The public has spoken, and they're not happy with the Erik Karlsson trade rumour
Public reaction to the Erik Karlsson trade rumour was loud and clear in Ottawa Monday: It’d be devastating for the team’s play, and devastating for the franchise’s future.
On Sunday, it was reported that general manager Pierre Dorion had asked the Ottawa Senators captain and nine other players to each submit a list of 10 teams they don’t want to be dealt to.
Karlsson, who is in his ninth season as a Senator and fourth as captain, will become an unrestricted free -
Travers fellowship winners to report on deadly antibiotic-resistant superbugs
Two Vancouver-based reporters have been awarded the 2018 R. James Travers Foreign Corresponding Fellowship to look into the issue of containing antibiotic-resistant superbugs — a threat that poses a deadly risk to Canadians, the award recipients say.
Aleksandra Sagan and Laura Kane will use their award, worth $25,000, to investigate antimicrobial resistance against the backdrop of a potential worldwide health outbreak. They will detail the work of various countries for The Canadian Press i -

At a loss for words: How an Ottawa firm recovered from losing its key contract
Masha Krupp’s world imploded Sept. 27, 2016.
That was the day the Ottawa entrepreneur learned her 25-year-old firm had lost half its revenues in a heartbeat.
Canada Revenue Agency, for whom Masha Krupp Translation Group had been translating documents for more than a decade, had just informed her their relationship was over. Gone were assignments averaging 14 million words a year, and annual billings that topped $4 million. This lucrative business would now be taken over by CLS Lexi- -
OPP on lookout for suspicious man who approached children with gingerbread house offer
Police are asking the public to be on alert after a man was seen approaching children near a school in Rockland, Ont. and asking if they wanted to accompany him home to see gingerbread houses.
Police received a complaint about a suspicious man seen on Dec. 7 around 2:25 p.m. talking to kids walking home from a school in Rockland, about 40 kilometres east of Ottawa.
One of the children he talked to ran away, and the man did not engage in pursuit.
He is described as between five foot eight and six -
Scanlan: The Senators freefall may go down as the curse of Kyle Turris
Dynasties are anathema to Gary Bettman’s salary-capped NHL, where parity, not prominence, is king.
Fans of the Ottawa Senators are asking these days – could someone please deliver a cup of parity this way?
Senators partisans would kill for a middling run of mediocrity, a flirtation with .500, a memo from on high that would assure them Erik Karlsson ain’t going anywhere, via trade or free agency.
Somehow, despite playing in a league in which analysts love to say, “on any g -

Ferocious young tenors (Adam Larson, Chad Lefkowitz-Brown and Paul Jones CDs reviewed)
Second City (Inner City Music)Adam Larson
Onward (self-released)Chad Lefkowitz-Brown
Clean (self-released)Paul Jones
Tenor saxophonist Adam Larson opens his fourth and latest album, Second City, with something of a rhetorical question — namely, an original piece he calls Who Even is That?
The title refers, Larson says, to the non-stop parade of accomplished jazz players who move to New York each year and keep the scene vital with their talents and creativity. That said, I’m sure -

Three charged in alleged luxury SUV conspiracy worth $745,000
Three men face charges after a year-long probe dubbed Project Tahara that began when local police noticed a string of thefts of luxury Lexis and Toyota SUVs.
The investigation wrapped up with the help of police in York and Montreal, the Canadian border service and the Insurance Bureau of Canada.
The Ottawa Police Service’s organized auto theft section noticed the trend in September 2016, then later that year located video surveillance images of the vehicles being stolen directly from resid -
Reevely: Ontario will run deficits despite the healthy economy, watchdog says
Ontario is facing years of worsening deficits because none of the major parties has a plan to make the province’s spending line up with its income, says the government’s Financial Accountability Office.
“To the extent the government delays making those adjustments today, the adjustments will become more difficult in the future, and you’re shifting it to future generations and to young people,” said David West, the office’s chief economist, releasing the agency -

ERs have become a dumping ground

OPP trading its cruisers for truck tractors during safety blitz
It takes one to spot one.
The OPP is taking an unconventional approach to a trucking safety blitz that launched Monday – officers are conducting patrols in truck tractors to better spot drivers who are distracted behind the wheel.
The strategy is being used for the first time during Operation Safe Trucking, which runs through Friday and aims to reduce the number collisions involving commercial vehicles on OPP-patrolled roads.
The five-day blitz tackles speeding, following too closel -
Why making artificial snow is a very slippery slope
With the ski season rapidly approaching, many resorts across Canada are beginning to prepare to make artificial snow, a process that has become an annual tradition. Although snow-making has been used extensively since the early 1970s, we now see it used more and more because of climate change and declining annual snow cover across the nation. In fact, according to Statistics Canada, the mean annual snow cover in Canada declined by 5.1 per cent from 1972 to 2010.
Unfortunately, the process -
Trump's trip-up over Jerusalem may hurt everybody
In the post-9/11 era, metal detectors are increasingly common, especially in “high-security” areas such as airports or public buildings.
This made it hard for some to understand the Arab World’s outrage after Israel decided to install them at the entrance to Jerusalem’s Temple Mount last July. “You go through them when entering synagogues, churches, even the Holy City of Mecca,” commentators reasoned. It seemed like an issue of security.

'Massive disappointment': One school's hopes flattened by Vimy memorial officials
A letter from one teacher sums up the waste of years of planning and fundraising by students, and also the feeling of being brushed off when the school complained about events at the Vimy memorial. (The names of the teacher, school and school board were deleted.)
The school planned for 2 1/2 years to send a contingent of 100 students and supervisors. The students paid $3,500 each for the trip. They put in a year of weekly night classes, learned about individual soldiers who died, visited Passche -

French-Italian frigate proposal would have headed off job cuts at Irving, consortium says
Just a couple of weeks ago, Irving and federal government officials were raising concerns about layoffs at Irving because of a gap in the construction of ships. That gap was between the end of the Arctic Offshore Patrol Ship program and the start of the construction of the Canadian Surface Combatant.
Irving and the federal government are trying to figure out how to deal with that. Selling AOPS overseas (a long shot) and giving Irving more federal government shipbuilding work are the two main way -

A malfunction at the Hawkesbury water treatment plant has the town and the Eastern Ontario Health Unit warning residents to boil drinking water until further notice.
The warning was issued late Sunday night after an incident of decreased pressure at the plant. Officials in the town about 90 kilometres east of Ottawa say they’re working with the health unit to find the source of the problem and fix it.
Student Transportation of Eastern Ontario reports that Pleasants Corners, VanKleek H -
'Alberta Clipper' set to bring 10-15 cm of snow by Tuesday night
By Tuesday night, the region will be under a blanket of 10 to 15 cm of snow, Environment Canada predicts.
The flakes that comes along with what’s dubbed an Alberta Clipper is expected to hit Eastern Ontario Monday night and taper off Tuesday evening, according to a special weather statement.. Since the forecast is for snow stretching over 24 to 36 hours, it doesn’t reach the level of a snowfall warning, when 15 cm is expected per 12 hours.
But the weather agency warns nonetheless tha -

"SHAME SHAME ON YOU!" Hundreds of Canadians complain to Veterans Affairs about disorganized Vimy Ridge ceremony
“A total disaster.”
“Appalling.”
“A mosh pit and Woodstock combined.”
These were among the withering reviews received by Veterans Canada this year to its hosting of 25,000 Canadians in France for the centennial of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, one of the most famed military battles in this country’s Canadian history.
It was a solemn occasion on April 9, the culmination of years of planning to make the event go smoothly. The ceremony was in the styl -

Taxes, not health, behind beer battle
Re: There is no legal right to smuggle beer, Dec. 8.
Rob Cunningham’s suggestion that the government’s concern about beer purchased in another province is somehow related to health programs or an issue of smuggling is wishful thinking. The so-called “sin taxes” on alcohol, tobacco and the future tax on cannabis are significant sources of revenue for governments and the loss of that income is likely the real concern.

Ontario should revise discriminatory driving policy against refugees
After a harrowing escape from the Syrian city of Aleppo and spending three years as refugees in Jordan, Shyesh al-Turki, his wife, and children completed their long journey to Canada last winter. Although he has found safety in his new home, he is unable to qualify for driving jobs.
Shyesh, 40, speaks wistfully of his work as an experienced truck driver before coming to Canada. He drove for years across Syria delivering crops, animals and equipment, and crisscrossed the region through neighbouri -

Kerr: Does the law apply when an inmate breaks prison rules?
Does the law apply in prison? A recent Federal Court decision confirms the obvious answer: Of course. Yet the fact that this was a question at all speaks to the reality of systemic lawlessness that too often describes our prison system.
The court decision confirmed that an inmate in prison disciplinary court had the right to defend himself by arguing that he only broke a prison rule because of serious pressure from other inmates.
On the evening in question, all of the inmates on this man&
