Minus Erik Karlsson, the right side of the Senators’ defence held up just fine through the first five games of the season.
Chris Wideman had three goals, making him the highest scoring blueliner in the league and giving him a share of the team lamp-lighting lead heading into Tuesday’s game against the Vancouver Canucks. When Wideman struggled and wound up getting just 9:40 of ice time in the Oct. 10 visit to Vancouver, Fredrik Claesson picked up the slack with an exceptional 26:51 of

Federal government getting almost $40M to cover damage caused by Louis St. Laurent building fire
The federal government will receive a payout of almost $40 million to cover the damage and disruption caused by a fire at a Department of National Defence building in Gatineau.
Plans to repair the Louis St. Laurent building are still being worked out, but the government has submitted eight different claims to recover everything from removing debris to the installation of a temporary roof, according to documents obtained by the Citizen.
The fire broke out on April 21, 2016, forcing the shutdown o -
No foul play suspected after body pulled from Ottawa River behind 24 Sussex Drive
Police do not suspect foul play after a body was pulled from the Ottawa River near the back of the prime minister’s official residence Tuesday morning.
A police spokesperson confirmed a fisherman spotted the body floating in the water behind 24 Sussex Drive and called 911.
Police and ambulance were notified and a full water rescue response from Ottawa fire services located the person in the water. The scene was turned over to Ottawa police.
Const. Marc Soucy confirmed the call came in just -
Minor hockey coaches, trainers get mandatory training on being trans-inclusive
For two decades, minor hockey coaches have been taking mandatory “Speak Out” courses to heighten awareness of bullying and harassment issues in and around their game.
Now, in a further step to be inclusive, Ontario coaches, trainers and managers have been instructed to take training programs in support of transgender players.
The recent mandate applies to the three Ontario hockey associations: Hockey Eastern Ontario (HEO), which encompasses the national capital region, the Ontario Ho -

Reevely: Hiding billions in hydro debt 'unacceptable,' Ontario's auditor general says
Hiding billions of dollars the Ontario government is borrowing to lower electricity bills for a few years will cost hydro users an extra $4 billion, the province’s auditor general reported Tuesday morning.
Maybe worse, Bonnie Lysyk said in a special report on the Liberals’ “Fair Hydro Plan,” the tricks the government is using throw doubt on all the province’s books. The government, citizens, auditors and giant institutions that lend the province money are prett -

Captain Erik Karlsson confident as he makes his return
Erik Karlsson made his regular season debut Tuesday night at the Canadian Tire Centre.
Given the choice, the Ottawa Senators’ captain wouldn’t have waited this long.
The 27-year-old Karlsson, who is recovering from surgery he had in June to repair tendons in his left foot, was bound and determined to play opening night against the Washington Capitals, but he didn’t have clearance from the doctors and needed more time to get in game shape.
The wait felt long to Karlsson, it was -
House Works: Keeping the air fresh in a tiny home
Q: Where can I install a heat recovery ventilator in my 832 square-foot home? I don’t have a basement, just a crawlspace.
A: As much as I love heat recovery ventilators (HRVs) because of the fresh air and condensation-free windows they provide during cold weather, given that your house is so small, I wouldn’t install one.
The cost of losing precious living space to the HRV itself and to the air ducts is just too high given the benefits that an HRV offers in a small space like yours. -

Gurski: Questions that remain unanswered about Joshua Boyle
First and foremost, Canadians and others should be very happy for Joshua Boyle, Caitlan Coleman and their children now that their five-year ordeal is over.
The conditions under which the family was held hostage by the Taliban/Haqqani group were truly horrendous and no one should underestimate or dismiss that. I, for one, feel most for the kids and we have already read where the oldest is having a hard time adjusting to freedom.
Yes, children are resilient and their very young age in this case wi -

Watchdog rebukes OPP officer, but no charges in fatal Smiths Falls crash
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit won’t charge an Ontario Provincial Police officer in connection with a 2016 crash near Smiths Falls that killed an 18-year-old man.
However, the watchdog agency, in a report released Tuesday, did criticize the officer for claiming he wasn’t chasing the suspect, even though evidence showed the officer was following the suspect’s car down Kitley Line 2 at more than 160 km/h.
The incident began at 8:14 p.m. on May 19, 2016 when the offic -
Karlsson returns, but Senators vow not to change winning ways
Ottawa Senators captain Erik Karlsson will make his season debut Tuesday night against the Vancouver Canucks, but coach Guy Boucher says the team can’t lose the focus from the way they played without him.
“We’re not going to change anything,” Boucher said. “He just brings his attributes and he has been outstanding last year at buying into everything we were doing and being a dedicated defenceman on both sides of the ice.”
The game time decision for the Senator -

Today's letter: Women have not been silent about their treatment
Time for men to stand up alongside all women
Re: Letter: Religion, culture, inform treatment of women, Oct. 16
If, as a recent letter writer suggests, the silence of women is harming our cause, let me be loud and clear: Women have been pushing back against patriarchal power structures for a very long time.
It is those who hold the reins of power – in this case, men – who control the direction of society, including it’s treatment of women.
If many women are quiet, it is because -
Questions raised about Canadian military family care assistance rules
Recently some Defence Watch readers have been raising what they see are concerns about the child care benefits that military members receive. Here is an example of what one reader in the Canadian Forces wrote:
“I see the gov’t found a way to recoup some of the money they are losing, from the tax free status they first rescinded and then under public pressure, reinstated to deployed military members.
Recently the Treasury Board announced that deploying members who require ch -

Cohen: Why North Korea reminds us of the Cuban Missile Crisis
If there is a classic case study of nuclear confrontation, it is the Cuban Missile Crisis. In October 1962, the world came closer to Armageddon than at any time in history.
For 13 days, the United States, led by John F. Kennedy, challenged the Soviet Union over its secret deployment of nuclear missiles in Cuba. The Soviets, led by Nikita Khrushchev, denied and demurred. At any moment of this frightful fortnight, a misstep could have triggered a nuclear war.
