  On a long-ago trip to Algonquin Park during the dead of winter, Ottawa writer Ron Corbett remembers seeing an ice hut flash with light in the darkness of a frozen lake.

  The New York Times carried a story earlier this month, Energy Idea for Mars Yields a Clue for Powering Data Centers, that accidentally challenges a common private-sector saw that government can’t innovate. Not only can it, we would be lost without it.

  The outlook is for cold weather, but the sun will be shining, and it has to be good news for the Rideau Canal skateway. 
  Environment Canada is predicting a cloudy morning with a mix of sun and cloud later on Tuesday.
  Winds will be from the  west 20 kilometres per hour. and a high of minus 13. The wind chill will make it feel like minus 25.

• Pedestrian in critical condition after being hit and dragged three blocks

  Ottawa police collision investigators are trying to reconstruct the events that led to a 52-year-old man being dragged for three blocks down a road on Christmas Eve. 
  The man was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition after being struck and dragged by a vehicle near Baseline and Merivale roads.
  When Ottawa paramedics arrived at the scene, they found the man three blocks east of where he had reportedly been hit on Sunday evening.
