As of Friday, the City of Ottawa will be handling all calls about injured stray animals and wildlife — from gimpy squirrels to rabid raccoons to cats injured in traffic.
Ottawa’s director of bylaw services, Roger Chapman, said the city has agreed to use its 311 answering service and animal control officers to transport injured animals to the Ottawa Humane Society or appropriate veterinary clinic.
For decades, these pickups had been performed by the Humane Society. However, after a pr

Cold facts: The ice bridge and the wolves of Lake Superior
Winter is upon us and the cold is here to last, with double-digit negative temperatures forecast for the next week. Is there a bright side to any of this? Not really. But we offer the tiniest of silver linings! To accompany this cold snap, we’re running a short-term daily feature: Cold Facts.
Lake Superior is showing signs of forming an “ice bridge” from the mainland across to Isle Royale, home of one of the world’s oddest group of wolves.

Snowblowers beat the alternative
Re: Shovels over snowblowers, please; Dec. 29.

Mark your calendar: Shows to see in 2018
Time to stop replaying your concert videos and crowd selfies from 2017. A whole new year of live music awaits, and it’s not just Rod Stewart and Nana Mouskouri highlighted on my concert calendar. (Although, if you’re interested, Stewart plays Canadian Tire Centre on March 30, and Mouskouri, who’s 83, appears at the National Arts Centre on May 14).Even as the global recorded-music industry continues to slide, the live-music scene is hanging on, propelled by fans who never seem t -
A look back at a controversial year for Ottawa's restaurant scene
Ottawa’s restaurant scene dished up a lot of stories in 2017. Unfortunately, a few of them were hard to stomach.
Most unpalatable was veteran Ottawa chef Matthew Carmichael’s admission in late October that he had sexually harassed three female co-workers with inappropriate comments while cocaine and alcohol abuse fuelled his behaviour. Carmichael, who has a stake in the highly visible downtown restaurants Riviera, Datsun and two El Camino locations, said that he had entered reha -
Pellerin: A challenge for Canada on inequality
Our series, “Politics for the rest of us,” continues today. It’s an attempt to see if Canadians can find common ground, without resorting to name-calling and insults, between differing views. Today, meet a socialist who wants some blunt talk on inequality:
You don’t need a university degree in rhetoric or experience working in advertising to sell socialism to your fellow Canadians, but it certainly can’t hurt. Chuka Ejeckam, 27, is back to studying full-time at the -
What's behind the 'staying power' of the cold air in Ottawa
Like the holiday guest who won’t go home, cold air has gripped this region since Boxing Day.
Now we have found out why.
“If you look at it since (December) 26, you have had no weather,” says David Phillips, the senior climatologist at Environment Canada. It turns out he means no stormy weather.
“That’s a key in the staying power of this cold air. Because what kicks it out is a storm, a major weather could come through — an Alberta Clipper or a Saskatchewan Sla -

Man faces multiple weapons charges after police seize handgun in traffic stop
Ottawa police say a handgun has been taken off the streets following a traffic stop in the south end early Sunday morning.

Man, 26, charged with arson after Gatineau apartment fire
A young man was due to appear in a Gatineau court Tuesday on charges of arson relating to an apartment fire that broke out late Monday evening.
Residents of a four-storey Gatineau apartment building were driven into the frigid night by a fire just before midnight.
There were 32 residents who evacuated the 16 apartments at 16 rue Tassé, in the Mont-Bleu area. The fire was under control about half an hour later.
The fire was confined to one apartment. Damage is estimated at $85,000.

Cohen: Again, France proves the value of actually building things
MILLAU, France – The Millau Viaduct soars above the creases of the countryside of Languedoc, etched against the gun-metal sky, a singular feat of modern engineering.
Tapered concrete pylons support a latticework of cables. The bridge soars 343 metres high. This road to heaven is paved with style. Designed by Norman Foster, the celebrated British architect, it opened in 2004. A new visitor’s centre mixes film (an “expérience immersif!”) and virtual reality, but merc -
Defence Minister Sajjan committed to Jordanian roadbuilding project without knowing the cost
Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan recently announced that Canada would support the construction and “rehabilitation” of a road along Jordan’s northern border with Syria. The project will contribute to the security and stability of Jordan by allowing the Jordanian Armed Forces to better respond to threats along the border, according to the Department of National Defence.
How much will this cost Canadian taxpayers?
Who knows? DND says it doesn’t.

Wanted man nabbed at theft-in-progress, police say
A man wanted by police on a string of outstanding warrants was arrested as patrol officers responded to a theft-in-progress on Sussex Drive, the break-and-enter unit said Tuesday.
On Thursday, police asked the public to help them track down 40-year-old Casey Leigh Boland, who officers said faced both “numerous” outstanding arrest warrants and had new charges pending.
Boland was arrested around 12:15 a.m. Sunday as officers responded to the call and “encountered this suspect as -
Anti-abortion protest law to come into effect Feb. 1
A new law restricting protesters from demonstrating outside Ontario’s abortion clinics will come into effect Feb. 1, 2018.
The “safe access zone” legislation, announced by Attorney General Yasir Naqvi in October, will create a 50-metre “bubble” zone around eight abortion clinics in the province — including The Morgentaler Clinic on Bank Street, which says it has faced years of intimidation and harassment from protesters holding graphic anti-abortion signs outs -

Crash on slick roads closes Hwy. 7 west of Carleton Place
Looks like the holidays are officially over.
It’s Jan. 2 and #otttraffic is trending on Twitter in Canada with a string of crashes on slick roads including one that closed Highway 7 west of Carleton Place.

Hang in there – after a record-setting cold snap, a single-digit high is on the way by Wednesday.

2017 In Stories: Discovering a decline in the basic athletic skills of our kids
The Best Stories of 2017
Editor’s Note: As we prepare to usher in 2018, it’s important that we here in the newsroom take a moment to consider the year that was. The news cycle has a forward momentum and it’s easy — too easy — to stay focused on the here and now. It’s essential to us as an organization, as part of the community, as individuals, to look back at the moments that moved us, the stories that changed us, and the people that we will never forget. -
Today's letters: Keep pressing for long-term care solutions
Speak out on long-term care
Re: Make Ontario’s election about elder care, Dec. 9.
The Citizen is to be commended for its series of well-balanced articles bringing to light the systemic problems in long-term care in Ontario.
The lack of adequate staffing levels to reflect the more complex care needs of today’s residents and the rising levels of abuse have been ignored for too long. Every reader should follow the advice of your Dec. 9 editorial and make long-term care an election -
Chartier: Long-term care staff face growing challenges
Perhaps there is no better time than now to reflect on the important and often thankless role that the front-line staff in our long-term care homes play, caring for our parents and grandparents when they can no longer care for themselves.
The women and men working in long-term care today are doing an incredible job caring for what is arguably the most clinically complex demographic in our health care system. Ninety per cent of residents in long-term care exhibit some level of cognitive impairmen -
Adult children will soon take on more responsibility for aging parents
Important legislative amendments in the past month will assist adult children with the care of their ailing parents. These are also a harbinger for the increased engagement that society will demand of families in providing direct care for seniors in the years ahead.
Federally, employment insurance (EI) will now provide a family caregiver benefit of up to 15 weeks to care for an adult family member whose life is at risk and who has experienced a significant change in their baseline state of -
A mother's love: Diplomat depletes life savings to free son charged with murder
A Canadian diplomat in a nightmare in Miami spent nearly every cent she had, took out multiple loans and sold her Ottawa house to finance a legal bid to bring her teenage son home after felony murder charges.
Roxanne Dubé’s life changed in March 2015.
It was a crime — and punishment — that shook two cities and thrust Dubé and her family into the spotlight.
Just weeks after her two sons settled into a new life in Miami to join Dubé at her posting as con -

'I don't want you to die, Mummy' or how I finally quit smoking, hopefully for good
Every time I wrote about the ever-more-tragic opioid crisis in 2017, I felt a shameful pang of recognition.
Last month, a 20-year-old woman told me how using drugs made her lead what she called a double life of lying, sneaking around and wilful blindness to the harm she was doing to herself — and to her family.
It was a truth she could no longer deny when she awoke in a hospital bed after an overdose to see their stricken faces.
But, even then, it took her several tries to stop.
There were -
There's no such thing as just one – and other advice from the quit-smoking trenches
When you’re the last smoker in the once-hazy newsroom, it’s time to quit. So I asked colleagues who are veterans of this not smoking thing how they did it.
This March will mark the 10th anniversary of the start of my current and most successful attempt to quit smoking after more than 30 years of almost tireless financial support of Ontario’s tobacco farmers.
I had tried quitting once before, about two years earlier, in an effort that lasted a full year before I prono
