How long will college faculty strike last? If past is any indication, it could drag on
Twenty three days. That’s the average length of the three previous strikes by college faculty in Ontario. As the current strike heads into Day 12, pressure is growing to settle the dispute. But neither the union, college management nor the government appears willing to budge yet.
Student association leaders from eight colleges are pressuring Deb Matthews, the minister responsible for post-secondary education, for a solution that would allow students at 24 colleges to get back to clas -

Egan: Chastened chef Matthew Carmichael a 'product' of an industry with a problem
Somewhere between Julia Child and Gordon Ramsay, our daily bread became a form of worship and chefs our high priests in aprons.
Anyway you slice it, food has gotten a little weird.
Of course, high-end chefs can holler and harass — have we not made them into geniuses with sizeable public profiles and pots of sizzling oil?
For better or worse, “celebrity” chef Matthew Carmichael’s name appeared on Citizen and Sun pages at least 69 times in the past few years. I flip through -

Redblacks add to firepower with howitzer celebrating touchdowns
Good news and bad news for the folks — you know who you are — who get upset at the roar of military planes soaring over the Stadium at TD Place during Redblacks games.
The good news is there will be no flybys Friday night when the Redblacks face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
The bad news for some, and good news for others, is the 30th Field Artillery Regiment will be in the house for fan appreciation night.

Canadian spy agency’s frat house atmosphere revealed in new report
A scathing review of the Toronto office of Canada’s spy agency has painted a picture of a dysfunctional organization that is more akin to a frat house than a government’s intelligence-gathering agency.
According to the article by Jim Bronskill of the Canadian Press, the assessment found leadership skills “wanting” and employees facing reprisals for speaking out. Here is more from the CP story:

Reevely: Hydro prices to keep rising, just a bit more slowly, Ontario government says
The average Ontario household’s electricity bill will reach nearly $200 a month before levelling off in 2030, the provincial government predicted as it released its latest long-term energy plan Thursday morning.

Last month, the Kurds held a referendum in which those who turned out voted 92 per cent in favour of independence. Cue cheers and celebrations in the Kurdish Highlands of Iraq.
It was not a popular move among K -
