Canadian special forces have put on hold the assistance it is providing to Iraqi security forces.
Canadian commandos have been working with the Kurds and some assistance has been provided to the Iraqis. But that has all been put on hold as Iraqi and Kurdish forces battle each other.
“Given the fluidity of the current situation, Canada’s Special Operations Task Force has temporarily suspended the provision of assistance to various elements of Iraqi security forces,” Canadian For

Fire doused, no injuries in Vanier apartment building
Fire crews doused a blaze in a Vanier apartment building Friday morning.
They were called to 650 Rue de l’église off Montreal Road at about 11:30 a.m., confirmed on arrival that there was a working fire billowing black smoke and had the flames under control at 11:53 a.m.
Crews were remained on scene for some time after that, clearing smoke and making sure the fire hadn’t spread to other parts of the three-storey building west of St. Laurent Boulevard.

Michael Pitfield (1937-2017): Trudeau confidant stood at nexus of government, politics
April 17, 1982 was one of the most important days in Canadian history.
Sitting in the shadow of the Peace Tower, Canada’s head of state, Queen Elizabeth, and head of government, prime minister Pierre Trudeau, prepared to sign the constitutional proclamation, the final act in granting Canada full sovereignty.
And there, too, was Michael Pitfield, clerk of the Privy Council, pointing helpfully as if to say, “Sign here, Your Majesty.”
It seemed to be ever that way for Pitfield, th -
Politics matters: Children, fossil fuels and, of course, ethics
Political cynics had plenty of fodder this week, with the curious timing of multibillion-dollar-spending announcements and morphing Liberal views on veils.
Parliament Hill was caught up in the twists and turns of Finance Minister Bill Morneau’s ethics saga. But the Liberals also gloated over Monday’s upset byelection win deep in traditionally separatist territory in Quebec.
At the same time, the Liberals’ rhetoric on what to do about Quebec’s new ban on face coverings whe -
City doesn't want to cover LeBreton Flats cleanup costs, report reveals
LeBreton Flats needs to be a showpiece neighbourhood once it’s rebuilt, the city says, as long as it costs the city government as little as possible.
It wants nothing to do with cleaning up contaminated ground in the former industrial neighbourhood, for instance. It wants users of a new hockey arena there to pay for extra transit service for games and concerts. It doesn’t want new parks and civic spaces there to be too fancy to maintain.
This is all laid out in the bargaining positio -
Outpouring of sorrow after death of young hockey player in crash, three others injured
Both Renfrew-area residents and the region’s junior hockey communities were in mourning Friday after a crash that killed a teenage player and injured three others.
Brandon Thomas Hanniman of Admaston Bromley Township was pronounced dead at the scene on Calabogie Road about two kilometres south of Burnstown, a village south of Renfrew.
The four young men, all of them 18, were in the car when it went off the road and into a rock cut. A passing motorist came upon the wrecked vehicle and calle -
Crash survivor searches for nurse who came to her aid on Highway 416 in August
Amanda Chartrand’s hero is a woman she’s never met, and she wants to thank her for likely saving her life.
Chartrand, 24, was driving home toward Kemptville on Highway 416 just past Roger Stevens Drive on Aug. 11 around 11:20 p.m. when she hit the shoulder of the road, overcorrected and flipped her Jeep several times before skidding almost 100 feet into a ditch.
While a roll bar and seat belt provided some protection, her head smashed against the driver-side window during the violent -
How a stroke brought new urgency to the work of an Ottawa cholesterol researcher
Xiaohui Zha was in Baltimore watching one of her students make a presentation when she suddenly lost hearing in one ear and then felt a strange surge from one side of her head to the other.
The senior scientist with The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and associate professor at the University of Ottawa did not want to interrupt the presentation, so she walked carefully across the front of the room and out the door into a hallway where she promptly collapsed.

Gentiane MG
The young Montreal pianist Gentiane MG (Michaud-Gagnon, if you must know) is on a roll this week, having won the François-Marcaurelle/ Guilde des musiciens et musiciennes du Québec prize just as she and her trio arrived in Mexico for two weeks of touring.
What’s all the fuss about? I can refer you to the 25-year-old McGill University grad’s debut album, released this summer, for an answer as to why Michaud-Gagnon&rsquo -

Allegations of 'inappropriate' conduct sink Gatineau council candidate's campaign
Allegations of “inappropriate” kissing and other “inappropriate” actions have torpedoed the election campaign of a candidate in Gatineau’s municipal election, as several unnamed women have complained about new candidate Patrick Doyon.
Two Outaouais TV stations — TVA and Radio-Canada — say Doyon told them Friday he is withdrawing from the contest for the seat in the Plateau district.
Doyon hasn’t responded to calls from Postmedia. As of Friday after -
This brilliant Ottawa tech pioneer had wealth and a wonderful family. His suicide shocked everyone.
It was an unseasonably warm day in early November when an Ottawa police officer noticed the car.
The silver Honda Civic was parked on a Vanier street, blocking traffic.
When the constable approached, the man inside was, as he’d later be described, “combative,” and would reply to the officer only in German.
The driver’s licence indicated the occupant was Antoine Paquin, one of this city’s best-known entrepreneurs.

Editorial: Still awaiting Morneau's apology
When Finance Minister Bill Morneau failed to disclose his French villa or put his assets in a blind trust, and when he continued owning shares in his family firm through a numbered company, what did he think was going to happen?
Indiscretions commonly come to light in politics. So why did Morneau – arguably the second-most important man in the federal government – act as he did? And does he even understand the problem? He has said he followed the advice of the federal ethic -
Reevely: Ottawa MPPs bill to forbid discrimination for poverty, refugee status, more
Employers shouldn’t be allowed to demand their employees take genetic tests, dentists shouldn’t be allowed to evict homeless-seeming people from their waiting rooms, landlord shouldn’t be able to refuse to rent to refugee claimants, and people who’ve had criminal charges dropped shouldn’t have that held against them, says Ottawa-Vanier Liberal MPP Nathalie Des Rosiers, who’s proposing changes to Ontario’s human-rights code.

Firefighters tackle backyard shed fire in the Glebe
Firefighters worked hard Friday to protect neighbouring homes from a fire that broke out in a backyard shed in the Glebe.
The high-heat conditions did damage to the house on Oakland Avenue near Monk Street where fire crews were called at about noon.
Firefighters issued the all-clear after using thermal imaging cameras to search for embers.
Police were holding the scene until a fire investigator could arrive.
UPDATE: Oakland Ave fire originated in backyard shed. High heat conditions damaged home. -

What does $250 on Kijiji get you? A herd of alpaca located near Gatineau
Have you been feeling lonely lately and longing for company? Is your life missing the warmth that can only be found in a friend who’ll give you the shirt off his back so you can bundle up in the coziest socks, mittens, tuques and sweaters during the long cold winter?
And do you have at least a couple of acres of land, preferably with grass or hay and some sort of shelter, all enclosed by at least a two-metre-high fence?
If you answered yes to all of these, then you could be in for the deal -

Gormley: Unfortunately, Morneau isn't an isolated case of conflict
Finance Minister Bill Morneau must feel quite lonely in his infamy. Most of us, after all, cannot relate to having tens of million of dollars’ worth of shares; or, if we do have them, cannot relate to having the power to regulate the very company those shares are in. To whom can he turn for sympathy, then, when pushing regulations that may have benefited him financially cost him a great deal politically?
In the midst of his seeming isolation, this solitary figure, the people’s r -

The victim was still hanging from her seatbelt in the vehicle, which was upside-down in the ditch.

What’s this? Ontario should crank up the cost of cigarettes, raise the smoking age to 21 and rate movies 18A if someone dares smoke on-screen, according to a new report.
“It has taken far too long to stop a problem that we know how to solve,” says the report, commissioned by the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care.
It’s a document so outlandish, it’s almost satirical. Honestly, have the anti-smokers got nothing new?

But there was a wraparound veranda held up by gingerbread brackets, rare pressed-tin siding and his feeling that the house simply belonged on its 120 acres of fallow fields and stands of trees. A suburban Montrealer who’d long dreamed of living in the country, he walked down to th -

New unit at Perley Rideau key to reducing hospital overcrowding
A key piece in Ontario’s plan to reduce hospital overcrowding will fall into place Friday at Ottawa’s Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre with the launch of a 20-bed unit aimed at getting frail elderly patients out of hospital beds and into a more appropriate setting.
The first of its kind in Canada, the unit will provide medical care and allow extended recovery time for patients who would otherwise be occupying hospital beds. The unit essentially moves aspects of the acu -

MacDougall: Ahead of Halloween, both Trudeau and Trump looking frightfully shameless
With Halloween around the corner, Liberals are frantically ditching their snazzy emperor’s new clothes in favour of more middle class costumes.
How else to interpret Tuesday’s surprise budget update full of benefit top-ups and tax changes, cryptically titled: “Doubling Down on Progress for the Middle Class”?

A monument in Oakville commemorates those who served with the 14th SS Galizien Division (aka 1st Galician/Galizien or the 1st Ukrainian Division). Another monument in Edmonton honors Roman Shukhevych, the leader of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army.
