Cab fares could be reduced by up to 20 per cent at some points of the day if council agrees to open the bylaw and allow GPS-based meters, a taxi boss says.
West-Way Taxi on Monday was the latest brand under the Coventry Connections dispatching system to receive in-vehicle tablets, according to Coventry chief operating officer Marc André Way.
Capital Taxi and Blue Line Taxi, the other local brands under Coventry dispatching, already have the tablets in their cabs.
The tablets can wor

Woman in critical condition following hit-and-run, police hunting for driver
A hunt is on for the driver of a grey Honda Civic following a hit-and-run Monday in Little Italy that left a woman in her 20s in critical condition.
The incident occurred at 2:23 p.m. at Preston and Pamilla streets, two blocks north of Carling Avenue. The woman was unconscious when paramedics arrived, and remained so en route to The Ottawa Hospital’s Trauma Centre at the Civic campus.
She suffered a life-threatening head injury, police say.
The driver of the vehicle, which was travel -
Garage fire stamped out fast
A garage fire at a home north of Baseline Road near Navaho Drive was stamped out quickly Monday.
Ottawa’s fire department was called to the home at 1813 Gage Cres., where heavy smoke was reportedly coming from an attached garage.
Firefighters confirmed the home’s occupants had evacuated and were able to contain the fire to the garage.
It was declared under control less than 25 minutes after crews arrived on the scene.
No injuries were reported. Damage estimates and cause have not bee -
EGAN: We handed homeless sector to faith groups. Now we cry for control?
Weeks ago, a city councillor coolly made a prediction to me on a hot topic.
The Salvation Army proposal for a social service complex on Montreal Road would easily be approved by Ottawa’s planning committee, then sail through city council.
So far, he’s money. How could he know? Well, the mayor was on board, he said, a couple of leading committee members had signalled their support, planning staff were on-side and there were enough positive aspects to the $50-million plan — espec -
Ottawa info sessions to address refugee sponsorship shortage
In September 2015, when the photo of Syrian refugee Alan Kurdi’s lifeless body galvanized the world, Ottawa resettlement agencies were working with 50 groups that had signed up to sponsor a refugee in Canada.
It took 18 months to match all the groups with an eligible refugee. At times, the online process seemed more like trying to snare Taylor Swift concert tickets tickets than a UN humanitarian effort.
“We literally had to be sitting in front of our computers,” said Don Smith, -
Scanlan: Weep no more for Redblacks, Grey Cup party is here
The time for Redblacks fans crying into their plaid lumberjack shirts is over.
Ottawa’s reputation for throwing a weeklong party, the 105th Grey Cup Game and Festival, is at stake. The festival, a raucous event once better known as the Grand National Drunk, officially begins Tuesday at noon with the arrival of the Grey Cup trophy at Parliament Hill. Consider it one of the few sober events of the week.
By now it’s old news, the reality that the Redblacks won’t get to defend thei -
'He connected with them': At 94, Ottawa engineer leaves behind second career — helping immobilized hospital patients
At 94, William “Bill” F. Dawson has retired. Again.
The first time was about seven years ago. Dawson graduated as a mechanical engineer in 1945. For the next 66 years, he worked in the construction and computer industries. His passion was low-cost housing. He built companies, made and lost fortunes (more about that later), and retired, reluctantly, at 87, the same year he gave up downhill skiing.
“My grandchildren said I didn’t know how to ski slowly,” he says.

Ottawa support worker charged with sexual assault granted bail
An Ottawa-area personal support worker charged with multiple counts of sexual assault and sexual interference was released on bail Monday with strict conditions.
The charges follow an investigation by the Ottawa Police Service’s sexual assault and child abuse unit. Timothy Sample, 55, faces three counts of sexual assault and two counts of sexual interference.
Wearing glasses, a bulky varsity jacket and black hoodie, Sample, who appeared via video link, listened to the long list of conditio -

Last-ditch lobbying ahead of Salvation Army vote
Time is running out for groups lobbying against the Salvation Army’s plan to build a shelter and health complex in Vanier.
The jockeying for votes heated up on Monday with at least one lobbyist for an opposition group and representatives from the Salvation Army having separate meetings with councillors, two days before the council vote.
Even Mayor Jim Watson’s office was touching base with councillors, trying to gauge where the votes will fall.
But unless several councillors ha -

One week in the life of Jonathan Pitre
It was another eventful week in Jonathan Pitre’s relentless fight against epidermolysis bullosa (EB).
The 17-year-old’s week began last Saturday, Remembrance Day, on a hopeful note: He was released from the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital after some promising medical developments. His white blood cell count was rising, and encouragingly, the number of platelets and red blood cells in his system were increasing without medication to stimulate their grow -
Heinbecker: Politics of the Salvation Army plan are deeply fl
Last summer, without any consultation with the people of Vanier, and after more than a year of secret talks with City Hall, the Salvation Army executive cut a deal to move its infamous George Street shelter into the middle of a residential neighbourhood in the heart of Vanier.
To move the shelter, said to be the subject of the top five calls for police service, requires amendments to the city’s official plan and zoning bylaws which otherwise preclude placing a shelter on a Traditional Main -

Ottawa police seek public's assistance to identify bank robber
The Ottawa police are seeking the public’s help to identify a man who is believed to be involved in the robbery of at least six different banks.
Police said the man is believed to have robbed various Ottawa banks between Nov. 6 and Nov. 17. The locations of the banks have been spread throughout a wide area that includes Carling Avenue, Montreal Road, Alta Vista Drive and Innes Road.
In each instance, the man has entered the bank alone and verbally demanded the teller to produce cash. -
Traffic woes continue to concern city councillors in advance of 2018 police budget
City councillors used Monday morning’s finance and audit police board committee meeting to hammer home to the Ottawa police that residents want to see more traffic enforcement by city officers.
While Chief Charles Bordeleau said he hears the complaints of both city politicians and their constituents, there will be no additional money in the 2018 budget earmarked for traffic enforcement.
Councillors and public delegations scrutinized the force’s proposed 2018 budget at the Monda -

Will NATO punish Turkey for buying a Russian air defence system?
NATO is not happy with Turkey because of its decision to purchase a Russian-made missile air defence system.
The talk now is about whether NATO will somehow punish Turkey for its purchase of the S-400 air defence system. NATO is worried its own air defence systems could be compromised or interoperability could be hindered. It has warned Turkey about the ramifications of such a purchase.
Asked about whether NATO will punish Turkey with sanctions, Ambassador Kay Bailey Hutchison, the U.S. ambassad -
Dawson: Government food tourism? How unappetizing!
At the risk of alienating a good chunk of the country, if one were to embark upon a culinary tour of Canada, it could fairly easily end at Quebec City.
Fishy things in the east, poutine in Quebec. Bam! You’re done. Little that’s new or unique, save, maybe, a pit stop at a Montreal bagel shop. Assuming you downed a donair in Halifax, you wouldn’t need to stop in Edmonton for one, en route to Vancouver where there are more oysters.
If you found a butter tart somewhere, some Tiger -

The big ways climate change will impact Ottawa
It’s Canada Day, 2067 — our bicentennial.
In Ottawa, the peach trees have lost their blossoms and young fruit are developing nicely as mockingbirds and blue grosbeaks hop from branch to branch.
The kids are slathered in sunscreen. It’s uncomfortably warm in the city — not very pleasant weather for the Canada 200 ceremony on the Hill — and people are crowding the beaches, despite some early hints of smelly blue-green algae. The catfish are biting nicely. Dad kee -

Capital Builders: Book highlights the people who shaped Ottawa history
Who built 24 Sussex Drive? You may not know that, and neither did I, until just over a year ago, when Citizen editors sat down to plan some of our coverage for Canada 150. Among the ideas that surfaced was a series of profiles of local city-builders. Not the famous people and politicians whose names are familiar and who happened to have lived in Ottawa, but the longtime residents who shaped and contributed to making the city we know today. Within a few weeks, most of our reporters had -
House Works: Winter prep for snowbirds; ice dams

A: Shutting off incoming water supply is a good idea in case of leaks, but I’d keep the heat on at about 10ºC (50ºF) since it’s difficult to drain all the water from inside of appliances such as washing machines, ice makers, water softeners and such.

The OPP is asking the public to help them find a Leeds and Thousand Islands man who was reported missing Nov. 7.

Flurries likely today, OC Transpo reports delays
There’s a risk of a few more flurries Monday morning but just wait and Mother Nature will do any shoveling for you – it will be 1 C by morning on the way to a high of 9 C for Tuesday.
The morning temperature of -8 C probably felt pretty frosty for Barrhaven commuters. The City of Ottawa’s traffic centre was warning them away from Fallowfield Road between Woodroffe Avenue and Holitman Drive because the rail crossing was malfunctioning. OC Transpo had been warning of b -

Today's letters: There are no monuments to Nazis here
No monuments to Nazis in Canada
Re: Canada criticized for ‘Nazi’ monuments, Oct. 26; and Why deny the Ukrainian Nazi connection? Oct. 27.
David Pugliese’s article reported there are monuments to “Nazis” in this country. As evidence, he quoted tweets from the Russian Embassy in Ottawa as well as a National Post story which relied on the same propaganda.
In all of this we see an underhanded effort on the part of the Russian Federation to foment discord withi -
Bissett: Immigration policy is out of control and needs an overhaul
The Trudeau government’s plan to bring in close to one million new immigrants within the next three years should be of serious concern to Canadians. Next year alone, the numbers are expected to reach 310,000 but to that total must be added approximately 900,000 temporary foreign workers and foreign students who will be living in Canada. Since most of the newcomers will be settling in three of our major cities, the pressure on infrastructure and local services will be extreme.

Canadian Folk Music Awards celebrate music, artists old and new
Canadian Folk Music Awards were doled out in Ottawa over the weekend, recognizing the achievements of veteran performers like Fred Penner and Danny Michel alongside lesser-known talents such as Ken Yates, Abigail Lapell and Moscow Apartment.
The awards were handed out over two nights during an event that highlighted live performances by nominees, in addition to revealing 10 winners each night. “Instead of an awards show with music, we decided to go with a concert with some awards,” s -
Spears: Climate-change and politics — a special mix of greenhouse gasses and hot air
It was the fall of 2015 when newly elected Liberals arrived in Paris, enjoying the glow of the spotlight as Canada signed the Paris agreement to fight climate change.
“Climate change will test our intelligence, our compassion and our will. But we are equal to that challenge,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced.
The reality is proving different. Canada has never been equal to this challenge because, despite many promises dating back to the 1980s, our emissions keep rising. Yet th -
An Inconvenient Ottawa? What will climate change actually mean for the nation's capital?
It’s Canada Day, 2067 — our bicentennial.
In Ottawa, the peach trees have lost their blossoms and young fruit are developing nicely as mockingbirds and blue grosbeaks hop from branch to branch.
The kids are slathered in sunscreen. It’s uncomfortably warm in the city — not very pleasant weather for the Canada 200 ceremony on the Hill — and people are crowding the beaches, despite some early hints of smelly blue-green algae. The catfish are biting nicely. Dad kee
