How about a Canadian ‘Pledge of Allegiance’?
As a member of a veterans’ group, I have often visited our counterparts in the United States. They invariably open their meetings with the “Pledge of Allegiance” to the flag. It is simple: “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United State

Chief, association, police board welcome changes to Police Services Act
The most contested issue has proven to be the most measured reform to come from proposed changes to the Police Services Act, says Ottawa’s police union boss.
Police chiefs across Ontario have long asked that the province give them the power to suspend without pay officers accused of egregious wrongdoing. The actual cost savings wouldn’t be substantial but the public trust earned would be, they’ve argued.
Thursday, the provincial government granted them that as part of a sweepin -
SIU determines no wrongdoing in 2016 police chase that injured child, father
Ontario’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit, has ruled there are no reasonable grounds to lay charges against an Ontario Provincial Police officer after a 35-year-old man and a four-year-old child were injured in a 2016 single-vehicle crash in Pembroke.
In the early morning of April 17, 2016, the child was taken by her father from her home in Aurora, north of Toronto. Police said the man was spotted driving his 2008 silver Toyota Sienna near Pembroke and a chase e -

Councillor can't derail Salvation Army's shelter proposal by asking who'll pay for it, city lawyers say
Whether the Salvation Army should be allowed to open a new homeless shelter on Montreal Road is strictly a land-use issue and can’t be handled by the group of councillors responsible for social services, the city hall legal department said Thursday afternoon.
The city’s top lawyer Rick O’Connor shot down multiple efforts by Rideau-Vanier Coun. Mathieu Fleury to change the way the city will deal with the charity’s controversial application to move out of its obsolete Booth -

Reevely: Massive overhaul of Ontario policing must come with money to make it work
Ontario will demand better from our police officers — after acknowledging that we’ve been asking them to do too much for too long with the wrong resources and direction.
Officers will still have to be emergency social workers, crisis counsellors and addictions experts. And they will be subject to more public scrutiny. But, if the province lives up to its promises, they will not be left to do as much of this alone as they have been.
On Thursday in Toronto, Community Safety Minister Ma -

New sinkhole on Rideau Street forces street closure, buses rerouted
Crews are working to determine the cause of a newly formed sinkhole in the north lane of Rideau Street near Sussex Drive, which forced rush-hour traffic and bus services to be rerouted Thursday afternoon.
The hole, a few metres wide, is located in the same area where a massive sinkhole formed on June 8, 2016, causing a gas leak, building evacuations and closing the street down for months.

'Rocksino' at Rideau Carleton Raceway quietly asks for more table games
The Hard Rock Casino Ottawa is making its play to expand gambling, choosing to avoid the political games at city hall.
Hard Rock, which has partnered with the Rideau Carleton Raceway to build a new entertainment facility at the horse track, is asking for permission to add 14 more table games.
The zoning for the land at 4837 Albion Rd. only allows for a maximum of 21 table games, which was set by city council in 2011.
Hard Rock believes increasing the number of table games to 35 is considered a m -

Provincial police charge Ottawa couple in $100,000 fraud in Sharbot Lake area
Ontario Provincial Police officers have charged a couple from Ottawa with fraud in connection with a confidence scam police say bilked victims in the Sharbot Lake area of as much as $100,000 from August, 2013 to March, 2016.
According to police, the pair allegedly claimed to have political connections that could be used to influence, engage and establish trust with victims. In some cases, police allege the accused would pose as people in positions of power to coerce their victims to hand over mo -
Gravity means rain plus Gatineau hills is a bad combination for flooding
Water flows downhill, and the Outaouais adds an exclamation mark to the truism.
Each heavy rainstorm seems to vent its greatest anger in West Quebec.
This week, washed out roads in Gatineau, Chelsea, and Denholm. Last May brought devastating floods.
And the rainstorm of St. Jean Baptiste Day 2011, washed out sections of Highways 148 and 105, along with countless smaller roads and the Wakefield Steam Train tracks. It left Ontario mostly intact.
The difference is partly about hills, or the lack of -

Name that pot shop: What should Ontario's marijuana stores be called?
The name of the government agency that will sell pot to Ontario has been revealed: the Ontario Cannabis Retail Corp. Doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue. But neither does LCBO, the name of the provincial liquor monolith that sells us whiskey and wine. That acronym is so well known in Ontario that today no one bothers to spell it out.
Will the acronym for the new marijuana agency — OCRC — become just as familiar? It has a certain slurry symmetry. It could lend itself to a -

Nuclear safety boss blows up over 'outrageous' complaint about yoga garb
When an anonymous troll complained last month about what the employees at the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission were wearing to lunchtime yoga sessions – even singling out women he or she railed looked like “prostitutes” – the agency’s president fired back.

Sean McCann hosts fundraising concert to supply guitars for vets
Military veteran Jim Lowther felt trapped in a cycle of despair brought on by his injuries, both mental and physical, when he remembered the acoustic guitar that was tucked away in a corner of his home in Halifax.
“One day, the medications weren’t working, and I had tried everything — yoga, meditation, you name it — to help break the feeling of despair,” he recalls of that dark day in 2009. “Then I picked up my guitar, dusted it off and started banging on it. -
Canterbury High in 'secure mode' after social media threat
Ottawa police are at Canterbury High School in the city’s southeast end investigating a “suspicious social media message that was received by a student.”

“There is no lockdown. The school is in secure mode, meaning nobody can come in or out of the school,” said Const. Marc Soucy.
“But in fact normal activities are going on.”

Khan: Some tough questions about Canada's immigration targets
The immigration levels for 2018 announced this week by Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen come as no surprise. The Liberals have been vying to go beyond their predecessors since they took office; their plan would welcome one million new entrants by 2020 (there were 260,000 in 2015 alone).
For a relatively under-populated country like Canada, this otherwise routine policy is extremely contentious.
On the one hand, Canada is vying to be seen as a global leader in everything Canadian, particula -

Ontario Liberals announce overhaul of policing legislation, oversight
The Ontario Liberals are announcing plans to overhaul the province’s police watchdogs, including an expansion of the Special Investigations Unit’s mandate, and updated rules that would improve public reporting and set time limits on investigations into police.

It also recorded a net loss of $26.8 million compared to profit of $25.1 million during the same period a year ago.
But the summary data told you very little about what’s really going on.

Crash leaves car in the outfield on Fallowfield
A car took a substantial trip across a field beside Fallowfield Road during the Thursday rush hour, but early information was that no one was hurt.
The accident took place near the corner of Prince of Wales Drive, causing major rush hour traffic delays.
Police didn’t have an immediate explanation for why the car skidded so far from the road, going down an embankment and through a fence on the way.
Roads were wet after hours of rain.
A tow truck pulled the car out of the grass.

'Rocksino' at Rideau Carleton Raceway asks for more table games
The Hard Rock Casino Ottawa is making its play to expand gaming.
Hard Rock believes increasing the number of table games to 35 is considered a minor variance to the land-use rules, so it has filed i -
