• Small fire contained to basement in downtown hotel

  A small fire in a hotel electrical system was quickly contained to a basement mechanical room early Sunday, fire officials said.
  Fire crews were called to the downtown Capital Hill Hotel at 88 Albert St. at 5:13 a.m. after a 9-1-1 caller reported smoke in the basement.
  Ottawa Fire on scene of a Working Fire at the Capital Hill Hotel & Suites, 88 Albert Street. Fire is out. It was contained to a mechanical room in the basement. Ventilation is complete and guests are returning to their rooms.

  New Year’s Eve revellers may want to ring in 2018 under a warm blanket.
  The cross-Canada cold snap is expected to continue into the new year, with Environment Canada issuing a new extreme cold warning for the City of Ottawa, saying they expect a “multi-day episode of very cold wind chills.”
  The weather service issues warnings when extreme cold or wind chill creates an elevated risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

• Fatal crash claims life of Athens firefighter

  Police identified the victim of a fatal collision in Leeds County as 31-year-old Ryan Healey of Athens Township.
  Healey worked with the Elizabethtown-Kitley Fire Department, according to remembrances posted to social media by his grieving family. He is survived by his wife and three young daughters.
  Leeds County OPP arrived to the scene of a two-vehicle collision on County Road 5, near the village of Athens at 5:50 p.m. Friday.

  An early morning crash sent six people to hospital and closed the Hunt Club bridge to traffic for several hours as police investigated the two-vehicle collision Sunday.
  Police and paramedics arrived to the scene, on Hunt Club Road between Riverside and Prince of Wales Drive at 1:51 a.m. Sunday.
  A 21-year-old man remains in critical condition, while a 23-year-old man and two women, 37 and 51, were taken to hospital in serious but stable condition.
  Two other women, 23 and 43, suffered minor injuri

• Victim of shooting in serious, but stable condition

  An 18-year-old male was in hospital in serious, but stable condition after a shooting at Banff and Ledbury avenues on Saturday night.
  Ottawa Police Service said patrol officers found the victim after arriving on the scene at about 9:45 p.m. Ottawa paramedics said the man had received multiple gunshot wounds to the lower body.
  No suspects had been located as of Saturday evening, a police media release added.
  The release also said the investigation of the shooting was ongoing by the Guns and Gangs

  Adjacent buildings may have suffered a loss of water due to the problem, a news release stated.
