App tells Ottawa residents what kind of trash to put at the curb
Determined to make recycling easier for residents, the City of Ottawa has launched an app that simply tells people what type of trash to put at their curbs each week.
Coun. David Chernushenko, chair of council’s environment and climate protection committee, called it the “one-stop shop” for garbage.
The app, which is called Ottawa Collection Calendar, was produced by ReCollect Systems and is available on Apple and Android devices.

'Unusual activity' at Canadian Tire Centre just a military promo video
The army is dropping into the Canadian Tire Centre Monday night — literally.
The soldiers will be rappelling from a CH-146 Griffon helicopter as the Ottawa Senators film a promotional video in preparation for the team’s upcoming Canadian Armed Forces Night. The aerial exercise will take place between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Ottawa Fire Services sent out a public service announcement Monday afternoon to alert people who might see “unusual activity” at the arena.

Rowan's Law concussion legislation seeks a foothold outside Ontario
The first annual Rowan’s Legacy Symposium hopes to be the start of something big.
The conference, part of the University of Ottawa’s brain health awareness week, heightens concussion protocols in the name of Rowan Stringer, a 17-year-old rugby player who died in 2013 after multiple concussions.
Rowan’s parents, Gord and Kathleen, decided the day after Rowan’s death that they would go public with the story to help prevent similar deaths. An inquest into Rowan’s death -

Wife of fallen NFL star shares CTE story with Ottawa brain symposium
Lisa McHale was relieved to learn her husband had been diagnosed with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE).
This, of course, was long after Tom McHale, just 45, had died in 2008 of an accidental drug overdose.
The news of a degenerative CTE diagnosis, from Dr. Ann McKee at the Boston University CTE Centre, brought some clarity and understanding to Lisa McHale, emotions she shared in Ottawa last week during a brain health awareness symposium at Algonquin College.

Reevely: Ontario promises temporary hospital beds to deal with flu season, somewhere
Ontario is opening 2,000 more hospital and health-care beds this year to help deal with overcrowding and lengthening wait lists, Health Minister Eric Hoskins said Monday morning, though it doesn’t yet know where an awful lot of them will be.
In many health regions, including Ottawa’s, “additional beds/spaces” in places yet to be determined is the biggest category on the list Hoskins released. Those “beds” for which there’s money but nowhere yet to spend -

Huge blow for Redblacks, Sinopoli done for season
Ottawa Redblacks receiver Brad Sinopoli is done for the season.

Firefighters douse March Road car blaze
Ottawa firefighters were called to tackle a car fully engulfed in flames, creating a towering column of black smoke over March Road Monday morning.
They were called to the scene north of Bearhill Road just before 10 a.m.

Videos tell all: The Secret Lives of Public Servants exposes hidden talents
They walk unseen among us, meekly reviewing policy documents in their government cubicles by day, but breaking free after hours to write comic books, don costumes, and produce satirical artworks. Why a sugar tax would be sweet for Canadians
Lost in the noise generated by the legitimate backlash to Finance Minister Bill Morneau’s tax-reform proposals is a fiscal initiative that the federal government should have introduced a long time ago. A tax on sugary drinks would have been an easy political winner, with clear public health benefits and an opportunity to generate close to $1.7 billion in annual revenue; eclipsing the $250 million the Liberal government has claimed it will raise from its pending tax changes. Lake: Why we can't police our way out of the opioid crisis
Recently, I attended a meeting hosted by “We the Parents,” a Kanata organization trying to address the challenge of addictions and the very real tragedies that befall affected families. I saw grieving parents struggling to understand both the complexities of addiction and the way our health and criminal justice systems are responding to it. Understandably, many who attended were looking for straightforward, actionable solutions to this crisis.

Kurds use German weapons against Iraqis, Iraqis use U.S. weapons against Kurds
The pitfalls of arming various sides in the Middle East emerged in the last several days as Kurdish and Iraqi forces continue to fight each other.
On Friday, the Iraqis accused the Kurds of using Milan anti-tank missiles supplied by Germany against its troops.
Peshmerga forces say they destroyed 12 Abrams tanks and Humvees being used by Shia militia and Iraqi forces during an attack outside of Pirde.
But the Kurds suggest they didn’t do that using Milan anti-tank weapons. “We r -

Morneau’s capitulation an ugly scene
Re: Morneau agrees to blind trust, Oct. 20.
When I watched Finance Minister Bill Morneau attempt to explain his ethical dilemma, it reminded me of the one and only time I went fishing. My fishing companion provided me with a rod and then deftly put a worm on the hook.
It writhed and wiggled and looked like it was in great pain but we both knew it would not get off the hook. Rather than watching this gruesome display any longer, I threw the hook and line -

Police are asking the public to help them find a 60-year-old man missing since Friday.

History shows us why targeting Muslims over the niqab is absurd
A few years ago, the Parti Québécois sought to limit all religious symbols in government spaces with its infamous Charter of Quebec Values. Now Philippe Couillard’s Liberals have passed Bill 62, banning all face coverings for those giving or receiving government services in the province. As we witness yet again a Quebec government cynically exploit a nebulous idea of secularism to oppress a minority group – make no mistake, this latest law, just like the values charter, -
Khan: The niqab takes us back to where Muslim women should not be going
Let me be extremely clear. I am not in favour of Quebec’s religious neutrality law. As many have observed, Bill 62 contradicts the very idea of neutrality, breaches the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and the political machinations of the legislation are all too obvious.
The signs clearly point toward niqab as the legislation’s prime target. Past cases such as the Quebec religious symbols ban and the attempt to uncover women for the citizenship oath corroborate this.
For Muslim women -
Eliminating the Indian Act needs grassroots action
Ottawa citizens understand that the job of governing is hard. Getting agreement, growing an economy, serving citizens’ needs, and dealing with the inevitable crises that arise, require an endless well of dedication to the common good.
It’s a hard job when you have power, institutions and resources. Imagine trying to govern when these are absent, and worse, when your society’s values, capability and access to resources have been systematically stripped away for generation -

Gee-Gees men's team, Ravens women's squad win home tournaments
It being October, the Canadian university basketball season is still full of promise, so there’s no need for coaches to zipping through smartphones or Rolodexes for the names of psychotherapists.
And, if early results are any indication, coaches in Ottawa may escape sessions on the couch this season, with their teams flashing signs that they’ll be in the hunt for conference laurels next February.
Despite somewhat inconsistent performances from several veterans, the Ottawa Gee-Gees cl -
Denis Tassé: Gatineau council's 'money guy' aims at top job
In his 12 years as Gatineau city councillor, Denis Tassé has earned a reputation among his colleagues and the public as the “money guy” on council.
No city project was too arcane, no balance sheet was too complicated, to avoid his keen, and frequently critical, gaze.
The judicious, often relentless, use of the fine-tooth comb may have irritated some of Tassé’s colleagues, most frequently Mayor Maxime Pedneaud-Jobin, but it impressed others and led directly to his -
Warrenspiece: What a difference a year makes for Derick Brassard
It has taken a good 15 months to happen, but it’s safe to say that Derick Brassard is finally comfortable playing at home again.
For all the hype surrounding Auston Matthews — read on for more about the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 20-year-old superstar and his somewhat controversial post-game comments — Brassard was without question the best centre on the ice Saturday at Canadian Tire Centre.
There’s a decent debate about whether the Gatineau native or linemate Mark Stone -
Ottawa 67's winning streak ends in Hamilton
This time there was no extra time as the Ottawa 67’s three-game run of overtime heroics came to an end with a 3-0 loss to the Hamilton Bulldogs in an Ontario Hockey League game at Hamilton on Sunday.
Marian Studenic, Benjamin Gleason and Matthew Strome scored for the Bulldogs (6-2-3), who fired 44 shots at 67’s goaltender Olivier Lafrenière.

The 67’s had won six of their previous seven games, inc
