The attack occurred around 3:10 p.m. near the Milano Pizzeria on Baseline, east of Greenbank Road.

Orléans residents hot over 13-storey 'flatiron' building proposed for St. Joseph Boulevard
Residents in an Orléans community are perturbed by a Toronto developer’s plan for a 13-floor “flatiron” building on a triangular chunk of land across from Place d’Orléans — creating a rare tall-building controversy in the eastern suburb.
The Torgan Group, planning this project under the name Orléans Heights Developments, wants to construct the building at 3030 St. Joseph Blvd. in the community of Queenswood Heights, which is considered a gateway -

Reevely: Transit fares must keep rising to pay for LRT, even as ridership slips
Ottawa’s transit fares will increase another 2.5 per cent next year after OC Transpo missed its ridership targets again, because the city needs the money to pay for light rail, transit commission chair Stephen Blais said after the commission approved its 2018 budget.
“Our affordability plan for transit into the long term … over the next 25, 30 years, shows that fares and the transit levy need to go up by two-and-a-half per cent a year,” Blais said. “That’s th -

Tony Harris' year of painting furiously: The Ottawa artist has completed portraits of NHL's 100 greatest
It all started with pencil drawings of Chicago Blackhawks netminder Tony Esposito sketched obsessively on notebooks and page margins.
Tony Harris was then a Grade 3 student at Lakefield District Public School near Peterborough, and like many boys of his era, he found in Esposito an artist’s muse: He made countless attempts at perfecting the goalie’s half-moon mask; the coiled tension of his crouch; the black tape on his Northland stick.
This year, Harris — now a celebrated -

Man, 53, charged in weekend robberies on St. Laurent Boulevard
A 53-year-old man has been charged with robbery after a string of holdups in Ottawa last weekend.
The robberies all took place Saturday night in the 1700 block of St. Laurent Boulevard, near Innes Road. The suspect first went to a gas bar, said he had a gun in his pocket, and demanded cash. He ran away without any money when some other customers arrived.
Police said the suspect then went to a nearby restaurant and again demanded money, but left empty-handed when staff told him to go away.

Ramos: We need a census of robots and AI
The last release of information from the 2016 Census came out last week on mobility and migration, and on Dec. 8 Statistics Canada will close its public consultation for the next census in 2021. As that date approaches, the agency should be encouraged to rethink Canada’s demographic mix by considering how robots and artificial intelligence (AI) will be a part of it.
By now, most Canadians have seen estimates of up to 42 per cent of jobs being taken by robots or AI. If those projections are -

The suspect allegedly fled the scene with a wallet. A short time later, a transaction occurred at a store in the ByWard Market area, using a -

Toddlers taken into care, seven arrested in street drug sweep
Seven people have been charged in a two-month sting of street-level drug selling in the ByWard Market and Lowertown, with police calling it a “first wave” of arrests.
They’re among a total of 21 people involved in selling drugs who have been identified by the street-crime unit in Project Mitigate, police said Monday. Investigators believe they were selling crack, amphetamines and opioids but say the analysis of many of the seized drugs is still pending.

Operation Red Nose skips Ottawa again
Operation Red Nose, a volunteer-run service that helps people pilot their vehicles home after a holiday party involving alcohol, will again not be running in Ottawa this season.
The organizers of the service said no Ottawa-based organization stepped forward to coordinate the initiative.
However, Project Red Nose — or Operation Nez Rouge — will be operating in Gatineau this year. Revellers there who will need to return their vehicles to Ottawa can use the service from the Quebec side -

Why hospital ERs are so overcrowded – it's not patients' fault
Recent coverage in the Citizen of negative patient experiences in local hospital emergency departments has prompted me to provide some necessary context.
As an emergency/family physician, I have worked in a number of emergency departments in Canada since completing my internship in 1979. I was the chief of the emergency department at the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital (Perth site) for 28 years.
