Karaoke for the precariously housed: St. Luke's Table is all about community
It’s just after breakfast in the basement of St. Luke’s Anglican Church.
The tables have been cleared, awaiting lunch. It might be a little early and there’s no alcoholic inducement, but Thursday morning means it’s time for karaoke at St. Luke’s Table.
Go Tell It on the Mountain, My Way, Proud Mary, White Christmas. The songs, performed with maximum enthusiasm and varying levels of expertise, keep rolling from the corner where the karaoke machine is set up.

Reevely: Monday's minimum-wage hike will be a test for Ontario's big parties
Ontario’s minimum wage rises to $14 an hour on Monday, kicking off an experiment that will help us test the major political parties before the election due in June.
It’s a 20 per cent pay increase for most people making bottom-end wages of $11.60 an hour now. The Liberals, whose policy it is, say it’s about fairness, distributing Ontario’s economic bounty a little more evenly. The New Democrats say it’s long overdue; the Progressive Conservatives say the Liberals ar -
Ottawa is more diverse than ever — but not at city hall
As his hometown in Lebanon came under the grip of civil war, George Darouze decided to pack his bags and move to Ottawa in 1990, wanting to give his family a chance for a fresh start.
Darouze began juggling three jobs, working 18 hours a day, seven days a week as a bus boy and as a baker, making muffins and cookies at Billings Bridge. The money he earned in his first year was enough to sponsor his family. Then, for the next 17 years, Darouze worked in the telecommunications industry, negotiating -

2017 In Stories: “I tried to stop the situation and he shot me.”
The Best Stories of 2017
Editor’s note: As we prepare to usher in 2018, it’s important that we here in the newsroom take a moment to consider the year that was. The news cycle has a forward momentum and it’s easy — too easy — to stay focused on the here and now. It’s essential to us as an organization, as part of the community, as individuals, to look back at the moments that moved us, the stories that changed us, and the people that we will never forget. -
15 homicide victims in 2017, three cases remain unsolved
Esmail Sharifi was out of the game.
So when the 36-year-old father was shot while seated in the passenger side of a tow truck in a west-end parking lot in the dead of summer, police were puzzled.
Once shot, just after 9 p.m. on July 31, Sharifi stumbled toward the patio of the Big Rig Kitchen and Brewery on Iris Street, looking for help. He was pronounced dead in hospital. Police certainly knew Sharifi from his days as a cocaine dealer and addict. He had been arrested as part of a sweep cal -

Khan: In an age of self-identifying, where does 'I am Canadian' fit?
Before I moved to Canada, I knew exactly who I was. I was a Pakistani Woman. Simple.
Now, several years later, I am a single, South Asian, Pakistani-Canadian, heterosexual Sunni-Muslim female of Afghan descent; an English speaker, self-employed professional, social activist and blogger. And these are only some of the ways I can choose to identify myself. The list is endless and it’s not necessarily in order.
In a world in which we do not have to remain the same gender we were born with, le -
Ottawa polar bear plungers still left out in the cold
Seven years ago, Michael Milsom found salvation in the icy waters of the Ottawa River.
Recently separated from his wife, a depressed and lonely Milsom was spending New Year’s Day Googling stuff on the internet when he came across a news story of smiling, laughing people at the Sears Great Canadian Chill at Britannia Beach.
“It was the worst time (for me) and here was a group of people doing the polar bear swim for charity, for the kids and CHEO. They looked happy and vibrant and -
Denley: Multiculturalism now defines us. Let's embrace the challenges
Canada’s 150th anniversary year, mercifully drawing to a close, had its share of silliness and self-flagellation, but at least there was serious discussion about some of the big questions. In particular, what defines us? What does it mean to be a Canadian in the 21st century?
Sometimes one gets a clearer perception of one’s own country from abroad and four weeks of travel in Italy, France and Spain late this year gave me plenty of time to reflect on what makes us different.

Thiessen: Multiculturalism doesn't mean there is no Canadian identity
When I was a graduate student a number of years ago, I took a course on multiculturalism. The professor decried Canadian multiculturalism as lacking, referring to it somewhat derisively as “dining-and-dancing multiculturalism.” Her view was that true multiculturalism could not exist unless broader society was willing to accept the more challenging elements of other cultures, instead of just the food and festivals. I thought she was wrong then, and I still do.

CF-18s in storage – here is why they can’t be used as interim fighters
A number of Defence Watch readers have stated that the RCAF has or have had 24 CF-18s in storage. They raised the question why those aircraft aren’t being brought out of storage, upgraded and used as interim fighter jets (instead of proceeding with the purchase of used Australian F-18s)?
So Defence Watch asked the question on their behalf. Here is the response received from Department of National Defence spokeswoman Jessica Lamirande:
Any CF-18s currently in storage have been removed from -

Special investigation team probes police shooting death of man in Outaouais
The internal investigations unit for police in Quebec is investigating the death of a 36-year-old Quebec man allegedly shot to death by police Thursday night after he fired an arrow at them.
The incident occurred in the remote Outaouais community of Danford Lake, about 90 kilometres north of Ottawa.

Elderly woman drugged with chocolates, robbed in her own home
Ottawa police are asking for the public’s help to identify a man in connection with the drugging and robbery of an elderly woman in her home earlier this month.
On Dec. 7, the suspect entered the woman’s house near the intersection of Riverside Drive and Hunt Club Road posing as a prospective home buyer. He then offered chocolates and wine to the victim, according to police. The victim lost consciousness after eating the chocolate and awoke to find money and other valuable -
Cold Facts: Frost quake! — a boom in the night
Winter is upon us and the cold is here to last, with double-digit negative temperatures forecasted for the next week. Is there a bright side to any of this? Not really. But we offer the tiniest of silver linings! To accompany this cold snap, we’re running a short-term daily feature: Cold Facts.
Long spells of deep cold bring frost quakes, or cryoseisms. Here’s how they work:
Water saturates the ground and then deep cold makes it freeze. The water expands as it freezes, and pres -

Simoneau: Meech Lake, with almost no politics
For much of my adult life, Meech Lake seemed to me more political construct than blue water and verdant views. It was the lake of the accord, with its waves of democratic debate and its trippy, lapping idioms such as “amending formula” and “asymmetrical federalism.”
Then, in 2012, I retired. Meech Lake became less national history. I rediscovered it as a lake.
In the summer, I’d paddle Meech Lake in my new red kayak or I’d swim it. One early winter, the lake f -

We hate that some people are better than us, so we resolve to be better than them; we fail to become even minimally better versions of ourselves, much less superior versions of anyone else, so we do it all over again the next year. Or, we die.
Canada is good at many things. Many countries are better at many other things though, and this is annoying. It’s just the sort of irritation that -
