We really are different.
That’s the clear message from the 2016 census, which has been published in stages this year concluding with Wednesday’s assessment of education, labour, commuting patterns and language of work.
To date, we’ve learned that residents in the National Capital Region earn more money, are aging gracefully, and speak English and French more fluently than their compatriots in the rest of the country.
On Wednesday, the census confirmed we are also better educate

Jonathan Pitre out of hospital, feeling better
Jonathan Pitre has been discharged from hospital after another remarkable rebound as his latest tests show that his transplanted bone marrow is producing healthy levels of red blood cells and platelets.
Red blood cells ferry oxygen throughout the body while platelets halt bleeding.
What’s more, an X-ray taken Tuesday revealed no sign of the condition, pneumatosis, that had Pitre’s doctors concerned earlier this month.
Pneumatosis is a rare condition in which air seeps into the -
City hall symposium aimed at engaging black, newcomer communities
June Girvan, an elder in Ottawa’s black community, opened a symposium Wednesday by blowing a special African horn, filling the atrium of Ottawa City Hall with a muffled sound not unlike that of a harmonica.
The Jamaican-Canadian was issuing, she explained to the audience, a call to action — a call for the community to “come together to act in the best interest of the whole.”
It was in that spirit that about 40 people spent the day discussing how members of the black and n -
Reevely: Ottawa wants to hike hotel-room tax, apply it to Airbnb rentals
Tourists visiting Ottawa can expect to pay higher taxes on their hotel rooms in the new year and won’t be able to dodge them by renting places with services like Airbnb.
The provincial government gave Ontario cities more power to impose these taxes this year and city hall’s finance staff are urging city council to take this one up.
If council agrees, a voluntary three-per-cent charge already levied by most hotels in the city is to be replaced with a mandatory four-per-cent tax o -

Stunt drivers call 911 after officers impound their cars on Highway 401
Ontario Provincial Police officers charged two drivers on Sunday after their cars were seen travelling more than 50 km/h over the speed limit along a busy roadway in the Thousand Islands near Gananoque.
Two men from Quebec, aged 20 and 44, were charged with stunt driving on Highway 401. Their cars were towed and impounded for seven days.
After police pulled them over, the two men, upset because their cars were being towed, called 911 from the side of the highway while still in the presence of th -
Pothole claims spike in 2017 as Ottawa roads batter vehicles
More people want money from Ottawa City Hall as compensation for their dinged-up vehicles.
The number of pothole-related vehicle damage claims received by the city has increased by 411 so far in 2017 compared to 2016, according to the city.
The statistics are in a written response published Wednesday as part of a transportation committee agenda. Coun. Diane Deans asked the city solicitor’s office about the claims in light of the harsh winter at the beginning of the year.
The city says it h -
Editorial: Common sense for road safety
Monday’s crash on Highway 401, which killed two people, has raised – again – hard questions about the safety of Ontario’s highways. Less than two weeks earlier, there was a 401 fatality near Kingston. There have been 16 fatal crashes on the eastern Ontario section of the highway since May. This isn’t counting the 30-vehicle pileup near Mallorytown in March that killed one and landed 29 people in hospital for exposure to spilled chemicals.
What’s the solution? -

Police team up with MedicAlert to help 'most vulnerable' when they go missing
Ottawa police say that a new partnership with MedicAlert Foundation Canada will help the “most vulnerable,” from wandering people with dementia to lost children with autism, who’d be assisted by responding officers having access to their personal data and needs.
The charity’s Connect Protect service gives police 24-hour access to a subscriber’s photo, identity, medical condition or special need and past history through their MedicAlert medical IDs. It costs $6 -
City's IT budget, overseen by councillor Chiarelli, not 'fake,' he says
The councillor who accused the city of drafting a “fake budget” says the information technology portion, which he oversees as a council chairman, is a genuine financial forecast for 2018.
Coun. Rick Chiarelli has somehow managed to get more than a two-per-cent increase to the IT department’s proposed budget.
“Our estimates are going to be accurate, so if we’re saying we’re going to do a certain amount of work, we’re going to show the real cost of that,&r -

Today's letters: Strange new 'rules of the road' in Barrhaven
One letter writer observes bizarre behaviour on the roads of Barrhaven, while another says Canada shouldn’t tell Russia what to do.Write to us: [email protected] new rules of the road are in effect
Based on what I am observing of many drivers, I must be unaware that new rules of the road apply in and around Barrhaven. Here are some examples:
1. Stop signs and red lights when turning right at intersections are to be ignored. Treat them as a yield.

Irving wants to sell Arctic patrol ships to other customers but are the vessels too expensive?
Irving Shipbuilding is facing a gap between the building of the Canadian Surface Combatant and the end of the construction of the Arctic Offshore Patrol Ship fleet. That gap in work could mean layoffs at Irving.
Both the federal government and Irving are now trying to figure out how to fill that gap.
Irving Shipbuilding president Kevin McCoy said one way could be to sell AOPS to international customers.
McCoy said there are nations that might to take advantage of a “hot production line&rdq -

Twice burned, Gatineau bridge will rise again
A covered wooden bridge in Gatineau twice built lovingly by volunteers and both times destroyed by arson will be built again in 2018.
The Brabant-Philippe Bridge carried pedestrians and bicycles across the Rivière Blanche in the city’s east end. It’s the only crossing for a kilometre in either direction.
But the site is surrounded by trees and has no lighting, and twice the traditional red bridge has been burned under cover of night, first in 2011 and again, after a full recon -
