It’ll be “anything goes” on Ottawa’s beloved traditional mainstreets if a new homeless shelter on Montreal Road is approved, councillors heard Wednesday.
It was the planning committee’s second day of public hearings regarding the Salvation Army’s plan to move its George Street shelter to Vanier.
Montreal Road is designated as a traditional mainstreet and that underpins much of the opposition to the current proposal.

Twin Flames bring their warmth to Canadian Folk Music Awards
There’s nothing like a deadline to light Twin Flames’ creative fire.Last spring, the Ottawa-based duo was still on a roll from winning a 2016 Canadian Folk Music Award as the year’s best aboriginal songwriters, and singer-songwriters Chelsey June and Jaaji decided they didn’t want to miss out on another shot at taking home the CFMA hardware.
The problem? They had to have a new record released by mid-June. It was the end of May before they could get into the studio.“ -

Opinion: Trudeau government’s rhetoric on peacekeeping has priority over action
By Walter Dorn
Defence Watch Guest Writer
Despite hosting the largest assembly ever of defence ministers on peacekeeping, the Canadian government is once again letting down the world by continuing to delay contributing its forces to UN peacekeeping.
The day before the conference, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau touted that Canada’s ministerial pledge would provide “maximal positive impact, not just for Canadian contributions but for all peacekeepers.”

Levy’s predecessor Dr. David Salisbury all but stomped off the job after just a couple of years, exasperated by politicians who insisted on putting politics ahead of science. Algonquin Students' Association takes management's side in bitter faculty strike
The Algonquin Students’ Association has broken its neutrality in the bitter faculty strike in order to support college management.
The association has spent $20,000 on TV and radio ads aimed at faculty, urging them to vote “yes” to an offer from the colleges.
Association president Victoria Ventura says she speaks “on behalf of thousands of students” affected by the strike that began Oct. 16.

Ontario exempts municipalities from costly workplace bill provisions
Ontario municipalities will be exempt from some provisions of the province’s controversial workplace standards bill.
Bill 148, more commonly known as the Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act, has been controversial for many of its inclusions, among them an increase in the minimum wage to $15 per hour.
The bill also targets contract, part-time and on-call workers, including volunteer firefighters, contract workers and those on internships, and requires employers to schedule those workers a mini -
At Les Brasseurs du Temps, a mini-festival of jazz will set Hull swinging again
The exuberantly named mini-festival Jazz Jazz Jazz will fill the large private room of Hull craft brewery Les Brasseurs du Temps with different flavours of jazz tonight through Sunday. There will also be a discussion Saturday afternoon of Hull’s golden years of jazz, marked the pre-Beatles days when thousands of people went out nightly to enjoy the biggest names in jazz. Gatineau promoter and bandleader Jean-Pierre Moisan, who has researched the topic, discusses below those glory days -
Jail time for Ottawa chocolatier who sexually assaulted teenage employee
An Ottawa chocolate shop owner who forced himself on a teen employee — kissing, hugging and holding her without consent — will serve four months in jail for his crimes.

The assault occurred in March 2016, while the high-school employee, then 17, was working at Fares’ Wellington West cafe, A -

Lights! Camera! Locomotives! Science and Tech Museum reopens after three-year reconstruction
Something old, something new, even some things that are borrowed. That’s the rebuilt, $80-million Canada Science and Technology Museum for you.
It looks different from way across the parking lot and the lawn beyond — a colourful glow of moving pictures that surround the entrance, telling visitors to buckle up for a new experience.
And yet it will feel familiar, in places. Given three years to re-make everything from the ground up after demolishing the decrepit old building, managemen -

Salvation Army plan a solid contribution to helping the homeless
It is unfortunate that the discussion surrounding the Salvation Army’s proposed community hub in Vanier has become so acrimonious within our city, spawning a debate over which model or approach is the right one. The reality is that issues surrounding some of our city’s most vulnerable are multi-faceted, involving many factors and real people, with complex problems.
Collectively, our many staff members and volunteers work every day and night in order to keep people alive and functioni -

Hard Rock Casino request for more table games okayed by committee
A committee of adjustment panel on Wednesday approved Hard Rock Casino Ottawa’s request to add 14 table games to the maximum number allowed at the Albion Road facility.
The panel took about an hour to make a decision after hearing arguments from Hard Rock’s consultants and a few public delegates.

Poppy fund theft 'bothers me to my core' so Westboro store launches Legion fundraiser
A Westboro business has launched an online fundraiser for the neighbourhood’s Legion branch after a thief allegedly made off with poppy boxes from local businesses – on Remembrance Day, no less.
Great Escape Outfitters posted surveillance images captured Saturday on social media hoping that tipsters would call Ottawa police. Then on Tuesday, manager Greg Boyle created a digital poppy drive for the Branch 480 of the Royal Canadian Legion in Westboro aiming to raise at least $1,000.

There’s room in Rockcliffe for this shelter
Re: Dozens line up to oppose Vanier shelter, Nov. 15.
I’ve been following the debate about the controversial Salvation Army homelessness project in Vanier and I have a suggestion that just might be helpful. Rather than build the 350-bed facility in Vanier, why not build it in Rockcliffe Park? There’s much more room there and plenty of fresh air.
