Reuters, citing three sources familiar with the matter, reported that an announcement will be made next week.
The Canadian government is not commenting on the report.
In late September, Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan acknowledged that Canada was focused on purchasing surplus Australian F-18s for interim aircraft. “As you kn

The Canada 150 rink offers a chance to skate in the shadow of the Peace Tower with passes available online for opening day Thursday.

War museum acquires historic Passchendaele Victoria Cross
The Canadian War Museum has added another Victoria Cross to its collection, the second time in a week the museum has purchased the honour for bravery in the face of the enemy.
The Victoria Cross was awarded to Cpl. Colin Fraser Barron for his actions on Nov. 6, 1917, during the First World War bloodbath of Passchendaele. Barron’s medals and VC were sold at auction Monday in London, England for 350,000 pounds or nearly $600,000 Cdn.

'The visible and the invisible': Female photographers provide rare glimpses of Middle East at war museum
From the Arabian Nights to the Arab Spring, Westerners see images of the Middle East in our own pop culture, news and art.
But what does the region look like through the lens of local women?
The exhibit She Who Tells a Story includes 85 images taken from the 1990s to today by a dozen female photographers from Iran and the Arab world.
They aim to challenge Western conceptions and illuminate contemporary life and politics.
Organized by the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the exhibit opens at the Ca -
Egan: When a house burned down, a whole street shone bright
Close to midnight on Nov. 9, fire began to smoulder in a ground-floor wall at 14 Gould St., a narrow, steeply pitched-roof house where the Hill family lived for about 30 years.
The house held three people, including six-year-old Noah, a dog named Daisy, cats George and Izzy, and a couple of turtles with the temporary handles of Jack and Frost. It is the only house Rachel Hill, 26, Noah’s mother, has ever lived in and that night, she was steps away in the heated garage, reorganizing storage -
OC Session: Ed Lister’s Prime Rib Big Band
Since last March, trumpeter and bandleader Ed Lister has been beefing up Ottawa’s jazz scene with his Prime Rib Big Band.
The 11-piece band has a standing gig at Irene’s Pub in the Glebe, playing the first Wednesday of every month. Lister’s band has also played two noon-hour concerts at Southminster United Church, plus shows at jazz festivals in Ottawa, Aylmer and Merrickville. Not bad at all given the cost of hiring a big band.
Next up for the Prime Rib Big Band is an appropri -
Civilian panel to begin auditing how Ottawa police handle sexual assault cases
In the next few weeks, a civilian panel will start running quarterly reviews of dozens of Ottawa cases in the hopes of improving the way police investigate sexual assault and domestic violence.
The problem the project is aimed at changing is a long-standing one — many women who come forward with reports of sexual assault feel police don’t believe them.
A large proportion of sexual assault cases are “unfounded,” meaning police have concluded that no crime occurred or -
Jazz is a dynamic, universal language, says Norway-based Mozambican saxman Ivan Mazuze
As keen as many are to call jazz the classical music of America, there are practitioners who push for a broader take, such as the Mozambique-raised, Norway-based saxophonist Ivan Mazuze.
Pursuing an international career that has seen him in recent months tour in Europe, Southern Africa and South America, Mazuze lands in Canada this week. With a Toronto-based rhythm section, he plays the Mercury Lounge in Ottawa Thursday, and then Toronto’s Small World Music Centre on Saturday.

Research team shocked by extent of violence against health workers
Two researchers say they were shaken by what they heard when they talked to health-workers across Ontario about violence on the job.
“We had no idea of the magnitude of the problem or how serious it was. We actually ended up being quite disturbed,” said Margaret Keith, a University of Windsor researcher and co-author of the just-released report on violence against health workers called Assaulted and Unheard.
Keith and her co-authors James Brophy, also a University of Windsor research -

Cohen: In 'fake news' era, New York Times still prevails
There was a time, a quarter-century ago or so, that you could see Canada through foreign eyes. Foreign journalists stationed here offered us a different, illuminating perspective.
The Times of London, the Guardian and other British newspapers once had correspondents or stringers in Canada. So did American newspapers: the Washington Post, the Boston Globe and the New York Times.
The New York Times, in particular, has a long association with our peaceable kingdom; it covered Confederation in 1867. -

Purse Project brings necessities to women in shelters
A community initiative to bring purses filled with sanitary products to women in shelters across the city has returned this season.
Women often arrive at shelters with nothing but the clothes on their backs and spending $5 to $10 a month on tampons and pads is frequently a hardship.
The Purse Project, launched by staff at the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa, involves getting a gently used purse, filling it up with life’s necessities — which can include anything from tampons and toiletries -

Sick jazzman forces Ottawa Jazz Festival to cancel Dec. 12 Charlie Brown Christmas concert
The Ottawa Jazz Festival has been forced to cancel its now-traditional Charlie Brown Christmas concert that was scheduled for Dec. 12.
The concert’s star musician, Halifax drummer Jerry Granelli, has been hospitalized with pneumonia and has had to cancel his touring, the festival’s executive producer Catherine O’Grady posted on Facebook. All ticket holders will be refunded in two to three business days, the festival’s website says.

New Constellations mixes Indigenous and non-Indigenous performers for all-star revues
Jason Collett has one hard-and-fast rule when it comes to the New Constellations tour.
Performers must watch each other perform.
“The artists are not allowed to just hang out backstage,” says the singer-songwriter, in an interview with Postmedia from his home in Toronto. “Typically, whenever we do benefits together, that’s how it goes. Antiques: Painting's auction value sails in uncharted waters
Q. This beautiful oil on canvas is part of our Mom’s estate. She bought it in the 1980s. The artist is Ivan Aivazovsky, 1817-1900, titled “The Sea”, and was apparently painted around 1860.
It has some documentation including a certificate of authenticity – part of which was done by the Artistic Commission of Tretjakov Gallery in Moscow, 1971. It was initially bought directly from the artist and was in one family’s hands for 70 yea -

A free-trade deal with China needs clear, enforceable rules
As Prime Minister Trudeau visits China to discuss the possibility of a future bilateral free trade agreement (FTA), many Canadians are unsettled about closer ties with China. And for good reason. China’s compliance with existing trade agreements has been problematic. China’s widely documented practices of subsidizing exports and dumping exported goods at prices that do not reflect market costs (one of many ongoing reasons to oppose China’s classification as a market economy) al -

Garneau says Royal Canadian Navy doesn’t need a second supply ship. Really?
Politicians and unions in Quebec are turning up the heat on the Liberal government, questioning why Davie shipyards in the province isn’t getting any more work from the federal government. Davie converted a commercial container ship into a supply vessel for the Royal Canadian Navy. It was on time and on budget. The ship, the Asterix, goes into service early next year and under the agreement will be leased to the RCN.
Davie is ready to quickly convert another vessel into a supply ship.

Survey of rooming house tenants finds many scramble to pay rent
A survey of tenants in rooming houses in west-central Ottawa draws a grim picture.

But the survey also concludes that rooming houses play an important but often overlooked role in providing affordable housing for people who might otherwise live on the streets or in homeless shelters. -
