again: U.S wants to better train Afghans to fight Taliban
The top American commander for the Middle East wants a more aggressive Afghan military pressuring Taliban and other insurgents over the normally quieter months of Afghanistan’s winter, and then quickly going on the offensive in the spring, the Associated Press reports.
Gen. Joseph Votel of U.S. Central Command said an influx of new American trainers can help escalate the fight against insurgents. They’ll be operating with Afghan units, closer to the front lines and at greater risk, b -

With each passing holiday season, the true meaning of Christmas is often foregone in favour of greedier pursuits. You complained and the National Capital Commission heard.
After a couple of weeks of public impatience that the record-setting low temperatures weren’t enough to get the world’s largest skating rink in shape, dignitaries gathered at the Fifth Avenue entrance Friday morning to post the green flag on five kilometres of skating between the Bronson rest area and the Pretoria Bridge (Hawthorne Avenue), including Dows Lake.

Spotlight: How Nina Simone changed an 11-year-old's life
Spotlight is a weekly look at some of the people who contribute to the Ottawa area’s thriving arts community. This week we talked with singer-songwriter Gabrielle Giguere, aka Her Harbour. Her latest album, Go Gently Into the Night, was released in 2017.
“I always get a lot of anxiety around performing. I’m always worried if it’s going to be a good show, or if people are going to come, or if it’s relevant. And just the logistics of it if you bring in other musicians -
Mayor Watson, stop turning your back on climate leadership
If Mayor Jim Watson and Ottawa city council had funded their signature light-rail project the way they committed to their “Energy Evolution” transition plan just before the holiday, they’d have made a bold, ambitious decision to retire OC Transpo’s last horse and buggy by 2025. And they would have put off the vote to fund replacement vehicles until the next term of council.
During budget deliberations late last year, Watson and the council majority allotted $500,000 &ndas -
