Rideau Canal Skateway to open five-kilometre stretch Friday
The Rideau Canal Skateway will open its 48th season at 8 a.m. Friday.
The recent cold snap brought with it days of speculation about when the “world’s largest skating rink” would be set to open, with NCC officials pleading with people to remain patient.
Officials ended that speculation Thursday afternoon, announcing a five-kilometre stretch from the Bronson Avenue rest area to Pretoria Bridge — including all of Dow’s Lake — will open at 8 a.m.

'Very crowded': Demand at Ottawa homeless shelters exceeds capacity during cold snap
The lights are dimmed in a boardroom at Shepherds of Good Hope, where about a dozen mattresses are scattered around the room.
It’s 9:30 a.m. on Thursday and five women who slept here the night before are still in bed. Others come and go from the washroom down the hall or head outside for a smoke. The room is so muggy that fans have been brought in to help push the dry air around. An artificial Christmas tree stands watch in the corner.
As many as 20 women have to share this room some night -
New deep freeze warning issued for region by Environment Canada
The reprieve from the deep freeze appears to be a brief one.

After two days of temperatures hovering around -10 C, the mercury will plummet overnight Thursday, with overnight lows expected to reach -20 to -25.
Unlike the recent cold snap, the Arctic blast in the forecast is expecte -

The Best Stories of 2017
Editor’s Note: As we prepare to usher in 2018, it’s important that we here in the newsroom take a moment to consider the year that was. Read your jazz: Swinging books on Fred Hersch, Dave Frishberg, Claude Ranger, the Vanguard Orchestra
If, for you, the next best thing after listening to jazz is reading about jazz, here are five swinging books that came out in 2017.

This extraordinarily candid memoir delves not simply into the artistic development and musical triumphs of the great and supremely lyrical New York pianist, who headlines the TD Ottawa Winter Jazz Fest with his Feb. 10 concert. Wilson: In health care, we can create a digital dialogue between citizens and government
There are two things that bind all Canadians: Hockey – and not knowing where their immunization records are.
In 2011, I was having a conversation in a park with a tech-savvy mother who complained to me about the use of paper records to track immunization status. If she could do her banking on her phone, why couldn’t she have a digital record of her immunization record on her phone?
I presented this idea to a first-year engineering student, who developed an Ontario prototype. This led -
