Trailer park with perennial water woes gets new treatment plant
A trailer park in the rural south end of the city with a 30-year history of water problems has a new water treatment plant.
For decades, tenants in the Edwards-area Lynnwood Gardens trailer park have complained that the water is murky and undrinkable. Ottawa Public Health warned residents not to drink the water in June 2016 after finding high levels of arsenic. The water left brown spots on laundry, corroded dishwashers and residents resigned to bathing in water that was discoloured yellow or br -

Ottawa murder witness sentenced to jail for perjury
A former Ottawa escort who lied to police and the court about getting rid of a murder weapon and bloody clothes to help protect murderer and pimp Carson Morin will be jailed for her crimes.
Michelle Thompson, 23, pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice Monday, weeks after already pleading guilty to perjury on Oct. 20.
Though she had admitted to perjury and the facts of obstructing justice at that time, the prosecution and defence had, in error, jointly submitted an illegal sentence to the court -

Bargaining breaks down between Ontario colleges and striking faculty
Talks between Ontario colleges and striking faculty dissolved Monday when the council that represents 24 colleges said it wants faculty to vote on its latest offer.
It called on the union to “suspend” the strike, now in its fourth week, while the vote is taken.
It’s unclear what happens next. The chief bargainer for the Ontario Public Service Employees Union said an agreement could still be reached at the bargaining table. “We’re still at the hotel, ready to bargai -

Editorial: Julie Payette and the Golden Rule
Governors General tend to take up causes while in office. And although they are unelected, Canadians broadly accept their activism. The last resident of Rideau Hall, David Johnston, extolled the virtues of volunteerism. His predecessor, Michaëlle Jean, advocated powerfully for helping Haiti after the devastating 2010 earthquake. Adrienne Clarkson vocally supported the military, the arts and the Arctic.
True, all of them ran into controversy at different times, for different reasons: Cl -

City didn't receive a call from province for tent assistance, Mayor Watson says
The province never called Ottawa City Hall to offer assistance for the unsanctioned Overdose Prevention Ottawa tent in Lowertown, according to Mayor Jim Watson.

House Works: Q&A on Kitec pipe, frost-proof plumbing, insulating brick
Kitec pipe reliability
Q: What are your thoughts on Kitec pipe that was used for infloor heating in my house built in 2001. I’ve heard about failures of this kind of pipe.
A: I think Kitec will continue to work fine for you. I installed Kitec in the floor of my workshop and it’s performed well since 2007. When the whole Kitec leakage controversy first flared up I spoke with top technical people at the company. They explained that in a few regions Kitec fittings developed corrosion an -

Liberal government to re-announce defence contract after keeping cost secret
Last week a number of news organizations, including Postmedia, had articles on Discovery Air Defence winning a $1 billion plus contract to provide the Canadian military with training services.
Discovery Air Defence of Montreal will field a fleet of fighter jets to go toe-to-toe with the military’s aging CF-18s. The firm’s aircraft will also act as the enemy for the Canadian army and navy.
The project, known as the Contracted Airborne Training Services or CATS, will run over an initia -
LaCroix: It's not a woman's world just yet
The following was submitted in response to an Oct. 30 opinion piece, written by David Millard Haskell, and entitled “Shirt spells out truth of gender double standard.”
Most people are not academics, and do not necessarily have the time or desire to search out accurate information; most people do not follow up on what they see on social media, but defer to the experts.
Lo and behold, David Millard Haskell is a social scientist, he works at Wilfred Laurier University, he has a PhD &nda -
Ditch the umbrella and get ready for winter-like weather later in the week
The showers that plagued us on the weekend will give way to a mix of sun and clouds in the afternoon, says Environment Canada.
The temperature will drop Monday from 10 C during the morning commute to about 5 C by the afternoon. It’s a taste of what’s in store later this week, when you can trade your umbrella for a toque.
We may finally be able to hang up the umbrella this week, as the forecast calls for a mix of sun and clouds, but better get out the toque instead for bel -
Letters: Residential school promises, traffic tragedies
We must keep confidentiality promise
Re: Residential school survivors deserve respect, Oct. 30.
Lev Marder suggests that former residential school students need to be asked, not told, what will happen to their confidential documents from the Independent Assessment Process. He is right. And this is what the Supreme Court of Canada decided.
As an adjudicator in the Independent Assessment Process (IAP), I have conducted hundreds of hearings since 2003 and I know that few of these stories would have -
Kot: Some thoughts on the challenges of modern schooling
We’re mid-fall now, getting close to report card time. As a retired special education teacher, I still sometimes think about school. From my experience as both parent and teacher, I humbly offer a few insights to those still in the trenches.
Early identification or diagnosis of learning problems is essential. Parents want their children to be “regular” students, so many deny that their child might have a learning problem; maybe autism or a learning disability.
In order to -
