Ottawa may have to spend as much as $13.3 million more each year on firefighters — without getting any new services — as a result of new provincial legislation meant to benefit low-income earners.
The possible increase is due to how volunteer firefighters — who are considered on-call workers — are paid, and how their pay would change after the Ontario government’s Bill 148 becomes law.
Bill 148, which is more commonly known as the Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs

New Health Canada guidelines mean accessing abortion pill will be easier
Health Canada has announced new guidelines around the prescribing and dispensing of Mifegymiso, stripping away several barriers women faced to access the so-called “abortion pill.”
The changes include allowing the medication to be directly dispensed to patients by a pharmacist, which they could not do before. The new regulations also allow Mifegymiso to be prescribed up to nine weeks or 63 days into a pregnancy. The previous limit was seven weeks or 49 days.
The new Health Canada gui -
Mayor Watson on Ottawa's 2018 city budget: 'People will be very pleased'
When the 2014 budget was tabled four years ago, Mayor Jim Watson surprised many with a 1.9 per cent tax increase — a lower rate than what had previously been suggested. It was something positive he and other council members seeking re-election the next year could take to voters.
But the mayor, who’s already announced his intention to seek a third term, wasn’t saying Tuesday whether there would be a similar election-year treat in the 2018 budget, to be tabled Wednesday.

Ontario to invest $115 million in new long-term care beds, staffing
At a time when more than 32,000 people are on waiting lists for long-term care in Ontario, the province says it will spend $115 million over the next three years to create thousands of new beds and increase staffing levels.
Premier Kathleen Wynne made the announcement in Hamilton Tuesday, laying out the government’s 20-point plan — called Aging with Confidence — to bolster services for the province’s senior population.
The announcement included 5,000 new long-term care be -

Mayor, city manager to negotiate on LeBreton Flats — without local councillor
The mayor and city manager got the green light Tuesday to speak on the city’s behalf during negotiations between the National Capital Commission and RendezVous LeBreton regarding the redevelopment of LeBreton Flats.
But members of city council’s finance committee Tuesday were divided over what role — if any — Somerset Coun. Catherine McKenney should play. LeBreton Flats is in her ward.
Gloucester-Southgate Coun. Diane Deans raised the question of McKenney’s inv -
Brunet Park pop-up injection site to close
Ottawa’s pop-up injection site in Lowertown’s Raphael Brunet Park is closing.
“It is with heavy hearts that Overdose Prevention Ottawa share that we are closing the service we have provided on the patch of grass located at 307 St. Patrick Street since August 25, 2017,” the organization said in a statement released Tuesday afternoon.

Reevely: Trying to slip a casino through the committee of adjustment is a betrayal
Councillors should be careful what they say about the Hard Rock casino’s effort to add more gambling tables to the Rideau Carleton Raceway, the city’s top lawyer has warned them, even though the casino is trying to undermine a city council decision.
The Rideau Carleton’s relatively small casino is limited to 21 tables for things like poker and roulette, thanks to zoning set by the city and reaffirmed in 2013. Hard Rock signed a deal with the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. las -
Farooqi and Elghawaby: Nothing honourable about violence against women
Survivors of gender-based violence need to be believed and supported. They also need society to describe the harm they experience with appropriate language. Yet time and again, violence against Muslim women is framed as “honour-based,” further stigmatizing victims and the wider communities to which they belong.
It’s time for this to stop.
Recently, news emerged that a young Muslim woman in Gatineau had filed a complaint of domestic abuse against her father. The police called it -
Man in his 60s injured by exploding chlorine container
A man in his 60s was injured Tuesday morning when the container of chlorine he was using to dose his pool exploded.
It happened on a residential street near the intersection of Carling and Woodroffe avenues just after 11 a.m.
The man was conscious but suffered soft-tissue injuries to his face, arm and leg, said paramedics, who dressed his “multiple” wounds and started an IV to raise his falling blood pressure.
He was in stable condition at the trauma centre, paramedics said.

Drink tossed off overpass damaged transport but could have been 'deadly': OPP
A 15-year-old Brockville boy is facing a mischief charge after allegedly dropping a beverage over a Highway 401 overpass Monday afternoon, striking a westbound transport.
The truck’s moonroof was damaged but the result could have been tragic, Insp. Mike Francis warned.
“To propel an item off of an overpass onto a vehicle traveling 100 km/hr can result in an absolute deadly and catastrophic outcome,” the Leeds County OPP detachment commander said. “This is a stark reminder -

Cohen: Here's why Payette was right to speak out
Oh, to be Governor General of Canada, the world’s most earnest country. Oh, to be Governor General encumbered with an education in mathematics, engineering and aeronautics. Oh, to be Governor General celebrating science with a refreshing if artless honesty.
This is what it is to be Julie Payette. Address a science conference, as a scientist, and defend science. Question creationism and a little astrology, too. Dare, if you may, to doubt that a “sugar pill” can cure cancer.

Antiques: Small art provides big value
Q A set of 10 of these small paintings has been in my husband’s family for many years, originating from an uncle who lived in Bermuda. They range in size from 7.5 to 12.5 cm (three to five inches), and the backs of some feature hand-written notes. Dates of those portrayed range from a birth in 1757 to a death in 1845; home towns include Derry, Bristol and Quebec; and titles mentioned include Lord, General, Captain, Earl, Bishop and Lady. Police are being polite about it but their warning after a transport truck driver who got stuck in the wrong lane at the Ivy Lea border crossing is the master of understatement.
It was at 12:25 a.m. Sunday when officers were called to Canada Border Services at the bridge west of Brockville. A transport truck driver had torn off part of a parking canopy and destroyed a surveillance camera.
Turned out the 55-year-old Quebec man had tried to wedge his rig into the auto route lanes, instead of -

Hello, sun!
Ottawa awoke to a nippy morning – it was -5 C at 6 a.m. – but Environment Canada’s forecast is for a few days of welcome sunshine and dry skies after record rains to start November.
The bad news is that it will be downright frigid by the end of the week.
Tuesday is a mix of sun and cloud with a high of 4 C and low of -5 C.
Wednesday’s forecast is for a mix of sun and cloud, a high of 6 C and a low of -3 C.
Oooh I see blue skies and sunshine this morning! Happy -

More missile interceptors to be bought to counter North Korea, protect U.S. and allies
The Trump administration has requested billions more dollars from U.S. lawmakers to further expand the Pentagon’s missile shield as a counter to North Korea.
A budget request for $4 billion U.S. was delivered Monday. The spending is to support “additional efforts to detect, defeat, and defend against any North Korean use of ballistic missiles against the United States, its deployed forces, allies, or partners,” according to the document.
Some of the money would be used to buy 2 -
Turris on the list of Senators leaders who left a void in community
Hockey is the world’s fastest game.
It’s nearly as fast as the speed with which players come and go.
On Saturday, Kyle Turris, then a proud member of the Ottawa Senators, tweeted out a message for his fans/followers — “download the new NHL Supercard 2K18 with me as the official cover athlete.”
Sure enough, the image on the cover was Turris, in action, looking good in his white No. 7 Senators sweater, an ‘A’ for alternate captain on his chest.

Health Canada gives go-ahead for Shepherds of Good Hope injection site
A trailer at the Shepherds of Good Hope became Ottawa’s third legal supervised injection site late Monday.
Ontario Health Minister Eric Hoskins announced in a news release that the federal government has approved an exemption permitting Inner City Health Ottawa to operate a sanctioned injection site in the trailer.
It becomes the fifth such site funded by the province. Hoskins said the province would provide nearly $500,000 in operating funds.
The announcement came as Mayor Jim Watson and -

Ottawa transplant physician honoured for contribution to global stem cell research
Almost 20 years ago, there were skeptics when Ottawa stem cell transplant physician Dr. Harold Atkins and his colleague Dr. Mark Freedman first proposed using stem cells to “reprogram” the immune system to stop the progress of multiple sclerosis.
In June 2016, a paper on 24 patients published in the prestigious medical journal The Lancet concluded that the treatment halted damage to the brain caused by the immune system, stopping relapses for 70 per cent of patients. The disabilities -
