Mayor Watson defends proposed 2% tax hike, trades jabs with councillors
Sensing a possible move to stymie his tax promise, Mayor Jim Watson is battling councillors who want even more money from property owners in 2018.
Watson traded jabs with councillors on social media before delivering his annual economic outlook speech to a business crowd at the Shaw Centre.
On Twitter, he zeroed in on Kitchissippi Coun. Jeff Leiper.
After his speech, Watson noted that Leiper, who suggests adding another 0.5 per cent to the 2018 tax increase, ran for council on the idea of keepin -

Bah humbug: Six Big Brothers Big Sisters clothing bins stolen
In the season of giving, a local charity that collects clothing to support youth programs is reeling after six of their donation bins were stolen.
The Big Brothers Big Sisters Ottawa’s purple drop boxes, used to collect gently used clothing and household items, were taken sometime Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.
The organization’s executive director says it’s not the first time the 1,000-pound boxes have been stolen from a charity, and says the thefts of the bin -
Skate like (almost) royalty for free: Five capital outdoor rinks
You, too, can skate like Canada’s vice-regal.
Saturday is opening day at the Rideau Hall rink, which has welcomed skaters since the days of Lord Dufferin nearly a century and a half ago – although today it has all the modern conveniences that come with a refrigerated rink.
Officials at Gov. Gen. Julie Payette’s historic mansion promise a “truly magical experience” skating on a forest-line outdoor rink to the sounds of traditional music.
But there’s a str -

'Precarious' stop as driver doing 40 km/h in 401 fast lane pulled over
A 47-year-old Ottawa woman netted an almost unheard of traffic ticket Wednesday.
She was cited for driving too slow — a snail’s-pace 40 km/h — in the fast lane on Highway 401 in Front of Yonge Township near Brockville.
“Numerous” motorists called in the eastbound vehicle with its high beams on at about 8:10 p.m.
Police officers located the vehicle and made several attempts to get it pulled over safely. On the first go, the driver simply stopped in a live lane. Final -
Canada's Capital Cappies launches a new season of top-drawer performances
For some the number 13 is unlucky, but Canada’s Capital Cappies team sees it as something to be proud of as they embark on their 13th season of high school plays and musicals next week.
The local Cappies chapter is excited to continue bringing students the chance to see top-drawer high school performances and write student critic reviews, beginning with two shows opening on Dec. 14: Holy Trinity’s production of Of Mice and Men and Ashbury College’s rendition of Legally Blonde. -

Health minister declares opioid emergency after overdose rates spike over summer
The number of Ontarians taken to hospitals with opioid overdoses surged over the summer, which has pushed Health Minister Eric Hoskins to declare the situation a public-health emergency.
That will let the provincial government approve temporary supervised drug-injection sites without waiting for the federal government to sign off, he said in a Toronto announcement Thursday. The province is also distributing anti-overdose kits to every fire department in the province, since firefighters are often -

The SIU is probing the circumstances behind the death, which occurred around 3 p.m. near the corners of Scotch Bush Road and Sutherland Road between the villages of Douglas and Dacre.

Police raided the Cannabis Culture marijuana dispensary on Bank Street Thursday morning for the third time since it opened nearly a year ago.
But this time they arrived with a bailiff who was enforcing an eviction notice from the landlord.

Five people working inside were released without charges, said Reggie Belanger, who was one of them.

The Nobel Prize: Women aren't getting the credit they deserve
When this year’s Nobel prize-winners gather in Stockholm and Oslo on Dec. 10, not one of the 11 laureates will be a woman.
The 2017 Peace Prize is being awarded to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. A Hiroshima survivor, Setsuko Thurlow (who is now a Canadian), will accept the prize on behalf of the campaign, but she herself is not a laureate.
This is the ninth time this century that the slate of Nobel laureates has included no women. In the 116 years since the No -

Dognapped mastiff kept safe and warm by Kingston Good Samaritan
Pharaoh, the dognapped 40-kilogram mastiff puppy, is safe and sound thanks to a dog-loving Good Samaritan in Kingston.
On Tuesday, three teenaged Kingston girls, including a pair of 13-year-olds, were arrested after allegedly stealing a 40-kilogram bull mastiff type dog, then leaving abandoning it chained to a fence.
Hours later, the dog had not been found, Kingston police reported Wednesday. The city experienced strong winds and rain overnight.

Blood clinic overrides city hall piano tribute on National Day of Remembrance
Elise Letourneau arrived at Ottawa City Hall just before 9 a.m. on Wednesday ready to play her piano tribute for the 14 women murdered at École Polytechnique de Montréal on Dec. 6, 1989.
She was silenced by a blood clinic.
“I was prepared to play. The piano was open and available,” Letourneau said of the public piano that sits in the city hall rotunda.
