LRT: City seeking a consultant for largest art buy in Ottawa's history
City hall needs a consultant to manage the largest-ever art buy for Ottawa and it’s willing to pay nearly $200,000 for the outsourced services.
The city is poised to spend $11 million on original art for the Stage 2 rail expansion of the Confederation Line LRT and the Trillium Line.
There’s so much work coordinating the art program for Stage 2 that the city needs an outside advisor to help manage that part of the transit expansion project scheduled to be done in 2023.

Gen. Jon Vance – the Canadian military’s (almost) $300,000 man
Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Jon Vance could be seeing his salary increased.
Amanda Connolly of iPolitics is reporting that the pay package for Vance, the Chief of the Defence Staff, is increasing.
The salary range for the CDS position had been between $219,100 and $257,700. But on October 12, that salary range was boosted by the government. The CDS salary is now between $247,900 to $291,600. That raise is also backdated to July 17 of this year.

After fights in three straight games, Borowiecki sitting out with injury
Rugged Ottawa Senators defenceman Mark Borowiecki was playing coy Wednesday, refusing to go beyond the standard “bumps and bruises” when describing his latest injury setback.
Whatever it is — he seemed to be favouring his shoulder as he sat in the penalty box following Tuesday’s fight against Vancouver’s Derek Dorsett — it will keep him out for at least Thursday’s game against the New Jersey Devils.
“A little banged up, a little bit of wear an -
Will the Canadian Forces switch to multicam?
The Canadian Special Operations Forces Command is outfitting all its personnel, including support staff, with new uniforms for day-to-day use. The federal government recently issued a notice to industry that it was looking to buy over a five-year period more than 18,000 of those “multicam” uniforms. Those have a distinct camouflage pattern originally developed for the U.S. Army. Another request also went out for multicam flight suits for special forces tactical helicopter crews.

Cycling without Age: How a Danish bike fan brought pedal power to the elderly
Even Ole Kassow thought he was crazy when he showed up unannounced at a Copenhagen nursing home on a three-wheeled rickshaw bike and offered to take anyone who wanted for a bike ride.
Five years later, Cycling without Age is a worldwide phenomena, operating in 38 countries, including Canada, with the help of more than 10,000 volunteers. Total up the number of kilometres Kassow’s volunteer rickshaw “pilots” have pedalled their elderly passengers, and you have a journey three tim -

Sutcliffe: Gord Downie, Canada's secret mirror
Generations of Canadian writers, artists, performers have struggled with a fundamental question: Where do I situate my stories? Will I reach more people, have more impact, sell more copies if my experiential and geographical references are ambiguous or, more to the point, American? Do I take my Canadian narrative and transplant it to New York, California or some loosely defined Midwestern town?
Immune to such existential crises, Gord Downie and the Tragically Hip sang about Bobcaygeon, Millhaven -

Ontario government lawyers are making another run at dismissing a $500-million lawsuit over the cancellation of a massive wind-power station that might have been built in Lake Ontario off Kingston, a case that’s been in litigation for more than six years.
The government’s lawyers say the case is “plainly devoid of merit” and should be tossed, in their formal notice of their intentions filed in September.

Remembering Gord Downie through his lyrics
Gord Downie chose to bravely confront death head-on, raising awareness of his causes and his cancer.
He showed Courage, and Grace, Too. Instead of privately fading away, he brought us along on his journey to the other side, continuing to educate us and setting an example to live up to, including the fight for Indigenous communities.
I imagine, with a heavy heart, that he is meeting his maker in picturesque Bobcaygeon, surrounded by family and bandmates, a bittersweet ending to a life fully lived -

Ottawa man, 40, charged on child pornography offences
Ottawa police have arrested and charged a 40-year-old man with child pornography-related offences after a police investigation allegedly linked the man to questionable content online.

While looking into the P2P network, investigators identified a computer’s -
Denley: Community college instructors should put students first
Let’s hope Ontario’s community college teachers don’t expect much public sympathy for a strike that is disrupting the education of hundreds of thousands of students, including those at two colleges in Ottawa.
This strike is not primarily about pay. The college teachers have already received a reasonable offer of 7.75 per cent over four years. The real issue here is who runs the province’s community colleges, the workers or the management.

Egan: No second chance at a liver transplant — the undying gratitude of Dr. Aubrey Goldstein
As a doctor, a transplant expert, as an organ recipient, Aubrey Goldstein knew how dire things were in April.
Who, after all, but an arrestingly honest man would say:
“If we’re getting close to the end and I don’t get another transplant, I don’t regret anything. I lived a full life,” he told us with a profound candour.
“A couple of people die every day on the transplant list. I’ve been super fortunate. If this is it, I have to accept that.”

Online outpouring of tributes to Gord Downie is swift, heartfelt
No dress rehearsal, this is our life.
The outpouring of tributes from Canadians began the instant that news broke Wednesday morning that iconic Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie had died of brain cancer at 53.
The news wasn’t unexpected – Downie had announced in May 2016 that he had incurable glioblastoma – but social media users expressed their shock and hailed him for being a poetic voice of Canada and for using the limelight to promote reconciliation with indigenous people -
