Forensic investigators searching the scene of Nathalie Warmerdam’s slaying identified two items of interest in her bedroom, though there was evidence she never made it that far.
OPP Const. Andrew Doherty testified Monday police found a “domestic violence panic alarm” on her bed, right next to her pillow.
Under her bed, still in its carrying case, was a shotgun.
Warmerdam’s body was found at the base of the stairs, still wearing her housecoat, her half-eaten breakfast on t

Suspect sought in assault of gas station employee
Ottawa police are looking to identify a man suspected of assaulting a gas station employee in early October.
On Sunday Oct. 8 around 6:30 p.m., police said an employee from a gas station confronted a “suspicious” man on the 1600 block of Bank Street, near Heron Road.
Police allege the suspect became violent in the confrontation and assaulted the employee, before leaving the area and heading east on Heron Road.
Police described the suspect as an Aboriginal man in his late 20s or early -
Egan: Scary sinkhole in Barrhaven on eve of Halloween
On the eve of Halloween, it wasn’t the trick or treat Jeff Burnett was expecting — a grave-sized sinkhole on the front lawn.
After a concerned call from his wife, the Barrhaven resident hurried home from work around mid-day Monday to find a chunk of their lawn on Broxburn Crescent had disappeared.
By late afternoon, after a deluge earlier in the day, the oval-shaped hole was at least a metre across and well over a metre deep — big enough “to swallow a kid,” a city w -
Elaborate fake gold bar sparks investigation by RBC, police
RBC Royal Bank is working with police to investigate allegations that one of its branches on Bank Street sold a gold bullion one-ounce bar that turned out to be an elaborate counterfeit.
CBC reported Monday that on Oct. 18, Samuel Tang walked into the bank, located at the corner of Bank Street and First Avenue, to buy a one-ounce gold bar. Tang is a gemologist and jewelry designer who works across the road at Joy Creations. The small bar he was provided looked as if it had come from the Roy -
Reevely: More accused should get bail, not jail, Naqvi says
Ontario’s Crown prosecutors will stop trying to keep people in jail while they face charges unless there’s no other choice, their boss Yasir Naqvi said Monday.
The province’s attorney general and the Liberal MPP for Ottawa Centre has sent a new directive on bail — what prosecutors should seek and what they should agree to — that’s to kick in on Nov. 14.
It’s virtually the opposite of the 12-year-old instruction it will replace.

A Petawawa soldier was sentenced Monday to eight years and nine months in prison for secretly videotaping and taking photographs of women during sexual assaults.
In Pembroke superior court, Cpl. Derrick Gallagher learned he will receive five years and four months of credit for the pre-sentence custody he had already accumulated.

Redblacks fan upset Grey Cup tickets left on door handle

Borutski trial hears dramatic testimony from takedown in Kinburn field
Before Basil Borutski was arrested near Kinburn, an Ottawa police tactical squad first had to clear the bush of a group of elementary schoolchildren on a field trip.

Ottawa's soggiest year just won't stop
We didn’t just set a record for wet. We blew through it Monday with two months to spare, leaving the capital wondering: How much more water can there be?
The year 2017 has brought first heavy snow, then May floods, a Canada Day mudfest, and in spite of September’s record sunny spell, two wet records together this week.
• 2017 is Ottawa’s rainiest year on record, since 1873. We’ve had 1,028.8 mm through Sunday night, and the average for a whole year is 758. (Context: -

Canada's tough new law against rights abusers should be put to use

PM's commute includes bypassing washed-out road on ATV
Even Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had a messy Monday morning commute.
The road was washed out leading to the prime minister’s summer residence at Harrington Lake, which is nestled in the woods of the Gatineau Hills near Meech Lake.
A spokeswoman confirmed that Trudeau, who always has an RCMP security detail in tow, had to hop onto a John Deere ATV to take backroads until he reached a passable roadway. He was then picked up by his official motorcade to make the trip to Ottawa.

Ottawans laugh in the face of miserable weather
Ottawans are a hardy lot but they’re apparently feeling like a wet cat or a character in a horror movie this morning.
On a Monday morning featuring floods and power outages, Twitter users shared a few laughs to brighten the mood.
Lights on, keep your distance, watch for puddles…..and be patient today. #otttraffic pic.twitter.com/jkIaR4xvmH

Did members of SEAL Team Six murder a U.S. Army Green Beret?
In a case that is shaping up like an episode of the TV show NCIS, two members of the U.S. Navy’s top special forces unit, SEAL Team Six, are said to be under investigation for killing a U.S. Army Green Beret in Mali.
Army Staff Sgt. Logan J. Melgar, a special forces engineer, was killed in June while serving in the African nation. He had been strangled, according to reports.

Allowing destruction of residential school records a bad court ruling
In early October, the Supreme Court of Canada passed a unanimous decision in Canada v Fontaine, in extraordinarily ordinary fashion. The judgment upholds the decisions of lower courts to destroy what are called Independent Assessment Process (IAP) documents after a 15-year retention period.
The documents contain testimonies and evidence of the more than 37,000 residential school survivors who shared their experiences during the IAP, which collected the evidence to distribute compensation to -
Why we need more women and minorities in science and tech
Who was the first Canadian female surgeon of colour? One would think that with a bit of research, the answer to this question would easily be found, but after searching and scouring the Internet I still cannot find the answer anywhere. Even more infuriating is that fact that if one image-searches the word “doctor,” all the images are of older Caucasian men.
The representation of women in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) is dismal. Men still out -
Haskell: The future really is female, not male – and it's not fair
An Ontario Grade 12 student, Erica Brown, made the news recently when she wore a T-shirt to her high school with the slogan “The Future is Female.”
A female teacher suggested Brown’s message might make some boys at the school feel uncomfortable and asked if she thought it would be appropriate for a male student to wear a T-shirt with the slogan “The Future is Male.”
She was not told to remove the shirt but to simply “think about” it.
Brown thought about -
