A 49-year-old man who was charged with child pornography offences in July after police executed a search warrant on an Ottawa home now faces numerous additional charges.
In May, the child sexual exploitation unit of the OPP had started an investigation on “Chatstep,” a disposable web-based chatroom. Officers traced the IP address that was linked to images of prepubescent child pornography and a search warrant was executed at a residence in the west end. At the time, digital devices w

Ottawa Valley buries a native son
Shortly past noon Wednesday, two OPP cruisers bolted across Highway 17, lights flashing, forming a makeshift road block.
The reason became instantly clear: police were making way for the funeral procession for 18-year-old Brandon Thomas Hanniman, one of two Renfrew Timberwolves Tier 2 hockey players who died as the result of a single-vehicle crash on Calabogie Road on Oct. 27.
For 30 minutes-plus, police monitored the flow of cars turning left onto 17 from Forester’s Falls Road, next to th -
Algonquin fall term may be extended; bargaining back on
Students at Algonquin College may have their fall term extended to make up for time lost during the strike by faculty, says college president Cheryl Jensen.
In a letter to students, Jensen said the college will try to avoid extending the end of the school year, too, but that depends on how long the strike lasts.
However, Jensen said it’s good news that Ontario colleges and the union representing 12,000 striking faculty will return to bargaining Thursday.

Editorial: Province gets it right on bail reform plan
The Ontario government has now formally moved to reform the bail process in this province. It’s a necessary, welcome step – and even a politically brave one.
The justice system has long staggered under a heavy load of court backlogs and serious problems due to overcrowded jails. And more than 60 per cent of people in Ontario’s jails are legally innocent, awaiting trial.
That so many are on remand contributes to crammed, inhumane living conditions. This newspaper has reported on -

Reevely: Reviewer of city's nursing homes doesn't expect to look at broader problems in senior care
Greg Fougère has five months to tell the city government what’s wrong in its long-term care homes, helping to restore confidence in them after a summer of scandals.
The timeline is “very tight,” he said Wednesday, his first on the job as an independent reviewer of how the city runs its four nursing homes. The former leader of the Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre owes a report by the end of March.
Although he says he’s been given no restrictions on wh -

Will road safety programs be funded by fines?
The next city council will face a decision on how to fund future road safety programs, possibly relying on fine revenue rather than property taxes.
Rob Wilkinson, co-ordinator of the Safer Roads Ottawa program, said councillors have asked staff to look at a self-funding model to deliver the road safety program. Other than property taxes, the only source of revenue for such a program would likely be traffic fines, which are currently part of city hall’s general revenue.

Chu and Elliott: Why no needle and syringe program in our prisons?
Implementing needle and syringe programs in federal prisons could prevent numerous new HIV and Hepatitis C virus infections each year, saving tens of millions of dollars.

But the Trudeau government has repeatedly declared its commitment to harm reduction and evidence-based policy, to Charter right -
