The federal transportation agency says Air Transat failed the 590 hapless passengers who were confined inside two planes that sat more than four hours on a hot tarmac in Ottawa.
Following a report issued Tuesday, the Canadian Transportation Agency fined the Montreal airline $295,000 for not living up to its contractual obligations to passengers during last summer’s travel nightmare.
That contract, known as a “tariff agreement,” gives passengers the right to deplane after

Man taken to hospital with gunshot wound after shooting on Rochester Street
A man is being treated in hospital for a gunshot wound after numerous rounds were reportedly fired at the north end of Rochester Street on Thursday afternoon.
Ottawa police were called to the area, near the corner of Primrose Avenue, at about 2:40 p.m. The man’s injuries are serious but not life-threatening. They were called to the scene after neighbours heard shots in the 1-100 block of Rochester.
A vehicle was also damaged in the gunfire. Police continue to investigate. -
Canadian military personnel no longer have to pay income tax when deployed on international operations
Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Jon Vance has outlined changes that have been brought in for income tax and the Canadian Forces. What this means in practical terms, he pointed out, is that soon military personnel will no longer have to pay income tax while deployed on named international operations.

Canadians’ spending at “Black Friday” shopping events seems to have peaked, according to new spending data.
Moneris, Canada’s largest processor of electronic payments, reports that year over year, shopping on Black Friday 2017 saw a slight 4.5 per cent increase in spending over Black Friday 2016.

Children who were entitled to child-care subsidies did not receive them because the city department overseeing the program didn’t make sure the people who were already receiving subsidies still qualified and, ultimately, ran out of money.

Store clerk sent to hospital after robbers blast him with bear spray
A convenience store clerk was taken to hospital Wednesday night after robbers sprayed him with a substance like bear repellent so they could grab cash and smokes.
It happened at about 10:20 p.m. at a store on Montreal Road near St. Laurent Boulevard.
Two men, both disguised, walked into the store and immediately sprayed and incapacitated the clerk.
They grabbed the items and fled.

City AG questions quality of asphalt used for pothole repairs
The city could be buying loads of crummy asphalt, based on the results of an investigation by the auditor general.
In fact, the city wasn’t even testing asphalt for its small road projects outside the winter months to make sure the material was adequate, the audit revealed.

British Army criticized for recruiting boy soldiers
There is controversy over a British Army recruiting drive that is aimed at enticing 16 and 17 year old youths to join the regular force.

Four members of a Leeds and the Thousand Islands Township family, a teenager from nearby Rideau Lakes and a man from Ottawa have all been charged after the OPP seized drugs, paraphernalia and cash in a raid earlier this month.

Shot beagle Sadie Mae loses eye, but is recuperating well
A beagle that suffered a gunshot wound to the head and left on a trail in Carp is doing well despite losing its eye during surgery.
The dog, affectionately named Sadie Mae by the Ottawa Humane Society, was discovered wandering on a trail on Nov. 11 by passersby driving on an ATV behind Hidden Lake.

Teenager killed in single-vehicle crash near Bancroft
Bancroft OPP is warning of road closures Thursday as they investigate a single-vehicle collision that killed an 18-year-old motorist when his pick-up truck went off Highway 62 and smashed into a rock cut.
James Keller of Tudor Cashel Township was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in Limerick Township.
Police said they were called to the scene at about 6:32 a.m. by paramedics.
Highway 62 is closed between Old Hastings Road and Highway 620 until further notice, OPP said.

Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan will be on hand for the official opening of the new Tactical Armoured Patrol Vehicle (TAPV) facility at 4 Canadian Division Support Base Petawawa on Friday. Stolen guns, fentanyl seized in Pembroke raid
A Pembroke man is to appear in court Dec. 4 facing 21 criminal charges after a police raid turned up guns stolen in a burglary last month and fentanyl.
The Upper Ottawa Valley OPP conducted a search warrant at a home on Reynolds Avenue in Pembroke earlier this month.
They found guns that had been reported stolen from a home in North Algona-Wilberforce Township in October, along with ammunition, a chainsaw and several televisions.

Missing Peterborough teen believed to be in Ottawa
Police in Peterborough are asking the public to help them find a 14-year-old boy who’s been missing for a week.
Balin Gage Scott is believed to be in Ottawa.
He was last seen on Champlain Drive in Peterborough on Nov. 23.
The teenager is five feet seven inches tall with a think build, short blond hair and blue eyes.
When he was last seen, he was wearing beige pants, a blue hooded sweater and a white baseball cap.
