Scanlan: Coach battles emotion recalling brief life of a special player, Alex Paquette
Saying goodbye to Alex Paquette was the most difficult moment of Tony Iob’s life.
Yet, there is someone in the Iob household hurting worse — Iob’s own son, Cameron, who called Paquette his best friend.
“It hurts to see my son in so much pain,” Iob said, his voice faltering, a week after Paquette’s death in a car crash near Burnstown. Paquette’s funeral was held in Renfrew on Friday.
Cameron Iob, like Paquette, is 18. A goaltender for the Ottawa West -
Gatineau picks a mayor: The election that couldn't make up its mind
For Gatineau voters, this fall has been the election campaign that couldn’t pick an issue.
Taxes? Culture? Floods? Paving sidestreets? Condo towers? Economic growth? Pick any. They have all floated in and out of debates and headlines, even the $79-million decision to build a new hockey arena, long after that decision was supposedly in the bag.
But none of them became a big, standout issue that dominated debates or public discussion.
In the absence of a big issue, incumbent Maxime Pedneaud- -
Police searching for man facing child pornography charges
Ottawa Police are looking for information that could help investigators locate a 45-year-old man facing child pornography charges.
On Oct. 4, officers in the Internet Child Exploitation Unit executed a search warrant in the 100 block of Barrette Street just south of Beechwood Avenue in Vanier and seized electronic devices. Investigators are now searching for Nikolay Krivoshein, who faces one charge of child pornography and another of accessing child pornography.
Investigators believe Krivoshein -
Reevely: Mayor hopes winter freezes pop-up injection site out of Lowertown
The pop-up supervised injection tent run by activist volunteers in Lowertown has saved lives, Mayor Jim Watson says, but he’s still refused an offer from the provincial government to help keep them and their clients warm.
Overdose Prevention Ottawa’s tent in Raphael Brunet Park on St. Patrick Street is modelled on ones in Vancouver, where the climate is warmer, and Toronto, where it isn’t.
Toronto’s pop-up site has been using a light tent, the kind you could buy at Costco -
Egan: My precious Passat targeted in rampant Kijiji-PayPal scam
It pains me to sell my old ride but, in dog or car years, 16 is pretty ancient — so the 2001 VW Passat’s gotta go.
Parting with the olive-skinned beauty, with enough therapy, I will handle. The cold hand of the scammer, though, is the real shock to the system.
Only hours after an ad went on Kijiji and Auto Trader, the inbox lit up with a couple of promising offers, including one from an anxious buyer offering more than the asking price of $1,500.
It seemed weird, but there was someth -
Gatineau votes: Returning Gatineau mayor hunting for support — then for deer
Months of electioneering are winding down, thousands of handshakes, nine mayoral debates (nine!) and now Maxime Pedneaud-Jobin’s focus is mostly on Sunday, when the voting takes place. But not entirely.
He’s also dreaming about next weekend. For the first time in eight years, he’s going hunting. At least, that’s his plan.
In an interview at a Old Hull Starbucks last week, Pedneaud-Jobin was asked to tell something about himself that most people don’t know. It’ -

Gatineau election: Mayor stands alone against massive Place des Peuples
The touchiest development plan in ages in Gatineau is a study in contracts: Two sleek towers, one of them 55 stories tall, soaring over the Canadian Museum of History and narrow streets with little houses nearby.
Gatineau developer Brigil wants to build the Place des Peuples, a hotel and condo complex with commercial space looking across at Parliament Hill.
But the incumbent candidate for mayor and his Action Gatineau party stand in the way.
As well, public opinion is split right down the middle -
'I'm determined to be mayor': Sylvie Goneau a voice for flood victims
Driving along Hurtubise Street in Gatineau, mayoral candidate Sylvie Goneau points to her neighbours’ homes, recalling the flooding in April and May. Some of the houses look fine from the outside, but their lingering emptiness tells a different story.
According to the municipality, 2,214 homes in Gatineau were impacted by the spring flooding and 1,407 people were affected by evacuation orders. Goneau was among them.
Over the summer, the Quebec government drafted new rules that stipulated h -

'Information is power': Local restaurant dishing info on sexual assault, harassment
As the Ottawa restaurant industry reacts to a high-profile admission, one local restaurant is serving up an information session about sexual harassment and assault Sunday.
The event is at Union Local 613 on 315 Somerset St. W. at 3:30 p.m.
Sgt. Carolyn Botting of the Ottawa police sexual assault and child abuse section and Jo-Ann Meloche, a lawyer who provides independent legal counsel to victims of sexual assault, will be on hand to answer questions and facilitate discussion.

Dawson: Laws alone can't make bad cops good
A government alone cannot, with the stroke of a pen or the deliberations of a legislature, change entirely the nature of interactions between police officers and citizens, or the tragedies that sometimes occur. These are the products of centuries of policing culture and practice – right or wrong – and the way they intersect with crime, fear, mental illness and racism.
But Yasir Naqvi, Ontario’s attorney general, and Corrections Minister Marie-France Lalonde, both Ottawa MP -
Review: At the GCTC, self-discovery and laughs mingle musically in Ordinary Days
Ordinary DaysGreat Canadian Theatre CompanyUntil Nov. 19
The odds are that you’ll be able to relate to one or more of the four people singing their hearts out in Ordinary Days.
While other plays in recent memory at the Great Canadian Theatre Company have concerned themselves with prime ministers, King Henry VIII or even racy marionettes, the GCTC production that opened Thursday explores and reveals lives that are closer to the mean than the extremes.

Police seek suspect in Empress Avenue purse-snatching
Ottawa police are recommending residents be vigilant in the Empress Avenue area following a purse-snatching Thursday night.
The theft occurred when the female victim was approached by a man in his 40s riding a bicycle at about 6:50 p.m. When she reached the stairs behind the palliative care institute, the suspect jumped from his bike and grabbed the purse after a short struggle.

Elderly woman in critical condition after struck by truck in Vanier
A woman in her 80s was in life-threatening condition after she was struck by a truck near the intersection of Montreal Road and Lajoie Street in Vanier Friday morning.
Paramedics arriving on the scene found the woman unconscious and began performing “aggressive airway management” measures once she was loaded into the ambulance.
The victim was taken to the Ottawa Hospital’s trauma centre with what paramedics described as a critical head injury.

Gormley: Trudeau is no Superman, and neither is Canada
If Justin Trudeau ought not to have dressed as Superman for Halloween, it is only because he wore the costume a little too well.
When he pulled up his blue hosiery that morning, he may not have regarded the man in the mirror quite as an extraterrestrial hero, but throughout his tenure as prime minister he has made few attempts to dissuade people from believing he was born to save the world from the evil clutches of itself. Eventually, people cannot help but notice that the world goes unsav -

The cost of the purchase is $140 million U.S., according to the U.S. State Department which has advised Congress of the pending Foreign Military Sale. The procurement includes thirty-two AIM-120D Advanced Medium-Range Air-to Air Missiles (AMRAAMs) plus other equipment.

'A turning point': Police legislation will provide more transparency, say Abdi supporters
The Justice for Abdirahman Coalition is pleased that many of its recommendations have been folded into new provincial legislation strengthening police oversight, says a spokeswoman.

Before you go to bed on Saturday night, make sure you set your clocks back by one hour.
The end of daylight saving’s time will occur on Sunday morning at 2 a.m., giving most Canadians one more hour of much-needed sleep.

As the officer was stopped with her cruiser lights flashing, another car plowed into her cruiser from behind.
No one was hurt.
Police at the station didn’t know how fast the car that hit the cruiser was travelling, but said the police car was totalled in the crash.

Buses, taxis back after new Rideau Street sinkhole repaired
Bus and taxi traffic has resumed on Rideau Street after either a pothole or a sinkhole sprang open on the thoroughfare Thursday afternoon.
There’s an explanation for why a new hole appeared Thursday in the same area where a massive sinkhole formed in June 2016 and shut down Rideau Street for months.
This much smaller hole, a few metres wide, prompted OC Transpo to warn riders there will be system-wide delays on several routes after Rideau Street was closed from Sussex Drive to Dalhou -
Maher: No, Canadians need not fear Trump-style populism here
Stephen Maher and Shachi Kurl recently matched wits at the fifth annual Travers Debate in Ottawa, which raises money for the R. James Travers Foreign Corresponding Fellowship.
