The Liberal government has brought in a new clause – dubbed the Boeing clause – which will be used in the process of selecting winners of military equipment procurements. The clause would assess the “economic harm” a company might have on Canada’s economy because of its policies or trade complaints.

Reevely: Ottawa councillors' infrastructure rebellion seems doomed — but it's a noble failure
Every year, Mayor Jim Watson dares city councillors to find a way to mess with his budget. This year, a record eight councillors are taking him up on it, proposing a small one-time infrastructure levy to fix crumbling roads and maybe replace a pipe or two.
Unless something truly extraordinary happens in Wednesday’s city council meeting, they will fail. Ten councillors are firmly against them, two are openly very skeptical, and 12 votes is the ballgame.
But that eight councillors signed up -
Big Brothers Big Sisters to use GPS tracking to protect capital region bins
A charity that had its clothing bins stolen will be installing security chips in the steel boxes to protect thousands of dollars worth of donations that go to support families over the holidays and throughout the year.
Over the past couple of months, Big Brothers Big Sisters Ottawa and its Outaouais chapter have had around a dozen donation bins stolen. The items inside — typically gently-used garments, household goods and toys — were taken and neither Ottawa nor Gatineau police -
Russell woman forced to raised thousands for melanoma drug that arrived too late to help her
Nine months after she was diagnosed with advanced melanoma, Carolyn Pol is at home just outside Russell, surrounded by family, receiving palliative care.
It is something the deeply religious mother of five says she is at peace with. Still, she wonders if things might have been different.
Pol, 51, and her family had to raise tens of thousands of dollars before she could begin taking an expensive combination of two immunotherapy drugs that her oncologist hoped might extend her life, as it has the -

Are infrastructure funds well spent?
Re: Proposed infrastructure levy on a bumpy road to the budget vote, Dec. 11.

Police clear scene outside south-end home after search for armed robbery suspect
Ottawa police patrol officers and a tactical team cleared the scene outside a home Tuesday in the city’s south end where police believed a robbery suspect armed with a gun had retreated.
The operation began with a mid-morning call to police from a Tim Hortons on Heatherington Road.
A police spokesman confirmed an operation was underway after an investigation led officers to a home on Angela Private near the corner of Heatherington.
“From there, the investigation pursued to this locat -
Venta Prep School closes only months after death of 103-year-old founder
A Carp-area private school founded by a child psychologist who died in August at the age of 103 has closed its doors suddenly and mysteriously.
Venta Preparatory School, located just off March Road on about 20 sprawling hectares, had about 83 day and boarding students. The school was closed effective Monday, said director of studies Shaun Quinn.
Quinn directed questions to the chairman of the school’s board of directors, Hanns Baader, who also confirmed the school was closed. But Baader sa -
Editorial: Crowd control shouldn't be this hard
Ceremonies to mark major events in Canada’s history should be about more than colourful photo ops for political leaders. Apparently, however, they are not.
Canadians learned that in stark fashion on Canada Day, when tens of thousands were trapped in and around the parliamentary precinct trying to get on to Parliament Hill to celebrate the sesquicentennial in patriotic fashion. Instead, they were stuck in long, chaotic lines that led nowhere, or given wrong information about the delays, or -
Where you can eat for free on your birthday in Ottawa
I have a friend — let’s call him Birthday Bob — who likes to eat and loves freebies.
Each year, during the two weeks centred around his birthday, he loosens his belt and plots an itinerary that takes him from one restaurant to another for a series of free (or at least discounted) meals and treats. He asked me this year if I wanted to tag along. I (mostly) declined because I really didn’t think my stomach would be up to it. But I did decide to keep tabs on Birthday B -
Accused Ottawa woman skips out on robbery trial, but gets acquitted anyway
It’s one thing to beat a rap for armed robbery, but quite another to do it when you don’t show up for trial.
On Nov. 30, Ottawa defence lawyer Jason Gilbert won his client a jury acquittal even though she had absconded.
In fact, it’s not clear if Hibo Hassan even knows she was acquitted in absentia, because her lawyer hasn’t been able to reach her. The onetime sex-trade worker showed up for jury selection but absconded before the trial started hearing evidence.

Firefighters turn to 'duck tape' to rescue trapped Goldeneye
The ever-useful duct tape became duck tape Tuesday morning when firefighters used it, along with pike poles and more than a little ingenuity, to free a duck trapped on the ice off Strathcona Park.
A bystander called them at 9:24 a.m. to report that the female Goldeneye duck was stuck on the banks of the Rideau River.
Thank you @OttFire @IncendiesOttawa for freeing this female Goldeneye duck today from the ice. pic.twitter.com/WlvaIGigwW

Burton: Canada-China relations are now ready for a rethink
Besides skewering Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s China strategy, Beijing’s gruff refusal last week to factor labour, gender or environmental rights into free trade talks likely marks Canada’s last gasp in a futile, decades-long effort to engage China in global institutions on Western terms.
In the early 1980s, after “Red China” abandoned its Maoist revolutionary agenda to pursue strength and prosperity through international trade, Canada began transferring hundreds -
Boughner: Today is the most important shovelling day of the year
It’s your old pal Joe the Suburban Dad here with the first “Driveway Shovelling Tips from a Suburban Dad” offering of the season.
So tie on your scarves, lace up your boots and dig out your YakTrax. We’ve got work to do.

Welcome to winter. Expect delays. And more snow. And no street parking
Welcome to winter.
Tuesday morning features snow-covered roads, a hydro outage and school bus cancellations in outlying areas. And yes, schools are open today.
It also marked the season’s first overnight parking ban. Parking is banned on city streets between 1 a.m. to 7 a.m. for all but passholders, to allow for snow removal operations.

Gee: Hospital ERs are the face of a beleaguered – but compassionate – system
Henry David Thoreau asked, “Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other’s eyes for an instant?” Health care is about the privilege of being able to look through someone else’s eyes – or to walk in their shoes. Caring for a patient, no matter what the condition, is about being human, with each other but also with ourselves. It is that humanity on which our entire health-care system, and its compassion that patients depend -

Welcome to winter. Expect delays. And lots more snow
Welcome to winter.
Tuesday morning features snow-covered roads, a hydro outage and school bus cancellations in outlying areas. And yes, schools are open today.
The City of Ottawa’s traffic centre is warning of disruptions in the area of Kars, Manotick, North Gower and Osgoode due to a power outage that Hydro One reports is affecting 5,800 customers. Power wasn’t expected to be restored until well into the morning commute.

Hydropothecary, the medical marijuana producer in Gatineau, has announced an expansion that will make it one of the largest growers in Canada.
The company has bought 78 acres of land next to its 65-acre rural property on the site of a former nursery in Masson-Angers.
It plans to build a one-million-square-foot greenhouse, and has the $80-million funding in place to do so, said a release from the company on Tuesday.
Hydropothecary is already a new greenhouse on its existing property and when the -

The staffers’ newly revealed c -
