'Shrouded in secrecy:' Parents shocked by abrupt closing of private school
Parents of students at Carp’s Venta Preparatory School say they were shocked and mystified when they got an early morning email from the school principal on Saturday saying the private school would close immediately.
Many are also wondering whether they would get back part of the money they have spent on tuition — $20,500 for a day student.
But calls and emails to school administration have gone unanswered and parents say they are in the dark about why the school closed and what happ -
Vanier protestors resist hibernation, march on city hall in frigid temperatures
Bundled in winter coats, hats, and clutching signs in gloved hands, around 20 Vanier residents marched on city hall Wednesday.
The group endured a -14 C chill as they demonstrated against a proposal to build a Salvation Army homeless shelter in their neighbourhood.
The proposal to allow the shelter’s construction was approved at council by a 16-7 vote on Nov. 22. However, an appeal by local businesses supported by SOS Vanier — the community group that has led the charge against the p -

Sex charges pile up for former Ottawa teacher
Ottawa police on Wednesday laid 11 more charges against a former teacher and coach who’s already accused of several historical sex-related offences from his days working in the public school system.
Police said Donald Greenham, 75, committed the crimes between 1972 and 1981. The new charges are gross indecency, indecent assault on a male and counselling an offence.
There are four male victims who were between 12 and 16 years old at the time of the offences, police said. The alleged crimes -
Reevely: City treasurer finds surprise $10M, potholes get fixed, Watson reminds renegade councillors who's in charge
Ottawa’s potholes will get an extra $10 million worth of fixes next year, Ottawa taxpayers won’t have to pay an extra infrastructure levy to cover the cost, and Mayor Jim Watson got to show a group of eight rebellious city councillors on Wednesday what happens when they cross him.
All thanks to several million dollars the city’s finance department found in city hall’s couch cushions last week, just in time for the final vote on the city government’s 2018 budget.

Unexpected $10M smoothes passage of 2018 city budget
Facing an unprecedented uprising from eight councillors who backed an infrastructure levy intended to raise extra cash to repair crumbling roads, parks and buildings, Mayor Jim Watson pulled a rabbit from a hat at Wednesday’s budget meeting — an extra $10 million thanks to a better-than-expected surplus this year.
Before the debate got underway, city treasurer Marian Simulik informed council the forecast for the 2017 year-end has improved significantly. As a result, she project -

Today's letters: Wage hikes, transit fares and the CBC
Better wages are about fairness
Re: Public sees red over blaming wage hike for demise of Tomato, Dec. 13.
Focusing on a minimum-wage increase as the logic for closing a longstanding, successful, high-end iconic restaurant seems puzzling. Fancy food, fancy surroundings – and staff paid below the poverty line. Seems a bit jarring to me.
A “living minimum wage” is a justice issue. It affects 30 per cent of the province’s population. Income disparities have become colossal in -

City-centred health care hurting Pontiac region residents, report says
Health care in the Pontiac is suffering because bureaucratic decisions made in Gatineau are stifling the flexible, creative style in which rural medicine thrives, says a new report.
The document comes from Santé Outaouais 2020, an advocacy group that criticizes economy measures by Quebec Health Minister Gaétan Barrette.
Too much has been centralized in the name of saving money, the group says.
“Local services have been greatly reduced. In summary, the staff are anxious, frust -

Denley: A slippery mayor confronts a small outburst of democracy
Eels would be envious of the slipperiness of Mayor Jim Watson.
It looked as if the mayor was in for a difficult session at the city budget discussion Wednesday.
Eight city councillors wanted to break Watson’s sacred promise of a two per cent tax limit by imposing a small levy to help fix up the city’s crumbling infrastructure.
The motion was never going to pass, but it was uncomfortable for Watson, who is never happy when others hold an idea that is different from his. Worse, the mot -

Australia expects first used F-18s to be in Canadian hands early 2019
Transfer of the first two used Australian F-18 aircraft to Canada is expected to occur from the first half of 2019, according to Australia’s defence ministery. Next year's Canada Dance Festival suspended due to funding shortfall
The Canada Dance Festival will not happen in Ottawa in 2018 because “a series of grants did not come through,” the festival said in a media release Wednesday.
The event, a spring fixture in Ottawa since 1987, is co-produced by the National Arts Centre. The news release says organizers will “explore alternate funding options” to attempt a return after next year.
“The decision to suspend the 2018 edition was not an easy one,” said Denis Walz, who chairs the fest -

Glavin: Learn from Australia – beware of Chinese influence-peddling
As Australia continues to reel from lurid revelations about the extent of Beijing’s influence-peddling, espionage and propaganda operations in that country, Conservative Sen. Stay off the Rideau Canal ice, NCC warns

Davie warns about government’s lack of action on shipbuilding
Davie Shipbuilding and a number of its Montreal-area suppliers will hold a news conference Thursday to warn about the federal government’s “inaction” on tending shipbuilding contracts and how that will affect jobs.
Spencer Fraser of Davie Shipbuilding will outline the various proposals that the yard has made to the Liberal government (for icebreakers, supply ships, humanitarian response/transport ship, etc) and “present the results these efforts have yielded to date. -
At city budget, a surprise $10M earmarked for infrastructure appears
Facing an unprecedented uprising from eight councillors who backed an infrastructure levy intended to raise extra cash to repair crumbling roads, parks and buildings, Mayor Jim Watson pulled a rabbit out of a hat at Wednesday’s budget meeting — an extra $10 million thanks to a better-than-expected surplus this year.
Before the debate got underway, city treasurer Marian Simulik informed council the forecast for the 2017 year-end has improved significantly and, as a result, she was pro -

Cohen: The defeat of Roy Moore in Alabama is seismic. Here's why
On the first night of Hanukkah, a great light appeared in the southern sky: It was a Democrat, from the State of Alabama, alighting in the United States Senate.
In the hierarchy of biblical wonders, the sweet triumph of Doug Jones will not challenge the miracle of the lamp in the temple (with oil enough for one day, it burned for eight). In politics, though, Jones’s upset comes close.
For a century or so, a segregationist Alabama elected only conservative Democrats, but it switched in 1992 -

Jewish community kicks off Hanukkah, festival of lights
Mayor Jim Watson joined the city’s Jewish leaders on a blustery evening Tuesday to once again light the giant menorah celebrating the start of Hanukkah.
The menorah, the nine-branch candleholder, is at the heart of the “festival of lights.”
According to tradition, the centre candle is lit first, and then used to light an additional candle on each of the eight days. On Tuesday, the first night’s candle was lit by well-known community leader Rabbi Reuven Bulka.

Winter is bad news for birds that forgot to fly south
This week’s cold and snow will likely kill off many of the birds that stayed around for Ottawa’s warm autumn, a leading birder says.
“There are a lot of late lingering birds still around,” said birder Bruce Di Labio. On Monday he photographed a black-throated grey warbler — a little songbird that somehow took a wrong turn from its home in the southwestern United States. It should have flown south, and now it’s too late.
“I was able to get about four feet -

Johnson: City of Ottawa still lags on climate action
The city of Ottawa lags on investment in energy conservation and climate action. When the city’s 2018 budget is finalized this week, the city’s renewable energy strategy, Energy Evolution, is set to again be under-resourced.
