Ottawa police will replace 140 aging Tasers at a cost of more than a quarter-million dollars.
The police board approved the sole-source contract Monday, which would see the force fork over $265,290.20 plus taxes to M. D. Charlton Co. Ltd. As a sole-source contract that’s more than $100,000, the civilian oversight body had to approve the purchase.
The province currently only allows Ontario police services to purchase conducted energy weapons manufactured by Taser International, and only two

Ottawa police take aim at impaired driving during holiday season
Ottawa police say they’re ready for the festive season — and the dangerous driving that could come with it.
This year, they’re watching out for more drivers impaired by drugs.
“That’s a trend that’s been continuing in the past three or four years,” said Const. T.J. Jellinek of the police traffic unit. “We definitely anticipate with (marijuana) legalization coming in that the trend is going to continue to climb.”
And the increase isn’t t -
Police investigate Sunday afternoon shooting
The Ottawa police guns and gangs unit is investigating a shooting that occurred Sunday at 2:45 p.m.
Police say they responded to the Crestway Drive and Prince of Wales Drive area after multiple 911 calls were made about a shooting. Officers found a spent shell casing at the scene. No victims or suspects were located.
Police say a male victim was later found at an Ottawa hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot injury.
The investigation is ongoing.

Reevely: With LeBreton bargaining at critical point, take Melnyk's complaints in stride
Manipulating Ottawans into telling the National Capital Commission to give Eugene Melnyk whatever he wants because we’re terrified of losing the Senators is a ploy.
It’s Trumpian in its sophistication.
That’s the way to interpret Melnyk’s complaining about the scant attendance at his Ottawa Senators’ games and his musing that he might just walk away from the LeBreton deal with the NCC and build a new rink somewhere else. Maybe in Ottawa, maybe some other city.

This won't be another winter with robins
The robins that stayed in Ottawa all last winter have done the sensible thing instead this year.
Ottawa’s annual Christmas Bird Count confirmed it this weekend: While thousands upon thousands of robins survived our winter a year ago, there are almost none here this winter. Birder Bruce Di Labio was out all day Sunday and saw one.
Maybe the robins saw what happened to the black-throated gray warbler, a southwestern bird that flew into Ottawa by mistake this winter. It froze last week.

Editorial: Long-term care report card needed
Few people who have spent time inside a long-term care home would be surprised at the numbers the Citizen revealed this week. Sixty-six cases of reported resident abuse in 2016 at local long-term care homes. Five hundred and sixteen notices of non-compliance with provincial orders in these same facilities. We already know long-term care is both difficult to deliver and under-resourced; the numbers would seem to bolster that conclusion.
But how to put them into real-life context? If you or a rela -
Ottawa Archbishop to kick off multi-faith blood drive
Ottawa Archbishop Terrence Prendergast will kick off the 2nd annual multi-faith blood drive Thursday with a donation of his own.
Ottawa’s Give Together, Live Together drive first came about a year ago, when Jewish, Muslim and Christian communities came together in a united show of support for the Canadian Blood Services’ Boxing Day blood drive, after a number of houses of worship in Ottawa had been vandalized.
This year’s event will take place over five days — Dec. 2 -

Canada's most conservative prime minister? It's not who you think
The following is adapted from a recent speech by Ottawa author Bob Plamondon to the Albany Club. It’s based on Plamondon’s latest book, The Shawinigan Fox: How Jean Chrétien Defied the Elites and Reshaped Canada.
Sir John A. Macdonald, Robert Borden, R.B. Bennett, John Diefenbaker, Brian Mulroney and Stephen Harper were leaders of majority Conservative governments who all left their mark on our country.
But who was the biggest “small-c” conservative prime minister? -
It's a boy for Erik and Melinda Karlsson! Now all they need is a name …
Ottawa Senators captain Erik Karlsson and his wife, Melinda, are having a boy.
Melinda informed the world via Instagram, with a video of her hubby shooting a hockey puck that exploded with blue powder.
That was followed by whooping, hugs and kisses for the happy couple, who announced last month they were expecting a baby. The video was posted Sunday, and by Monday morning 190,000 people had watched it.

Is it time for Canada’s Iraq commitment to wrap up?
The U.S. and Iraq have declared that the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant is defeated.
But coalition forces are still in Iraq and elsewhere.
There is, however, moves to determine how long that will go on for.
Australian forces are to remain in the region until mid-2018, the Australian government says. There are no plans to cut numbers at this point but Australia is now discussing its future plans with coalition allies and Iraq.

Fourth Tenor, Remigio Pereira, on the comeback
If you’re still wondering why singer Remigio Pereira veered from the script during a high-profile performance by his former group, The Tenors, his response is contained in the first new song of his post-Tenors solo career.“I did it for love, I did it for peace,” croons Pereira in a rich, velvety voice brimming with emotion.
