Canada's cat overpopulation 'crisis' is under control — for now
Canadians have gained the upper hand on managing the cat population “crisis,” but their efforts are not happening quickly enough to see the problem disappear entirely, according to a national report released Thursday.
The Cats in Canada Report 2017, produced by the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies, studied data from 2011 to 2017 on “Canada’s cat overpopulation crisis,” and underlined the need for more sterilization campaigns to adequately control cat numbers. -

Scanlan: Cold weather a mere skate in the forest at Lac-des-Loups
Hockey on the Hill may have taken a hit from the deep freeze, but skating through the woods has survived the big chill.
Dave Mayer’s brainstorm of creating a skateway through the forest north of Gatineau Park has proven to be wildly popular with locals and tourists.
In its second year of operation, Mayer’s Lac-des-Loups Patinage en forêt received a holiday week boost from an early cold snap.
The reviews from my family were strong, after a couple of loops around the Lac-des-Loup -
City decides on larger planning advisory committee with more residents, developers
The City of Ottawa will have a 15-member planning advisory committee, significantly expanding the membership from a previous proposal that overwhelmingly favoured city hall’s inner circle.
Politicians will be joined by development experts and regular citizens on the new committee, which is being forced by the province under amendments to the Planning Act.
One noteworthy change from the city’s original proposal: the mayor won’t have a seat at the advisory committee table.

Ottawans: StatCan wants to test your fitness levels (and there's something in it for you)
Get ready to be poked, prodded and pushed, Ottawa.
Statistics Canada wants to get a sense of how fit we are as Canadians, and are going to great lengths – including physical fitness testing and in-depth interviews – to find out.
Starting Jan. 3, a total of 500 area residents will take part in the Canada Health Measures Survey (CHMS) to generate data that will help Health Canada, as well as public health planners and the Heart and Stroke Foundation, with their work.

'Professor Popsicle' shoots down some myths about hypothermia
If you sit in near-freezing water long enough to have mild hypothermia, and repeat this 40 or 50 times in the name of science, people will start calling you Professor Popsicle. We interviewed him for our seasonal series, the Science of Winter.
Meet Gordon Giesbrecht, physiologist and University of Manitoba professor, a guy who knows all your cherished beliefs about the cold and loves to tear them down.

Cold Facts: Great Lakes freeze starts fast this year
Winter is upon us and the cold is here to last, with double-digit negative temperatures forecasted for the next week. Is there a bright side to any of this? Not really. But we offer the tiniest of silver linings! To accompany this cold snap, we’re introducing a new short-term daily feature: Cold Facts.
Ice covered 9.4 per cent of the Great Lakes’ total surface by Wednesday of this week. That’s a fast start to freeze-up, with much more ice than there was on the same date a -
Police seek public's help to locate man wanted on outstanding warrants
Ottawa police are asking for the public’s help to locate a man who is wanted on several outstanding arrest warrants.
Sought is Casey Leigh Boland, 40, of Ottawa. The city police break and enter squad said in a release additional charges are also pending.
Boland is described as being a white male, standing around five feet six inches (168 cm) tall, weighing 120 pounds (54 kg) with a slim build. He is balding with salt-and-pepper hair and brown eyes.

Reevely: Embrace the cold and make Ottawa a 'winter city'
This is a tough sell when the health unit is warning about losing fingers to frostbite, but Ottawa can and should do more to embrace winter rather than resisting it.
We do a lot already. We piled into the Crashed Ice downhill-skating competition last March in such numbers that crowd-control was a problem. We packed the outdoor stands at Lansdowne for a snowy Grey Cup and again a couple of weeks later for a frigid Sens-Habs outdoor hockey game. Last New Year’s Eve, thousands of people stood -

2017 In Stories: How the "total disaster” of the Vimy Ridge ceremony was revealed
Editor’s note: As we prepare to usher in 2018, it’s important that we here in the newsroom take a moment to consider the year that was. The news cycle has a forward momentum and it’s easy — too easy — to stay focused on the here and now. It’s essential to us as an organization, as part of the community, as individuals, to look back at the moments that moved us, the stories that changed us, and the people that we will never forget.

Scanlan: In 2017, concussions and CTE dominated off-field sports talk
A case could be made that 2017 was the Year of the Concussion Discussion.
But the topic will hardly be resolved with the completion of the calendar. Given the scientific breakthroughs on the horizon combined with class-action lawsuits and personal stories related to concussions from sport participants, 2018 could make a bigger splash.
At the first annual Grey Cup Player’s Health Summit in Ottawa in late November, Queen’s University neurologist Dr. D.J. Cook was asked about new therap -

Finding the balance between sport safety and sedentary behaviour
Safety in sport has become a growing concern for families and community leaders.
Yet, one prominent Ottawa doctor reminds us not to forget the inherent value of taking part in sport and recreation – as safely as possible.
Dr. Taryn Taylor, team doctor for the Ottawa Redblacks, 67s and Fury, worries that the health concerns of sport participation tend to eclipse the health issues related to sedentary living.
“I hate to hear of enrolment in sport decreasing,” said Taylor, a panel -
Pellerin: Political lessons from a retired teacher
This is part of a series we’ve dubbed “Politics for the rest of us” – an attempt to see if Canadians can find common ground, without rancour, between differing views. Today, meet a retired school teacher who’d really appreciate it if everyone stopped the personal attacks and focused on the content of the arguments instead:
You’d expect a semi-retired teacher to care a lot about education, and indeed Laurel Roberts does, especially the historical kind. She is o -

2017 In Stories: The clash between Ottawa's abortion clinic and its protesters
In April, Ottawa’s only publicly funded abortion clinic was at a breaking point over what it said was years of intimidation and harassment from protesters. Alison Mah’s reporting on the story led to the creation of a provincial “bubble zone” law, which draws 50-metre zones outside abortion clinics where pro-life demonstrators can’t set up.

Strike deadline looms at Irving Shipbuilding
How would a strike at Irving affect the federal government’s shipbuilding strategy? Some 800 unionized employees at Irving Shipbuilding in Halifax, including metal fabricators and electricians, recently voted in favour of strike action when their current contract expires at the end of December, the Canadian Press has reported. The vote was 99 per cent in favour of strike.
A conciliator has been appointed at Irving’s request.

Gormley: State sovereignty includes the right to act foolishly
For the neo-Nazis, the skeptics and the mere idiots of Europe, the good news arrived just in time for Christmas: The European Union has failed to violate the sovereign right of states to act against their own self-interest. Praise be.
In fact, several offerings of this very sort have been made before. On this most recent occasion, glad tidings came in the form of Poland taking yet another merry slide down the hill of elected authoritarianism. The governing party, which since 2015 has adopted abo -

Earthquake shakes area near Maniwaki
A pre-dawn earthquake rumbled through the area north of Maniwaki Thursday, which is part of the same geological neighbourhood as Ottawa and Gatineau.
It had a magnitude of 4.1 (an earlier estimate said 4.2), which is enough for people to feel but unlikely to cause damage to buildings.
The earthquake at 3:51 a.m. was centred 85 kilometres north of Maniwaki, near the Cabonga Reservoir. It was 18 kilometres deep.
ALSO: A major earthquake could hit Ottawa. Are we prepared?
