The sloppy handling of child-care subsidies for low-income families highlighted in a report by the city’s auditor-general had “lots of consequences” for families and child-care providers, the head of a large Ottawa children’s agency says.
Because the eligibility of those who were receiving subsidized care went without review for more than two years, an audit of the city’s children services department found the city may have paid out $1.5 million per year in subsidie

Elderly woman sexually assaulted in the Glebe
The Ottawa police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspicious man after an elderly woman was sexually assaulted in the Powell Avenue and Glendale Avenue area after answering her door.
Investigators say there have been a small number of reports in the area in the past month of a man seeking to gain access by knocking on doors in the evening and night. The man introduced himself as a possible neighbour in an attempt to get the occupant to open the door.

Two new Klimts for National Gallery of Canada
The National Gallery of Canada has just tripled its collection of Gustav Klimt paintings, thanks to a long-term loan from a private collection.
For almost 50 years, Canada’s only Klimt painting on display to the public has been Hope 1 (1903), the famous image of a pregnant nude woman with a mane of fuzzy orange hair. It was acquired by the National Gallery in 1970.Hope I, 1903

Reevely: Warnings about cheap asphalt were everywhere for Ottawa
That we’ve been paying good money for substandard asphalt to fill potholes is bad enough. That we’ve been doing it in spite of warnings from all over Ontario that there’s a plague of bad asphalt is much worse.
City auditor Ken Hughes reported on this situation Thursday, with findings that Kanata South Coun. Allan Hubley, who chairs city council’s audit committee, called “revolting.” He and other councillors are right ticked: It’s re-election time soon an -
Don't panic over strep A, but take precautions: public health
Wash your hands, get a flu shot and don’t panic.
That is the advice from Ottawa Public Health on invasive group A streptococcal infections, which are on the rise in Ottawa and across the country.
The infections, which can cause severe and sometimes deadly illnesses, remain extremely rare, said Dr. Robin Taylor, associate medical officer of health with Ottawa Public Health.
The rates have slowly been increasing across the country over the past decade, said Taylor. In Ontario, there are 7.3 -
Ottawa triple murderer found guilty of trying to kill Second World War veteran
A man already convicted for killing three seniors has been found guilty of attempting to kill a Second World War veteran, foiled only by his victim’s sheer determination to live.
Ian Bush, 61, was found guilty on Friday at the Ottawa courthouse of attempted murder for the December 2014 attack on 101-year-old Second World War veteran Ernest Côté.
The guilty verdict comes six months after his May convictions for the horrific 2007 killings of retired tax judge Alban Ga -

Police investigate after 16-year-old girl sexually assaulted in Orléans
Ottawa police are investigating a sexual assault that took place Tuesday evening in Orléans.
The incident occurred near Tenth Line Road and Sweetvalley Drive at about 8:30 p.m., when a 16-year-old girl who was walking south on Tenth Line from Innes Road was approached by a 20-year-old man, police said. They said the pair were engaged in conversation when the man suddenly pulled her across the street and into a construction site where the assault took place.

Arson unit investigates as Carlington pot shop goes up in smoke
A Carlington pot shop won’t reopen after a fire now being probed by arson investigators, says a city councillor who’s long been opposed to the illicit enterprise.
The owners of Ottawa Cannabis Dispensary did not respond to an interview request but Coun. Riley Brockington said that they told him Friday that the Laperriere Avenue shop had closed before it was gutted by an early morning fire and they are no longer in the business.

Coroner criticizes Gatineau Hospital, staff in 'avoidable' death of Cantley man
A man died in Gatineau Hospital after a series of events where nurses didn’t check his vital signs, staff didn’t share information with each other, and nobody told the personal attendant watching him what a heart attack looks like, a coroner has ruled.
In her ruling, Coroner Pascale Boulay said the death was “avoidable” and called for the provincial colleges representing doctors and nurses to examine the level of professionalism of the hospital’s staff in dealing wi -
Patient with broken arm drove himself to another hospital after facing lack of compassion at Civic ER
An Ottawa man had such a distasteful experience in the Civic hospital emergency room that he drove himself to another hospital with a broken arm, an event that occurred one month before another man was shown a similar lack of compassion at the Civic.
A hospital official later apologized to the man who broke his arm and said it had taken corrective action, but he now doubts that after reading about the similar incident last week.
That incident involved a 19-year-old man with an injured back -
Editorial: City of Ottawa must fix child care program quickly
If government has a useful role beyond ensuring collective safety and a robust legal system, that role is surely to help the most vulnerable: the elderly, the sick, the homeless, the children. In none of these areas does it do a particularly stellar job.
Long-term care is a mess. Hospital ERs are overrun. Homelessness is still high. And the children? According to the findings of the city of Ottawa’s auditor general, that’s not going so well either.

Theatre review: Blind Date turns audience member into a star for a night
Blind DateGreat Canadian Theatre Company, until Dec. 17Reviewed Thursday night
Fortunately, Thomas was not a jerk.
Better still, the Ottawa 30-something, a public servant who helps answer mail sent to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, proved to be an easy-going raconteur and very quick study at comedy when he took to the stage for the entirety of Thursday’s performance of Blind Date at the Great Canadian Theatre Company.

Gatineau transit seeks 1.9% fare hike in 2018
For the second year in a row, riders on Gatineau’s Société de transport de l’Outaouais will ring in the New Year with a fare hike.
As of Jan. 1, an adult monthly pass will cost $97 (up from $95), while a single-fare ticket will be up a dime to $3.85.
The 1.9 per cent increase reflects rising operating costs, says the STO’s new president, Point Gatineau Coun. Myriam Nadeau.
It also follows a year of labour disruption, including rotating one-day strikes, t -
White Christmas, followed by mild winter, says Environment Canada
Ottawa has an excellent chance of a white Christmas, probably followed by a winter on the mild side, Environment Canada says.
“I think it’s going to be a simple (prediction) in terms of a white Christmas. It looks like that is almost in the bag,” said David Phillips, the department’s senior climatologist.
He sees a wave of cold weather over most of Canada starting in mid-December. That means that any snow we get is likely to stay on the ground, he said.

Gormley: Theresa May is right to publicly feud with Donald Trump
No love is so great, no union so strong, no relationship, indeed, so special, that it will not be tested, and what better test than for a man to deliberately antagonize a woman by promoting online propaganda originating from her virulently racist political opponents?
Like most relationships between two special someones, the “special relationship” between the United States and the United Kingdom began long ago with the happy accident of discovering a few things in common.

Victim charged after gunfire near Rochester Street park wounds one
Police have charged the 22-year-old victim of a shooting incident Thursday afternoon at the north end of Rochester Street, steps from a popular playground.
Friday morning, police said they had charged Mohamed Ribih of Ottawa with a number of gun charges including pointing a firearm and discharge of a firearm reckless to the life or safety of another person.
