TORONTO Some evidence exists that could ultimately lead to the conviction of two former senior political aides accused of illegally destroying documents related to an Ontario government decision to cancel two gas plants in 2011, a judge ruled Thursday.

Ace Mercado, restaurant at centre of Mellos closing drama, to shut down Sunday
Ace Mercado, the hip restaurant that found itself in the middle of a drama during the closing of its venerable neighbour Mellos on Dalhousie Street, has announced on Facebook it will permanently close as of Sunday.
In a post, managers of the restaurant, which offers a “modern authentic take on Mexican cuisine,” said there will be a closing party on Saturday night.
“Thanks to everyone who enjoyed coming over the years and best of luck to the new group taking over the space at 12 -
Reevely: Transitions between health providers are painful points for Ontario patients, ombudsman reports
Somewhere in Ontario this past year, a lonely person needed surgery to cure a painful condition. The patient had no support system, nobody to take him or her home afterward and make sure everything was OK for a few hours, as the hospital insisted. The hospital cancelled the surgery.
Yes, we can fix you. But first you’ll have to make some really good friends.
This is the most heartless story detailed in the first report from Ontario’s new health-care ombudsman, former Progressive Cons -

Arrest warrant issued after west-end pharmacy robbery
Ottawa police have issued a warrant for the arrest of a 34-year-old Ottawa man in connection with a pharmacy robbery.
The police service robbery unit has laid charges relating to the theft of cash in a holdup at a pharmacy on Holland Avenue, near Inglewood Place, in August 2015. Police say two suspects entered the pharmacy and issued a note demanding narcotics.
When no narcotics were available, a demand was made for cash, police said. The suspects, in disguise, left the premises with an undisclo -

Accused killer Adam Picard seeks leave to appeal in Supreme Court
Ottawa’s Adam Picard wants the Supreme Court of Canada to hear his appeal of a ruling that would see him stand trial for murder more than five years after his arrest.
Defence lawyer Lawrence Greenspon will be asking the country’s highest court to reverse the Ontario Court of Appeal’s decision to reinstate murder charges against Picard, a former soldier accused of killing Barrhaven construction worker Fouad Nayel.
In September 2016, Picard became only the second person in the co -
Flowers from the front: Exhibit engages senses to convey emotion of Great War
Amid the mud and death of the First World War, Lt-Col. George Stephen Cantlie found flowers blooming in the gardens, fields and hedges of war-ravaged Europe.
He pressed them between the pages of a book, then sent them home in letters to “wee Celia,” his baby daughter in Montreal. She was only a year old when he sailed in 1914. He feared she would never know him.
“He decided he had to do something to make her remember him,” Cantlie’s surviving granddaughter, oct -

Cameras not needed in Uber vehicles, city says
There’s no evidence to support making Uber drivers install cameras in their cars, based on the first year of legal operations by the service in Ottawa, the city says.
On the other hand, Uber hasn’t provided the city any information on passenger complaints. The bylaw leaves it up to the company to manage its own complaint process, which means it doesn’t have to share that information with the city.
Council asked the bylaw department to report after the first year of a new licens -

Plaque honours James Fletcher, plant scientist who gave Ottawa its Arboretum
It took more than a century, but the man who created the Arboretum will soon have a plaque there honouring his enormous contribution to the scientific understanding of plants across Canada.
James Fletcher died in 1908, aged only 56. But in a short life he set up the machinery for studying Canada’s wild plants and agricultural crops, and also the insects that prey on them.
Fletcher was appointed the Dominion Entomologist and Botanist in 1884, shortly before the Central Experimental Far -

Long-term care audit should be done early in 2018, AG says
City auditor general Ken Hughes says his audit into the city’s long-term care homes should be complete by the first quarter of 2018.
Hughes said his office intends to start the audit in January. There was a bit of a delay to the audit when the province issued an order to the city on safety and care of patients.
The results of the audit will be presented to council’s audit committee when the review is complete.
Hughes told the audit committee on Thursday that he expects his audit will -

Somerset: America's faith in guns never wavers. Why?
Freedom shoots 82 people in a movie theatre. Freedom kills 20 children in their classrooms. Freedom shoots more than 100 in a nightclub; 49 die.
Yet America’s faith does not waver, not even when Freedom machine-guns 600-odd concert-goers. If the shooting of 26 more Americans in their church changes no one’s mind, we have no right to be surprised. Freedom is America’s capricious god, and he revels in the cruelty of his mockeries.
Nothing is so immovable as faith.
We fit the fact -

As one of many organizations that has called on the Ontario government to enact meaningful reforms to the penal system, The Criminalization and Punishment Education Project is pleased that Attorney General Yasir Naqvi is proceeding with measures designed to reduce the number of accused awaiting trial in remand centres. We’re also happy with his directives to limit the conditions imposed on those granted bail as a means of reducing breaches that often result in the unnecessary placement of -
Taking umbrage at being carded, man robs gas station of cigarettes
Police are hunting for a man, with a woman in tow, who threatened a clerk at a Montreal Road gas bar then robbed the place of cigarettes.
Police say it was on Nov. 4 at about 7 a.m. when the man and woman went into the gas station near the Vanier Parkway and asked for cigarettes. When asked for ID, the man became “agitated and verbally aggressive” then walked behind the counter and grabbed smokes. The clerk was threatened when he tried to intervene but unhurt.
The pair then fled -
