• Icy roads blamed for crashes on Highway 417

  Icy road conditions were blamed Saturday for a series of crashes on Highway 417 that left westbound traffic backed up for kilometres.
  The most serious crash occurred in the westbound lanes near Churchill Avenue shortly after 2 p.m. when a number of cars and trucks were involved in a pileup.
  Responders worked for more than an hour to clear the lanes, backing westbound traffic up as far as Lyon Street.
  Eastbound traffic was also slowed down, due to drivers slowing to look at the wreckage.

  An investigation has been launched to find the cause of an early morning fire in Gatineau that left six people homeless.
  At about 2 a.m., firefighters were called to a five-unit apartment building on De la Baie Street in old Gatineau’s Riverains district.
  Responders found the building’s residents bundled up on the sidewalk.
  Two city buses were called to shelter the victims, as well as allowing firefighters to warm up under the extreme cold.

• One dead in two-car crash in township south of Ottawa

  An investigation continues into a crash Friday that claimed the life of a 31-year-old man from Athens township.
  OPP said the two-car collision occurred at about 6 p.m. on County Road 5, outside of Athens, about 130 kilometres south of Ottawa.
  The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. 
  The driver of the second vehicle suffered minor injuries and was transported to hospital.
  Police did not release the victim’s identity.

  Well, good news!
  You can add snow to the mix as we enter whatever day it is of the Deep Chill of 2017-18.
  The flurries started Saturday morning and, while it’s certainly not blizzard conditions, there’ll be two to four centimetres through the day.

  A teenage pedestrian was taken to Gatineau hospital with a concussion and a broken leg after he was struck by a vehicle Friday night.
  According to Gatineau police, the 15-year-old was a passenger on a bus travelling west on Laverendrye Boulevard West. When he got off the bus at a stop near Gatineau Avenue at about 8 p.m., he darted across Laverendrye, passing in front of the bus instead of walking to the nearest intersection to cross.   Seven Ottawans, including Sir Terry Matthews, were among those appointed to the Order of Canada on Friday, as Gov. Gen. Julie Payette announced 125 new appointments to Canada’s second-highest civilian honour for merit.
  Of the seven, the Honourable Thomas Cromwell was accorded the highest grade: Companion of the Order of Canada. Cromwell sat as a Supreme Court of Canada judge from 2008 to 2016, following more than a decade on the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal.

• Two taken to hospital after fire in Gatineau

  A child and an adult were taken to hospital for treatment of minor smoke inhalation following a Friday afternoon fire at 27 Rousillon St. in Gatineau.
  Twelve fire trucks responded to the call at 3:15, and the fire was deemed under control by 4:23.
  Seven people were displaced by the blaze that caused more than $170,000 in damage, Gatineau fire said in a media release.
