Staging hockey tournament games outdoors is fraught with risk. Will temperatures be cold enough to make and keep ice in late December?
The 19th annual Bell Capital Cup hockey tournament is experiencing the polar opposite problem – ice too cold and brittle to stand up to the cuts and turns of a hockey player’s skate blade.
An early cold snap is usually a blessing for outdoor rink makers, but on Wednesday the weather turned so cold it forced the rescheduling of all Day 1 Capital Cup ga

Scanlan: Capital Cup games moved as Parliament Hill rink bitten by cold snap
-
It's not just cold, it's #HypoThermageddon2017. And it's here to stay
It’s official. It’s so cold the weather has its own clever hashtag— #HypoThermageddon2017.
That blast of lingering frigid air is a polar vortex, a persistent blanket of cold from the Arctic.
It was so cold that on Wednesday, the 19th annual Bell Capital Cup moved all the games on the Canada 150 rink on Parliament Hill to indoor facilities. The Brampton Canadettes and the Kanata Rangers girls peewee AA made it through the first period before the game was called off be -
Ottawa pedestrian struck by cars and dragged expected to survive, says relative
The Ottawa man who was struck by two cars before being dragged for a kilometre by another vehicle is expected to survive his injuries, a relative says, as police continue to search for the drivers, all of whom fled the scene.
The 52-year-old victim, identified as Victor Carbon, remained unconscious and in serious condition Wednesday at The Ottawa Hospital.
He suffered “severe” road rash and other serious injuries, but they’re not considered life-threatening, said his niece, Ash -
How Ottawans braved the cold in the ByWard Market today
The great Canadian winter is upon Canada’s capital, and in spite of the bitter cold, the resilient spirit of some Ottawans was shining through Wednesday.
We found out how visitors and vendors in the ByWard Market area were managing in -24 C temperatures — cold that shows no sign of relenting in the coming week.

Suspected liquid cocaine in rum bottles nabbed at Ottawa airport
Two people returning to Ottawa from the Dominican Republic were arrested earlier this month when border guards spotted 10 rum bottles containing suspected liquid cocaine in their luggage, police say.
The pair arrived at the MacDonald-Cartier International Airport on Dec. 7. Canada Border Services Agency officers found the one-litre bottles during a secondary inspection, the RCMP said in a press release. A test of the liquid pointed to cocaine as did a detector dog.

Man posing as tutor charged with sexual assault on 17-year-old male
An Ottawa man who offered online tutoring has been charged with aggravated sexual assault and sexual exploitation of 17-year-old male victim.
Police say the accused advertised his tutoring skills online and then arranged a face-to-face meeting with the teenager. The alleged assaults began last summer.
Ziauddin Yousafzai, 25, appeared in court on Dec. 23 on charges of aggravated sexual assault, sexual exploitation, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and criminal harassment.

Frigid temperatures move all Bell Capital Cup games indoors
With a frostbite warning in effect, the Bell Capital Cup moved all of its Wednesday games from Parliament Hill to indoor rinks.
“We spoke with all of the teams involved in games on the Canada 150 Rink for today,” general manager Scott Lawryk said in an email Wednesday morning as the event featuring 32 teams of young players aged nine to 12 from across the country got underway.
“While we didn’t want to take away the once in a lifetime opportunity, safety is obviously a con -

Reevely: NCC's starting to flood the canal, Ottawa's best thing
The National Capital Commission’s crews have begun flooding the Rideau Canal to thicken the ice and smooth it for skating.
We’ve had a couple of crummy skating seasons in a row: the shortest and the second-shortest ever. Maybe this year breaks the pattern, though as always, any speculation on when the first civilians might go out for a twirl is irresponsible.
“It is safety management not to give the date,” says Jean Wolff, the National Capital Commission’s senior sp -

Yes, Ottawa, it's a polar vortex again
You can now officially blame a polar vortex for Ottawa’s frigid temperatures.
But wait, what’s a polar vortex?
Most of Canada has a blanket of cold air that has pushed its way down from the Arctic, where it spends much of the year going around in circles (that’s the “vortex” part) and not bothering us at all.
This air moved south over Christmas. We used to call this a cold spell, mostly. The polar vortex term caught on in 2014 when an especially persistent mass of A -

Glavin: A dismal, dreary year – unless you were Putin, Assad, Xi …
When Islamic State marauders roared across Iraq’s Nineveh Plains in July, 2014, they burned the churches, desecrated shrines, toppled crosses and destroyed ancient manuscripts. About 200,000 Christians fled, and most of them ended up in displaced persons’ camps in Iraqi Kurdistan or in makeshift refugee camps in Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon. In Mosul, St. Paul’s Cathedral remained standing, but it was turned into a jail.

Cohen: Forget the UN – Canada's foreign policy is all about the U.S.
Nikki Haley, the American ambassador to the United Nations, is throwing a party in January. Only those who opposed a resolution condemning her country for recognizing Jerusalem as capital of Israel are invited.
It will be a subdued affair. The invitation list is limited. The guests of honour will be those few nations that opposed the resolution passed by the United Nations on Dec. 21. These include heavyweights such as Togo, the Marshall Islands, Nauru and Palau, Honduras, Guatemala and the Fede -
Dining Out: Citizen restaurant critic Peter Hum's best bites of 2017
In 2017, I scoured from Stittsville to Aylmer to Wakefield to Orléans for delicious, memorable dishes, and I didn’t do too badly at all.
Of course, new, upscale restaurants in Ottawa’s downtown dining districts — places such as Sur-Lie and Oz Kafe in the ByWard Market, Stofa on Wellington Street West and Orto Trattoria in the Glebe — provided thrills.
But further afield, there was also La Maison Conroy in Aylmer, plus a wave of more casual eaterie -

Compass: When regular public high school just doesn't work out
A battle with depression cast a dark cloud over Brittany Potschka’s first high school year, leaving her feeling tired, overwhelmed and isolated. But when she discovered a documentary on alternative education strategies, she realized she was not alone in her struggle, and there are other learning options outside the traditional school system.
Potschka, 17, heard about the screening of the film Class Dismissed after listening to a radio interview with Abby Karos, founder of Ottawa’s Co -
Former columnist Ron Corbett spins old notebook, travels, into crime novel
On a long-ago trip to Algonquin Park during the dead of winter, Ottawa writer Ron Corbett remembers seeing an ice hut flash with light in the darkness of a frozen lake.
The image stuck him. “It was kid of spooky,” he remembers. “Was it a shotgun going off? Or was it just someone trying to light a lamp?”
The scene would plant in Corbett’s mind the seed for a novel, one that begins with an atrocity inside a remote northern cabin.
Although it would take him more than a -
Windchill -40: Gatineau is much, much colder than Ottawa Wednesday morning
It’s cold in Ottawa. But Gatineau is just plain ridiculous.
Gatineau’s weather station reported that the air on the Quebec side of the river was colder than Ottawa’s air by an amazing 8.6 degrees on Wednesday morning.
At 8 a.m. it was -24.1 C in Ottawa and -32.7 C in Gatineau.
Both figures are pure temperature, without including wind chill. With the windchill, in Gatineau it felt like -40.
Each temperature is measured at its city’s airport. Gatineau’s air -

Shaver: Quebec must join other provinces in health-care parity
In 1989, the federal Liberal health critic of the day, David Dingwall, asked: “Why is the federal government letting Quebec get away with this violation when it was so inflexible in the issue of extra-billing?”
Sadly, little progress has been made in resolving this problem in nearly 30 years.
Hospital care is fully portable across Canada, but unlike all other provinces and territories, Quebec has refused to sign a reciprocal agreement for physician services. Quebecers seeking me -

THE JOURNEY BEGINS
The Turcottes found four seats together in the last coach of the Sunday Evening Special, the train they were taking home to Ottawa from their Christmas celebrations in Petawawa.

Pellerin: Following the party line – but only part-way
This is part of a series we’ve dubbed “Politics for the rest of us” – an attempt to see if Canadians can find common ground, without rancour, between differing views. Today, meet a Toronto retail manager who leans both right and left:
Shaun Nickerson is 35 years old, single with no kids. He works as a retail manager for a large chain in the Toronto area. He’s college-educated and makes a reasonable living. That gives him time to think and talk about politics, -
Farber: Sadly, bigotry still flourished in 2017
The year 2017 has been tumultuous.
In many ways, it was more of the same. Recommendations from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to help Indigenous people are still only concepts on paper; poverty and homelessness remain a blight; Israelis and Palestinians have still not found a way to make peace; and war continues to ravage many parts of the world.
But 2017 was also a year like no other in modern times.
Nature exposed us to its literal fire and fury in ways we have never before experience -
Former columnist Ron Corbett mines old notebook, travels, in new novel
On a long-ago trip to Algonquin Park during the dead of winter, Ottawa writer Ron Corbett remembers seeing an ice hut flash with light in the darkness of a frozen lake.
The image stuck him. “It was kid of spooky,” he remembers. “Was it a shotgun going off? Or was it just someone trying to light a lamp?”
The scene would plant in Corbett’s mind the seed for a novel, one that begins with an atrocity inside a remote northern cabin.
Although it would take him more than a -

2017 In Stories: Illegal, taboo and potentially deadly: Understanding the history of abortion in Ottawa
The Best Stories of 2017: A century ago, abortion was on trial in Canada’s capital, but as journalist Megan Gillis discovered, the subject was so taboo, words like ‘abortion’ and ‘baby’ were never mentioned in the newspapers of the time.
Editor’s note: As we prepare to usher in 2018, it’s important that we here in the newsroom take a moment to consider the year that was. The news cycle has a forward momentum and it’s easy — too eas -
