Boyles vs. World: Twitter account offers puzzling window on family
Their Twitter handle hints at an isolation Joshua and Caitlan Boyle might feel: @BoylesVsWorld.
The account was set up in October, the same month the couple and their three children returned to Canada after being held captive for five years by the Taliban in Afghanistan, but the first post wasn’t made until Nov. 29. Their profile describes the couple as “freelance do-gooders, hostages extraordinaire, lovers of fine cheese.”
The account has 378 followers, many of them journalist -
Anatomy of a rescue
Étienne Langevin-Robertson, a carpenter and part-time firefighter, had been looking forward to a day off Tuesday. The temperature outside his house just east of Wakefield was forecast to dip below -33 pre-dawn. It was a good morning to sleep in.
It was also not to be. Shortly after 7:15, Langevin-Robertson was jolted by a text notification, the same one that reached other members of La Pêche’s fire services team in nearby Wakefield.
Fire had broken out at 140 Chemin Townline, -
2017 in Stories: Anti-abortion protest law to come into effect Feb. 1
A new law restricting protesters from demonstrating outside Ontario’s abortion clinics will come into effect Feb. 1, 2018.
The “safe access zone” legislation, announced by Attorney General Yasir Naqvi in October, will create a 50-metre “bubble” zone around eight abortion clinics in the province — including The Morgentaler Clinic on Bank Street, which says it has faced years of intimidation and harassment from protesters holding graphic anti-abortion signs outs -
Balmy break in cold snap, but here comes the snow, then more cold
Unwind the scarf and unzip the parka for now.
Wednesday is a positively balmy (if snowy) -7 C but it’s back in the deep freeze by late Thursday.
For Wednesday, periods of snow begin in the morning and will add up to two centimetres by evening when the mercury dips to -13 C.

Specialized Russian navy ship searching for wreckage of missing Argentine sub
The Russian Navy’s Yantar ocean survey ship has been conducting a search for the wreckage of the missing Argentine submarine ARA San Juan. The vessel has been involved in the search – in support of Argentina’s navy – for the last month.
ARA San Juan, a German-built diesel-electric sub, left the port of Ushuaia on Nov. 8 on a training mission. It is believed that its 44-member crew died after an explosion on board the sub. Various navies took part in the search for the boa -
Glavin: Iranians have the right to revolution
As the New Year dawned and the downtrodden people of Iran were erupting in raucous exuberance from the streets of Qom and Mashhad and Tehran and Kermanshah like the first flowers of spring, we’re all agreed, then.
The clear consensus is that the people of Iran have every right to free speech, and the right to protest peacefully. Everyone agrees that Iranians are perfectly entitled to assemble in manageable gatherings to complain about the unconscionable price of eggs, butter and flour.

Judge orders new trial for dad accused of breaking infant's bones
An Ottawa father accused of breaking his infant son’s ankles will face a new trial after a judge reversed an earlier decision to toss the charges because the case took too long to reach trial.
In a Dec. 21, 2017 decision, Justice Michelle O’Bonsawin ordered a new trial after ruling the original trial judge, Justice Mitchell Hoffman, made an error in calculating the length of delay in reaching trial.
The names of the accused and his family are shielded by a publication ban to protect -

Ottawa scientists cure aggressive breast cancer in mice with combination therapy
A new Ottawa research study shows that “triple negative” breast cancer — a particularly aggressive form of the disease — can be successfully treated in mice with a combination of immunotherapies that weaponize the immune system in different ways.
The study was published Wednesday in Science Translational Medicine, a journal devoted to research that advances the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease.
It found that the immunotherapies were much more powerful when u -
MacDougall: Good night Twitter, good night Facebook β I'm out
My record with New Year’s resolutions is spotty, as evidenced by my (still) considerable frame and closet of (grossly) underused gym gear. But this year, I need to deliver, because I’m giving up something that’s killing me: social media.
Now, kicking a bad Twitter or Facebook habit is obviously nothing compared to the physical horrors plaguing others in this world: Witness the famine and civil war in Yemen; the hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims hemmed into refugee camps -

2017 In Stories: Untangling how a tiny Ontario town managed to borrow a staggering $49.5 million
Editor’s Note: As we usher in 2018, it’s important that we here in the newsroom take a moment to consider the year that was. The news cycle has a forward momentum and it’s easy — too easy — to stay focused on the here and now. It’s essential to us as an organization, as part of the community, as individuals, to look back at the moments that moved us, the stories that changed us, and the people that we will never forget.
This is the remarkable story -

Third time no charm for chisel-wielding robbery suspect
An 18-year-old man is facing charges in three robberies on the same Barrhaven strip where police say they collared him Tuesday afternoon.
On Dec. 17, a “partially disguised” suspect walked into a gas station on Woodroffe Avenue near Rideaucrest Drive, demanded cash and cigarettes then fled with his booty.
On New Year’s Day, he was back at the same gas station, this time loading a small haul of cigarettes into a duffel bag before fleeing, police say. A sniffer dog was able -

Denley: Here's how 2018 could end Jim Watson's iron grip on council
Maybe, just maybe, this year’s municipal election will finally offer Ottawa voters a choice about how much they want to pay in taxes and how they want that money spent.
In the last two elections, Mayor Jim Watson has been elected without a serious challenge and city councillors have mostly acted like members of the Watson Party.
Watson has not been a bad mayor – far from it – but the group-think on council has prevented any real debate about alternative priorities or approaches -

Wearing an orange jumpsuit, former Afghanistan captive Joshua Boyle made a brief appearance Wednesday morning at an Ottawa court to face charges of sexual assault, forcible confinement and lying to police.
Boyle, 34, identified himself on closed circuit video from the Ottawa jail and stood silently as the case was adjourned until Jan. 8.
Boyle and his family have been catapulted back into the spotlight just months after their release from captivity after the 34-year-old was arrested for a series -
Canada has yet to select specific Australian F-18s β structural wear will be monitored
The process to acquire the 18 used F-18s from Australia has started. Costing information is being exchanged as negotiations work out a final price-tag for the jets. Government officials say because the Canadian Forces has worked closely over the years with Australia, they have a pretty good understanding of the fleet. Key in the selection of the 18 planes will obviously be the amount of structural wear affecting each plane as well as the upgrades that have been done. Here is what a senior govern -

Deep freeze helps, but Rideau Canal Skateway still not ready for prime time
Whither the canal?
It’s the one question on the blue and frozen lips of Ottawans, who feel that enduring a week of record-breaking Arctic weather should at least be rewarded with the opening of the 48th season of the Rideau Canal Skateway.
National Capital Commission spokesman Jean Wolff shares your frustration, but when it comes to ice-making, he says, things aren’t always so simple.
“Every single winter is different. If there’s one constant, it’s that it’s u -

'This is how I rang in 2018': Frozen pipes, sewage backup clog Ottawa Community Housing resident's New Year
A single mother says she was forced out of her Ottawa Community Housing unit during the holidays after frozen pipes caused raw sewage to back up, flooding her kitchen with putrid, dark-coloured water.
Making matters worse, the deep freeze that has gripped the National Capital Region caused the main water pipe to Lucienne Makolo’s east-end townhouse to freeze Friday night, leaving hers and four other units without running water.
Taps were flowing again in three of homes by early the ne -
