New non-profit to run ByWard, Parkdale markets
The details are in place for a new not-for-profit corporation to take over management of the ByWard Market.
Ottawa Markets will be in charge of the ByWard Market starting Jan. 1, making this the last December holiday season that city hall has direct oversight of the tourist destination.
Council signed off on the final marching orders during its last meeting of 2017, clearing the way for a smooth transition between the planning department and the new Ottawa Markets board, which is chaired by form -
Christmas plans uncertain after fire destroys Nepean church
The fate of Christmas services remains uncertain for a congregation whose church was destroyed in a fire Thursday.
On Friday morning, the Living Waters Christian Assembly thanked Ottawa residents for their “prayers and support” in posts on Facebook and Twitter. The Pentecostal church was planning a carol event on Christmas Eve.
The pastors of the church could not be reached Friday and have not released any further information.
The Nepean church on Slack Rd. burned down Thursday after -

Scanlan: Polowin Avenue is a stroll down memory lane for decorated naval man
Alex Polowin received a pleasant surprise when he tried to pay for some body repair work on his car.
First, you should know that Polowin is 92, a navy man who served in the Second World War, having signed up for duty just before his 17th birthday. His father, an immigrant from Lithuania, couldn’t read or write English so didn’t realize the paper he was signing said that Alex was 18, old enough to serve his country. Outfoxed by his own kid.
So here was the ancient mariner at the body -

The best Canadian jazz albums of 2017
It was almost as if Canadian jazz musicians responded to this year’s sesquicentennial with an even more impressive range of music than usual. Call it true northern jazz, swinging and free.
Whittling down the contenders for this year’s best Canadian jazz recordings was harder than ever, given the quality of music from the jazz scenes in Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal and beyond, and from expats who have relocated to New York for its exceptional creative stimulations. It’s telling -

Born in 1935 in Sharon, Connecticut, Rudd attended Yale University and played there with a student Dixieland band that recorded two albums. However, Rudd by the 1960s was making music with such revolutionary ja -

Capital Voices: 'Everyone pretended to be very congenial'
To mark Canada’s sesquicentennial, the Citizen’s Bruce Deachman met and photographed 150 people in the Ottawa area, encouraging them to tell their stories that, combined, painted an intimate portrait of the region and the people who live, work and play here. This week, he went to the ByWard Market in search of Christmas stories.
“We live here in the Market and we go to church here in the Market, and two Christmases ago I had a newborn baby and a two-year-old, and we decided to -

Dear Santa: Can I please have a doll for myself and one for a little girl whose family can't afford one?
Gisele Allam wants an American Girl doll for Christmas. So it’s not surprising that she and her family chose to buy a large, brown-haired doll for a nameless child who may not have many presents under the tree.
Allam’s carefully-selected doll — “for a little girl, a six-year-old, like me,” she explained solemnly – was among a mountain of more than 500 toys, games, dolls and other gifts donated by students at Mutchmor Public School to the Children’s Aid S -

Gormley: A rational approach to UFOs, aliens and extraterrestrials
There is a distinct possibility that aliens exist. What’s more, they may have made contact.
These two claims have been strongly implied, if not confirmed, by institutions that wouldn’t normally go in for that sort of thing — “that sort of thing” being trippy hallucinations. In 2007, The Pentagon created a program to investigate reports of unidentified flying objects. Last week, the New York Times reported on this effort in a manner sober enough to suggest it conside -
Reevely: Canada's 150th an excuse for a nationwide spray of awards
Politicians have given out hundreds of medals and pins this fall in honour of Canada’s 150th birthday, even though there’s no national program to do it.
So many, in fact, that it’s hard to escape the worry that the politicians are up to something.
The Department of Canadian Heritage gave each member of Parliament 20 pins, made from reclaimed copper from the parliamentary roof, to distribute largely as they see fit. It’s not quite an official honour, but that’s the i -

Jonathan Pitre, mother discussing with doctors possible return home
This Christmas, his second in Minnesota, Jonathan Pitre will enjoy some hard-earned gifts: hope, optimism, healing.
In fact, Pitre and his mother have started to discuss with his doctors the possibility of returning home. If the Russell teenager has no more serious setbacks in the near future — no more infections or high fevers — the family could be home sometime in February.
“I’m very determined to make that happen: I’m excited,” said Pitre, 17, who wil -
Four injured in Shepherds of Good Hope fire
A late-night fire Thursday at the Shepherds of Good Hope on King Edward Avenue saw two people taken to hospital and treated for smoke inhalation, while two others were treated and released on the scene.
The fire, which originated in a mattress on the first floor at 256 King Edward Ave., broke out just before 11 p.m.
A 45-year-old man and a 66-year-old woman were taken to the hospital and treated for non-critical respiratory problems.

Gusty winds will make the high of -11 C feel much colder, so bundle up
People who might have had any lingering worries that we wouldn’t see a white Christmas this year, can pretty much banish those thoughts.
Starting Friday, it looks like there’ll be a little addition to the accumulation every day between now and Boxing Day, and probably beyond.
Nothing stormy, mind you. Just steady.
The forecast for Friday is periods of light snow or flurries throughout the day, with an accumulation of four to six cm.
Gusty winds will make the high of -11 C feel much c -
Valleriani and Roach: We need legal spaces for people to use marijuana
If you’ve been following the plans for cannabis legalization across Canada, one of the key concerns is not just how it will be sold, but where exactly people will be allowed to consume cannabis.
Not in parks, or in the streets, certainly not in restaurants or even in places where there are existing tobacco allowances. In Ontario, the proposed legislation boils down to this: the only place we can consume legal cannabis will be in the privacy of our homes.
While the Ontario government has no -

MacDougall: Stumbling Jagmeet Singh the perfect Christmas present for Trudeau's Liberals
At what point do we begin entertaining the notion of Jagmeet Singh as a Liberal plant?
Christmastime sounds about right; watching the new NDP leader stumble around the end-of-year interview circuit has been the perfect gift for Team Liberal.
Singh was insipid. Over-rehearsed. A platitude wrapped inside a focus group. And when he did stray from his message track, it was to fumble an answer about working with the Conservatives. Ayoye.
The non-MP from Toronto was indeed so poor that Justin Trudeau
