EDMONTON — The Ottawa Senators will have Erik Karlsson waiting for them when they arrive home from Western Canada on Sunday.
If all has gone well during the past seven days, head coach Guy Boucher said Saturday afternoon, the club’s captain could suit up for his first game since off-season foot surgery as early Tuesday against the Vancouver Canucks in the opener of a five-game homestand at Canadian Tire Centre.
If Karlsson doesn’t play then, Boucher said before the Senators fac

Zombies walk the streets of Almonte
Arms outstretched, they staggered through the streets of Almonte on Saturday afternoon as foreboding clouds pressed down on them from above, the living, breathing, costumed undead shuffling along for a good cause.
It was a gory scene on the streets of the picturesque town some 50 kilometres west of Ottawa, but the day was brightened by the fact the rains didn’t come to wash all that fake blood away, and the third annual Almonte Zombie Walk For Hunger was able to go ahead as scheduled.

Iraqis and Kurds in armed standoff – some clashes already reported
Iraq’s government has ordered the Kurds to surrender key military positions in the disputed city of Kirkuk.
The Kurds have been given until late Saturday night to comply.
Brief clashes also erupted between Kurdish forces and Shia militia backing the Iraqi government, the BBC has reported.

Community holds benefit to support farm family devastated by fire
Supporters from across the region are expected to attend a benefit in North Gower Saturday night in aid of a Barrhaven family who lost tits barns and most of its dairy herd in a fire last month.
The Ruiter family’s three barns were destroyed in the fire at Black Rapids Farm on Sept. 8. Eighty Holstein cows and calves perished in the blaze, which wiped out most of the herd. However, farmer Peter Ruiter still had 10 cows in a pasture across Prince of Wales Drive and another six in a neighbou -
Museum of Nature warehouse opens up to showcase rare treasures
The Museum of Nature opened the doors to its private warehouse in Gatineau on Saturday, offering a rare opportunity to catch a glimpse of some of the most unusual objects in the museum’s collection — and meet the people who work with them.
The event, held every year in a warehouse the size of five hockey ricks, aims at pulling back the curtain on the rarest of the more than 14.6 million artifacts in the museum’s collection, including many that don’t make it on displa -
Heading down CFL stretch, Redblacks are believers
REGINA – Through thick and thin, through injuries, adversity and a chilly October Friday night in Saskatchewan, the Ottawa Redblacks insist their belief has never wavered.
Now that they have clinched a playoff spot in the Canadian Football League’s East Division, the Redblacks are not only battle tested, they’re confident they have what it takes to repeat as Grey Cup champions.

Ontario Liberals put abortion clinic bubble zone bill on 'accelerated timeline'
The Ontario Liberals appear poised to move ahead with fast-tracking a law to create “bubble zones” around abortion clinics, despite a statement earlier this month that they wanted to take the time to “strengthen the bill.”
The House Leaders have made a tentative agreement on the schedule for Bill 163, said a spokesperson for Attorney General Yasir Naqvi.
“The motion for unanimous consent (UC) will be moved on Monday October 16th with a scheduling agreement to move t -
Milnes: A library, Frank Lloyd Wright and a Canada 150 time capsule
Arthur Milnes and his wife, Alison, embarked upon a special project to mark Canada’s sesquicentennial year: A time capsule. But rather than filling it with things from around their home in Kingston, the pair have reached out far and wide to people, places and institutions with any connection to this country. The responses, whether from small towns or celebrities, have shed light on Canada’s true identity and place in the world. This is the latest in an ongoing series of columns on hi -
Meet a senior public servant looking to make a career switch by becoming Gatineau mayor
It didn’t take any arm-twisting when a visitor remarked on a lovely standup parlour piano in the living room of Gatineau mayoral hopeful Clément Bélanger recently.
“Yeah, I play some,” he said, lifting the keyboard cover and comping a few bars of Elvis Presley’s signature tune Can’t Help Falling In Love.
It was a flourishy, polished rendition. You could imagine ice cubes tinkling in glasses in the casino lounge.

Successful graphic novelist on growing up with a mentally ill mother
Von Allan remembers the time he was 12 or 13 and his teacher at Glashan Public School began to lecture him about his poor attendance record.

“That was one of the realizations that I had as a kid that this whole school-reality-marks thing is bulls—. My mom’s in trouble. That’s what I n -
The IT Factor: What Ottawa must do to brand itself as a true national tech hub
For most of the past 15 years — ever since Nortel began hemorrhaging jobs — the morning rush hour traffic in Kanata has largely been outbound, heading into downtown Ottawa or other parts of the region. Office buildings had floors of unused space.
That’s changed in the past few years. Both office space and talent are scarce in the Kanata tech park and, if there’s still traffic heading east, there’s an equal amount of it heading into Kanata, says Jenna Sudds, the outg -

More transparency needed in long-term care
When Viola Lucas, 79, was found dead at the Extendicare Laurier Manor long-term care home, her head was wedged between the mattress and the railing of her bed. Brennan: Ottawa fans left to ponder questions with teams out west
It’s bad enough that Ottawa sports fans have been left with an empty feeling as both their pro sports teams have spent the past week in Western Canada, but, for two weekends in a row, the coinciding schedules have made it impossible to watch one without ignoring the other.
Good thing for PVRs, but are you ever able to watch what you’ve taped with no hint of the outcome?
So many more questions will become clearer when the Senators and Redblacks return to the nation’s capital nex -

Louis Sadava was a part of the popular Vancouver Island band when they began more than a decade ago, but left when he started a family. He was replaced by the mysteriously named Ghosty Boy, who’
