Unfounded? Six months later, an Ottawa woman says her sex assault case is still in limbo
This past July, this newspaper told the story of a 19-year-old Ottawa woman who went to police to report being sexually assaulted by two men.
She was shocked and disappointed when investigators concluded her case was “unfounded.”
The assault occurred in the early hours of May 21, after the woman agreed to meet a man she connected with through the dating app Tinder in a downtown apartment. The woman said she understood that the meeting would likely lead to sex, but she did not expect -

Operation Come Home's at-risk youths turn out tourtière for the holidays
The network of rooms beneath Centretown United Church is a bit of a maze. But on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday afternoon, if you follow your nose, you’ll find chef Bruce Wood and the youths of Operation Come Home’s FoodWorks program hard at work.
Earlier this week, the long, narrow kitchen equipped with three ranges was filled with the smells of roasting chicken meatballs, cilantro, Asian sauces and spices and more.
Wood, who has cooked at Mariposa Farms and several Ottawa rest -

Two men charged with DUI after Chelsea bumper-trucks episode
It might be classified as a comedy of errors, if it didn’t involve alleged drunk drivers and vehicles flying all over the road.
MRC des Collines police were called to a three-vehicle collision Friday morning at Des Métiers Road on Route 105 in Chelsea.
On arrival, police determined a Toyota Highlander had been headed south on 105 when a Ford pickup went into the northbound lane to pass.
A third southbound truck, a Nissan Rogue, apparently tried to thread between the first -

Neve and Vaugrante: Canada must rise to the human-rights challenges it has been neglecting
On Dec. 10, 1948, governments gathered at the fledgling United Nations and adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Almost seven decades later, the declaration has become the centrepiece of an international human rights system comprised of countless treaties, declarations, councils and experts, all meant to deliver that promise of universal human rights protection around the globe. Yet widespread human rights violations devastate the lives of women, men and young people on every contin -
'It's the never-ending flood': Gatineau evacuees gets eviction reprieve
A Gatineau flood victim told she was losing her emergency home weeks before Christmas has gotten an official reprieve through the end of January from the Quebec government, not only for herself but for dozens of others who could face the same situation.
But even as former Gatineau councillor and unsuccessful mayoral candidate Sylvie Goneau was talking to a reporter Friday morning, she learned of one last bureaucratic hurdle to stay in the Gatineau digs arranged by the Red Cross through next mont -

Dawson: Here's why OC Transpo should worry about Uber
The reasons people don’t use public transit are fairly straightforward, if not easily solvable. It can be inconvenient or slow. And, these days, it’s not always exceptionally economical.
Why would you sit on a cramped bus when you could drive, carpool or hop in an Uber? Research from the U.S.-based Institute for Transportation Studies says “ride-hailing” leads to a six per cent reduction in bus usage, and a three per cent reduction in light-rail usage among American -

Gormley: Why Canada should say Jerusalem decision makes world worse
Whatever one thinks ought to be done with what is traditionally known as “the situation in the Middle East,” most observers agree that, first, it is a bad situation indeed and that, further, one ought not make a bad situation worse.
In a rare and obliging concession to reality, President Donald Trump admits that the situation between Israel and Palestine is bad. However, he departs boldly from the broader mainstream consensus that it is undesirable to worsen situations that are -

One is Tarek Hassan, who began selling Asian buns from his Gongfu Bao food cart beside Confederation Park in 2013. He is preparing to open a restaurant in early 2018 at 365 Bank St. in Centretown, and through his Indiegogo page aims to raise a little more than $20,000. Hassan has raised a bit more than $12,500 by offering supporters advance orders of food, shirts, band -

Drugged in nursing homes: As use of one drug is decreased, others are taking its place
Long-term care homes are still sedating elderly residents, despite warnings the drugs are largely untested and inappropriate for the ways they are being used.
Although long-term care homes have begun reducing high rates of anti-psychotic drugs prescribed to residents with no diagnosis of psychosis after alarms about the practice were raised, other sedatives have been on the rise among the elderly, according to recent research.
Drugs with sedating properties are often prescribed to elderly patien -
Ottawa care home had record of breaking safety rules around transfers
Ottawa’s Extendicare Laurier Manor had a history of breaking safety rules around lifting and moving residents when Samira Papadopoulo fell during a botched transfer from her wheelchair to her bed.
It was September, and the 67-year-old woman, with advanced Alzheimer’s, was not positioned properly in the sling mechanism used to transfer residents who can’t move themselves. She fell forward, striking her head and ending up in hospital with injuries that included a gash, a head inj -

Christmas with a twist: Inspiration from holiday homes tours
Holiday decorating is trending toward the more minimal but, as the recent Homes for the Holidays house tour shows, there are still plenty of ways to add some pop.
Now in its 15th year, the sneak peek into some of Ottawa’s most interesting homes — all decorated for the season by top florists and designers — continues to be a popular draw. More than 1,200 visitors strolled through eight homes last month to get ideas for their own holiday decorating while enjoying homes -

Hagar: In defence of personal support workers
The negative news coverage of personal support workers (PSWs) in long-term care facilities in Ontario in the last few months has left me disappointed and upset.
A picture of rampant elder abuse and lack of care in all long-term care homes has been communicated to the public. Personal support workers as a whole have been crucified and the many issues in Ontario’s long-term care system left unaddressed. The family, the public, the long-term care workers and the residents deserve to have thes -
Crisis in care: The long-term care system is failing our most vulnerable, but the need for the system is only growing
While sitting at his bedside, she watched in alarm as her father began crying out: “Please don’t hurt me. You’re torturing me.”
A staff psychiatrist at the Ottawa long-term care home where the 81-year-old war veteran lived suggested he might be reliving his wartime experiences.
His daughter later learned the truth.
The veteran was one of four men living on a locked Alzheimer’s ward at Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre who were assaulted and manhandled -

MacDougall: In China, Justin Trudeau discovers hard limits of soft power
In the end, China wasn’t moved.
Not by Justin Trudeau’s charisma. Or his encyclopedia of hagiographic press clippings. And certainly not by the prospect of a “progressive” trade deal with Canada.
Instead of launching free trade talks this week, as was widely expected, Trudeau left China with a meek commitment to “exploratory talks to continue on a framework for a Canada-China free trade agreement,” a result that fills a tweet and not much else.

Ottawa sex-shame attack was videotaped, posted on Facebook
One of the darkest moments in Ottawa’s tight-knit Congolese community unfolded on July 3, 2015, when a young woman was viciously degraded by jealous attackers who kidnapped her and later pinned her down and applied hair-removal cream to her vagina, only to broadcast it on Facebook.
Sadly, there were a handful of online videos — viewed around the world — that showed the young, naked woman crying and screaming as she was attacked.
This is the police theory in a case that ha
