Twenty years ago, there was limited knowledge of brain trauma and concussion treatment.
At what point do we know too much?
Dr. Kristian Goulet, medical director at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario concussion clinic, says that one of his greatest fears is fear itself, when it comes to concussions and public perception.
“It’s almost as though we’ve gone too far with awareness,” Goulet said in an interview. “Now kids are living in fear of head injuries.

Orléans little league caught in doggone squeeze play over Heritage Park
A dust-up between Orléans dog owners and baseball players is playing out at Ottawa City Hall, as a councillor cries foul over a bid to put a new diamond in a treasured off-leash park.
The Orléans Little League Baseball Association is proposing to build a new tyke-sized baseball diamond in greenspace at Heritage Park, with help from a city grant program available for major community projects.
Bruce Murdock, an executive member with the little league, said the organization wants -
Reevely: Top Liberals acquitted in Sudbury bribery trial, but damage is done
A judge ended the corruption trial of two influential Ontario Liberals Tuesday afternoon, deciding that bribery charges against them were so weak he didn’t even need to hear a whole defence case before acquitting them.
Patricia Sorbara and Gerry Lougheed, a top campaign marshal for Premier Kathleen Wynne and a party potentate in Sudbury, walked out of court after Judge Howard Borenstein entered directed verdicts on charges under the province’s Elections Act.

Ontario to require individual care plans for students with certain medical conditions
TORONTO The Ontario government says it will require school boards to create individual care plans for students with certain medical conditions in a bid to make schools safer for them.
Boards will be required to provide students who have medical conditions such as anaphylaxis, asthma, diabetes and epilepsy with a plan of care that outlines contacts and procedures tailored to the specific needs of the student.

Why does Ottawa forget how to drive when it rains?
CBC.ca
I just knew it. Shortly after 5 a.m. the rain started falling on the city. I thought — Tuesday, not close to the weekend in any way, not a PD day — a full-load commute, with poor visibility. It's going to be awful. Was it ever. -

Driver registers double-double, for speed and booze level
A Kingston police officer nabbed a 58-year-old man driving his Ford Mustang at more than twice the legal limit.
But back at the police station, officers learned the man had doubled another limit, too.
The officer was doing speed enforcement on Battersea Road at about 10:30 a.m. last Friday when he spotted the man’s northbound car flying along while passing another car in an area with a double-centre line. Radar clocked the motorist at 128 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone. There was an open ca -

Quebec daycare workers, including 19 Outaouais centres, poised for strike
Workers at more than 400 Quebec daycares — 19 of them in the Outaouais — will strike for one day on Monday, with five more strike days coming that have not yet been identified.
The 11,000 teachers are members of the Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN).
Teachers have been without a contract for two and a half years, the union says.
It says there has been progress during negotiations on working conditions, but not on salaries or pensions.

Grieving Ottawa mother takes on tech giants — and wins
Maureen Henry took on the tech giants this month — and won.
The Ottawa mother was seeking access to the digital footprint left by her son Dovi, 23, who was found dead along Toronto’s waterfront in July 2014 but not identified for nearly two years.
The police suspect it was suicide; Henry refuses to believe it. Because the Glebe Collegiate graduate and former U of T student had been in the water for some weeks, the time and cause of death could not be determined. An investigation fail -

Reevely: Ontario's pretty much abandoned endangered species, environment commissioner says
The Ontario government hasn’t turned down a request for a permit to harm a threatened species in four years, the province’s environment commissioner reported Tuesday, and it doesn’t check whether the rules for the permits are followed anyway.
Eastern Ontario is a hot spot for this stuff, commissioner Dianne Saxe says in a damning section of her annual report, because we have a lot of development going on and a lot of animals and plants that are in danger. Collectively they&rsqu -

Pehringer: On the rise of the right in Austria – a reply to Shannon Gormley
Confronted with the headline on Shannon Gormley’s recent column (“How Austria managed to elect neo-Nazis,” Oct. 21), an ambassador would most likely react with an angry protest. I will take a different approach and simply set the record straight on a few facts.
“Austria elected neo-Nazis” comes not even a year after Austrian voters were praised for electing, with a clear majority, a candidate of the Green Party, rather than a representative of the “far-right,& -

Populism is not Nazism
Re: How Austria managed to elect neo-Nazis, Oct. 21.
Accusing people and governments of being neo-Nazis should not be done lightly and clearly Shannon Gormley is light on understanding the rise of “populist” parties in Europe.

House Works: DIY septic system rescue
Back in 2012, I wrote about my backed up septic system and the non-traditional methods I was using to try and solve the problem. Five years later people are still asking me how things are going and if the approach I wrote about back then has proven worthwhile. The good news is that my system has been working perfectly for more than three years, though the original fix I was pursuing back in 2012 has nothing to do with the success.
There are two main reasons septic systems are a big deal for peop -

Man, 61, from Cornwall dead after Monday crash
Ontario Provincial Police have revealed the identity of the victim in a single vehicle crash near South Stormont Township, about 90 kilometres southeast of Ottawa, Monday afternoon.
Police said Edmund Poirier, 61, of Cornwall was travelling east on Highway 401 at around 4:30 pm when his car left the road near the McConnell Avenue off-ramp.
The car rolled before it came to a stop in the median.
Poirier was pronounced dead at the scene.

Egan: Former CTV anchor Carol Anne Meehan quitting daily radio show
Carol Anne Meehan is leaving the daily airwaves again — this time on her own terms.
Meehan, 60, said Tuesday she is resigning from the afternoon slot on radio station 1310 News on Nov. 17 — ironically the date she was let go from CTV Ottawa in 2015.
The firing set off a wave of sympathy for Meehan, coming only weeks after the death, at age 73, of CJOH legend Max Keeping, with whom she shared the supper hour anchor desk for more than 20 years.

Laurie Young's homecoming dance
Twenty years ago, Laurie Young was a promising young dancer in Ottawa when the influential German choreographer Sasha Waltz invited her to Berlin.
It was a huge opportunity for Young, a Canterbury grad who, at the time, was dancing with Ottawa’s Le Groupe Dance Lab. Led by artistic director Peter Boneham and housed in Arts Court, the now-defunct dance lab was created as a workshop centre for contemporary dance research and development, with an ensemble of dancers to help visiting choreogra -

New NAC Chef Kenton Leier brings humility and teamwork to the table
Ottawa chef Kenton Leier has put his days as a hotel chef behind him.
Over the past two decades, Leier has done the grand tour of Ottawa’s big downtown hotels, which included stints working at the Chateau Laurier, the Delta, the Marriott and, most recently, the Westin. But in June, he was appointed the National Arts Centre’s new executive chef, and the past Wednesday a belated event for VIPs was held to welcome him.
At the NAC, Leier follows in the footsteps of chefs John Morris, Mic -
King of the Yees brings lion dances, face changers and a father-daughter relationship to the stage

Despite the specifics of her story, it’s a tale that everyone can relate to, says Sherry J. Yoon, who directs the B.C.-based Gateway Theatre production that comes to the National Arts Centre next week. Here’s more from Yoon’s interview with Lynn Saxberg:

Centre Block evacuated after false-alarm reports of smoke
It turned out to be a false alarm – at least for those who had their umbrellas.
On the day the Liberals are set to deliver their fiscal update, the Centre Block was evacuated after a 9:07 a.m. call reporting smoke in the building.
Fire crews search the building and found no sign of a fire and staff were heading back into the building at about 9:30 p.m.
Someone needed an extension to finish their homework. Classic! #cdnpoli

Liberals snatch Quebec riding in federal byelection
Justin Trudeau’s Liberals have pulled off a stunning byelection upset, snatching the federal riding of Lac-Saint-Jean away from the Conservatives.
A Liberal victory in Quebec’s nationalist heartland — where the party hasn’t won since 1980 and where it posted its worst result in the province in 2015 — would have been remarkable at any time.
But it was particularly sweet for the prime minister on Monday, coming at time when his government has been mired for weeks in c -
In wooing Amazon, Ottawa makes one list – 'most desperate stunts'
Ottawa’s made at least one list in its bid to land the new Amazon headquarters.
Too bad it’s Vanity Fair’s roundup of the dozen most “desperate stunts” that cities have pulled to catch the online retail giant’s eye.
The Manhattan-based mag picked up a tweet from an alert Ottawan reporting that Sens fans were invited to “make noise for Amazon” at a recent home game against the Vancouver Canucks.
By all accounts, the response was “tepid.” -

Heavy rain causes traffic chaos in Tuesday rush hour
Traffic slowdowns brought on by rain and a handful of fender benders caused havoc for morning commuters in Ottawa.

Highway 416 northbound saw traffic backed up all the way from the Highway 417 exit through to Barrhaven. Traffic travelling eastbound along Highway 417 was also stopped into Kanata, as a st -
